Market Analysis & Outlook
KNX products are the sensors, actuators and system components (bus couplers, power supplies, gateways and interfaces) that implement the open KNX standard for building automation, controlling lighting, heating and cooling, shading, security and energy management from a shared bus network. Buyers are electrical contractors and system integrators who specify and commission these devices on commercial and residential construction projects, alongside building owners and facilities managers who purchase retrofit upgrades on existing properties.
The global knx products market stood at USD 20.5 billion in 2025. A forecast-period rate of 9.91% takes it to USD 49.4 billion by 2034, and the study reports every year in between, passing USD 11.5 billion in 2020, USD 18.5 billion in 2024, USD 23.2 billion in 2026 and USD 35.1 billion in 2030.
42% of 2025 revenue sits in Actuators, worth USD 8.61 billion and rising to USD 19.27 billion at 39% by 2034, the largest product type line in both years. Growth is fastest in Sensors at 11.27% and slowest in Actuators at 9.01%. Share moves toward Sensors and away from Actuators and System Components, though no line shrinks in revenue terms.
By application, Commercial Building accounts for 52% of 2025 revenue at USD 10.66 billion, reaching USD 27.17 billion and 55% by 2034. It is also the fastest-growing line on this axis at 10.96%, so the split concentrates over the period instead of balancing. This axis divides the same revenue as the product type split instead of adding to it, so the two are read together and never summed.
USD 8.61 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in Europe, 42% of the global total and the largest regional share; it reaches USD 17.78 billion by 2034. Asia Pacific is next at 30% and USD 6.15 billion, and Latin America last at 4%. Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa gain share across the period, so growth is not distributed evenly between regions.
Behind these figures sit five regions, three product type lines and five segmentation axes, each reported for every year from 2020 to 2034. The headline 2025 value is arrived at by triangulating published aggregates against category proxies, not by an independent count, and the same applies to the segment, regional and country breakdowns drawn from it.

Key Takeaways
- A forecast-period rate of 9.91% takes the market from USD 20.5 billion in 2025 to USD 49.4 billion in 2034, against 12.25% recorded over the 2020-2025 historical period.
- 42% of 2025 revenue sits in Actuators (USD 8.61 billion) and it remains the largest product type line in 2034 at USD 19.27 billion and 39%.
- Fastest growth on the product type axis belongs to Sensors: 11.27% a year, USD 6.97 billion to USD 18.77 billion, and a share moving from 34% to 38%.
- Against a base case of USD 49.4 billion in 2034, the study also reports a bear case at USD 42.48 billion and a bull case at USD 56.32 billion, with the assumptions behind each set out separately.
- Europe holds 42% of global revenue in 2025 at USD 8.61 billion, the largest of the five regions tracked, and reaches USD 17.78 billion by 2034.
- 34.03% of Europe's base-year revenue comes from Germany alone: USD 2.93 billion in 2025, rising to USD 5.87 billion by 2034, which is why it is that region's worked example.
- Fifteen years are reported, 2020 to 2034 with 2025 as the base: revenue, share and growth rate per line, per axis and per region, not as a single blended series.
Market Trends
Revenue Share, By By Product Type
Base year 2025Actuators leads with 42.0% of by product type segment revenue.
Share of by product type segment revenue, most recent base year.
Three movements define the forecast period in the global knx products market: how the product type mix changes, where regional weight shifts, and the rate at which the total compounds.
None of them reverses the market's direction. Every line and every region grows in absolute terms across the period; the movement is in which of them captures the revenue added.
Sensors outpaces Actuators. Between 2026 and 2034, 11.27% growth in Sensors against 9.01% in Actuators pulls the product type mix apart. Over the forecast period that moves Sensors from 34% of revenue to 38%, and Actuators from 42% to 39%. Neither contracts: USD 6.97 billion becomes USD 18.77 billion, USD 8.61 billion becomes USD 19.27 billion. What the spread decides is which of them a supplier's revenue is exposed to.
Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa gain regional share. Asia Pacific moves from 30% of revenue in 2025 to 36% in 2034, worth USD 6.15 billion rising to USD 17.78 billion; Middle East and Africa moves from 8% of revenue in 2025 to 9% in 2034, worth USD 1.64 billion rising to USD 4.45 billion. Against that, North America at 16% moving to 15%, Europe at 42% moving to 36%, Latin America at 4% moving to 4%, a fall in share, not in revenue. Growth is therefore not something a participant inherits from the market; it depends on which regions its revenue is weighted toward.
The series never breaks trajectory. The market moves through USD 11.5 billion in 2020, USD 18.5 billion in 2024, USD 20.5 billion in 2025, USD 23.2 billion in 2026, USD 35.1 billion in 2030 and USD 49.4 billion in 2034. The forecast rate of 9.91% sits against 12.25% over the historical period, so the projection extends an observed trend instead of proposing a new one. A plan built on this market is therefore a plan about capturing a share of steady expansion, which is decided on the product type and regional axes, not by the headline rate.
Market Growth Factors
The fastest line decides the blended rate
Market Drivers
3- 01The fastest line decides the blended rate
Sensors compounds at 11.27% against 9.91% for the market, rising from USD 6.97 billion in 2025 to USD 18.77 billion in 2034 and from 34% of revenue to 38%. Nothing else on the axis grows as fast (Actuators manages 9.01%) so the blended 9.91% is carried by this one line instead of shared across them. Exposure to this line, not to the market as a whole, is what determines a supplier's own rate.
- 02The two largest regions hold most of the base
The largest regional base is Europe: USD 8.61 billion in 2025 at 42% of the global total, USD 17.78 billion by 2034, still 36%. Asia Pacific adds a further 30% at USD 6.15 billion, reaching USD 17.78 billion. Together the two account for the majority of both the 2025 base and the revenue added by 2034, which is why a regional plan treating all five regions at equal weight misreads where the growth actually lands.
- 03A demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround
USD 11.5 billion in 2020, USD 18.5 billion in 2024 and USD 20.5 billion in 2025: 12.25% compound growth before the forecast period even begins. The forecast period then runs at 9.91%, ending 2034 at USD 49.4 billion. Fifteen years of unbroken growth in the series means the forecast rests on a demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround, and it is why the 9.91% rate is applied flat across the whole period instead of ramped through it.

