Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from unit volumes and realised prices. Organic pad and pantyliner shipment volumes are estimated by region from retailer sell-through data, D2C order volumes reported by direct-to-consumer brands, and organic cotton and bamboo fiber input consumption reported by textile and nonwoven material suppliers, then multiplied by average realised retail and online selling prices by pack size and material grade. That bottom-up figure is checked against disclosed feminine care segment revenue from Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unicharm and Ontex, and against funding and revenue disclosures from Rael, The Honest Company and other direct-to-consumer organic brands. Where the two diverge, the unit-volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build is corrected, not averaged against the disclosed figure.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target category and merchandising managers at pharmacy and supermarket chains that stock organic feminine care, procurement leads at direct-to-consumer brands sourcing certified organic cotton and bamboo fiber, regulatory affairs contacts handling organic and biodegradable labeling claims, and buyers at online marketplaces and subscription retailers who set assortment and pricing. Sampling weights North America and Europe, where certified organic labeling and retailer category management are most established, alongside a growing share of interviews in India and China, where domestic organic and direct-to-consumer brands are expanding fastest. Contacts at raw-material suppliers of organic cotton and bamboo fiber are included to corroborate input cost and availability assumptions used in the bottom-up build.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on organic and biodegradable certification registers such as GOTS and OEKO-TEX, which list certified manufacturers and material suppliers relevant to this market, along with national customs codes covering sanitary napkin and nonwoven fiber trade flows. Retail scanner and e-commerce category data from pharmacy and supermarket chains supplement shipment estimates, and public filings from Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unicharm and Ontex provide segment-level revenue benchmarks. Trade association publications from nonwoven and hygiene product bodies in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific are used to cross-check raw material consumption trends specific to organic cotton and bamboo fiber.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from expected shifts in organic penetration within the broader sanitary napkin category, the pace at which pharmacy and supermarket chains expand organic shelf space, and the rate at which direct-to-consumer and subscription models lower the cost of reaching new buyers. Pricing is assumed to narrow gradually against conventional products as organic cotton and bamboo fiber sourcing scales beyond today's premium levels. The acceleration seen in 2021 through 2023, tied to a temporary surge in sustainability-driven purchasing, is normalised in the base year and not carried forward at the same pace. For the forecast to hold, certified organic material supply must keep pace with retailer and online demand without a sustained price spike.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded category growth in the historical period, checking that implied volume and price assumptions for 2020 through 2024 match reported retail and online sell-through where available. Segment-level shifts, particularly the move toward online and direct-to-consumer channels and toward bamboo and other biodegradable materials, are reviewed against category managers' own stocking and assortment decisions. Sensitivities were tested on the pace of retail shelf expansion, the rate of price convergence with conventional products, and the availability of certified organic raw material, since these three assumptions carry the most influence over the shape of the forecast. Results that moved materially under a single sensitivity were flagged and reworked, not accepted as originally modeled.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest for organic menstrual pads sold through established pharmacy and supermarket channels in North America and Europe, where retailer category data and large manufacturers' disclosures give a clear read on volume and price. It is thinner for online and direct-to-consumer sales in Asia Pacific and Latin America, where smaller organic brands report inconsistently and category boundaries between organic and conventional overlap in retailer data. A structural risk to the estimate is a sustained increase in certified organic cotton or bamboo fiber cost, which would compress the price convergence assumed in the forecast and could shift growth back toward the conventional category.
