Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The market was built upward from piperylene volumes recovered across naphtha steam cracker C5 streams and dedicated purification units, multiplied by realised regional prices reported for high-purity and technical-grade material. Resin, adhesive and rubber-compounding demand volumes were estimated from downstream tackifier and additive production rates that consume piperylene as a feedstock, then priced at grade-specific unit values. This bottom-up build was checked against the disclosed chemicals-segment revenue of integrated producers such as LyondellBasell and Dow, where piperylene sits within a broader C5 hydrocarbons line. Where the two diverged, the bottom-up volume or price assumption was corrected, typically the assumed byproduct recovery rate from a specific cracker configuration, instead of averaging the two figures together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target procurement and formulation managers at resin, adhesive and rubber-compounding buyers who set piperylene purity and volume specifications, alongside commercial and supply-chain leads at integrated petrochemical producers who manage byproduct allocation between piperylene and competing C5 outlets. Regulatory and product-safety contacts at these buyers were also sampled, since piperylene handling and purity thresholds are shaped by workplace and transport safety rules that affect which grade a buyer will accept. Sampling weights toward North America, Europe and Northeast Asia, where naphtha cracking capacity and resin manufacturing are concentrated, with lighter coverage of Latin America and the Middle East, where piperylene is used mainly by regional formulators.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on customs trade data filed under the relevant piperylene and C5 hydrocarbon HS codes, national chemical production statistics published by petrochemical trade associations in the United States, Europe and China, and safety data sheets and transport classifications filed with regulatory registers that disclose grade and purity specifications. Producer sustainability and investor disclosures covering cracker utilization and C5 stream output were reviewed for the major integrated suppliers named in this report, alongside published price assessments for piperylene concentrate and high-purity grades carried by chemical market data services. Patent filings covering piperylene-based resin formulations corroborate application-level demand signals.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from expected growth in hydrocarbon tackifier resin consumption, rising resin loading rates in tire and rubber compounding, and gradual purification capacity additions that shift supply toward higher-purity grades. Regulatory tightening on adhesive and coating formulations in Europe and North America is treated as a driver of higher-purity demand, not a constraint, since compliant formulations increasingly specify tighter piperylene purity bands. Cracker feedstock switching toward lighter inputs, which can reduce piperylene co-production in some regions, is normalised for by weighting Asia Pacific capacity additions more heavily than mature-region cracker output. For the forecast to hold, tackifier resin demand growth needs to continue at a pace consistent with recent packaging and adhesive volume trends.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Historical output was back-tested against recorded production growth for hydrocarbon tackifier resins and tire-grade rubber additives over 2020-2024, confirming the sizing model tracks known demand cycles in those downstream categories. Segment-share shifts, particularly the gradual move toward higher-purity grades and the rising share of Automotive and Tires end use, were reviewed against analyst commentary from resin and rubber-compounding trade publications. Sensitivities were tested on cracker feedstock mix assumptions and on the pace of purification capacity additions in Asia Pacific, since both materially change the balance between byproduct and dedicated piperylene supply. Regional splits were cross-checked against reported naphtha cracking capacity by country.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmer for the Purity Grade and Application axes, where downstream resin and rubber-additive production data give a reasonably direct read on piperylene consumption. It is weaker for country-level splits outside the largest producing economies, where piperylene is rarely reported as a standalone line and volumes are inferred from broader C5 hydrocarbon or cracker capacity data. A structural risk to the estimate is any shift in cracker feedstock mix that changes byproduct piperylene yield faster than purification capacity can adjust, which would move supply and pricing outside the ranges assumed here.