Restraints
| # | Restraint | Impact | Estimated reduction (Billion) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Installation and integration cost relative to conventional wiring | Medium-High | −1.3 | High | Medium | Medium |

| 3 | Competition from alternative building-automation protocols | Low | −0.5 | Low | Medium | Medium |
| Total | −2.6 | |||||
Drivers contribute 31.5 Billion and restraints remove 2.6 Billion, a net 28.9 Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Three sources account for the growth to 2034: 9.91% compounding across the base, share moving toward the faster product type lines, and above-market expansion in the leading regions.
Restraining Factors
Downside case: USD 42.48 billion by 2034, against USD 49.4 billion in the base case
Market Restraints
2- 01Downside case: USD 42.48 billion by 2034, against USD 49.4 billion in the base case
Bear case assumes delayed enforcement of building-automation code requirements in the European Union and slower displacement of conventional wiring by certified installers in price-sensitive markets. On that assumption 2034 revenue lands at USD 42.48 billion against the USD 49.4 billion base case, from the same USD 20.5 billion 2025 starting point.
- 02Actuators grows below the market rate
Actuators carries 42% of 2025 revenue at USD 8.61 billion but compounds at 9.01% against 9.91% for the market, taking its share to 39% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 19.27 billion. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
Upside case: USD 56.32 billion by 2034
Market Opportunities
2- 01Upside case: USD 56.32 billion by 2034
Bull case assumes faster-than-planned enforcement of EU non-residential building-automation mandates and quicker adoption of IP and wireless KNX devices in Asia Pacific retrofit projects. On that assumption the market reaches USD 56.32 billion by 2034 against USD 49.4 billion in the base case, from the same USD 20.5 billion in 2025.
- 02The opening is on the product type axis, not the regional one
Share on the product type axis moves toward Sensors, from 34% in 2025 to 38% in 2034, on 11.27% growth against the market's 9.91% and revenue rising from USD 6.97 billion to USD 18.77 billion. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds Actuators, which is the harder and more expensive fight.
Market Challenges
One product type line carries the market
Market Challenges
2- 01One product type line carries the market
Actuators is 42% of 2025 revenue at USD 8.61 billion and still 39% at USD 19.27 billion in 2034. A market leaning this heavily on one product type line concentrates its exposure there, and a shift in demand for that line moves the total more than any other single change on the axis.
- 02Single-country exposure in Europe
34.03% of the leading region is one country: Germany, at USD 2.93 billion against Europe's USD 8.61 billion in 2025, and USD 5.87 billion by 2034. Read as a region it looks diversified; read by weight it is not, and the regional forecast inherits whatever happens in that one market.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesfive segmentation axes are reported; by product type, by application, communication medium, installation type and distribution channel. Revenue does not add across them: each is a different cut of the same total.
All three product type lines expand in revenue terms over the forecast period. Share is the dividing line; one takes it, the others cede it.

Scale in Actuators and Growth in Sensors Define the Product type Axis
- Largest Actuators · 42%
- Fastest Sensors · 11.3%
- Moves most Sensors · +4 pts
- Order by 2034 unchanged
| Segment | 2025 | Share | 2034 | Share | CAGR |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Actuators | $8.61B | 42% | $19.27B | 39%-3 | 9% |
| Sensors | $6.97B | 34% | $18.77B | 38%+4 | 11.3% |
| System Components | $4.92B | 24% | $11.36B | 23%-1 | 9.4% |
Actuators lead because building automation projects prioritize direct control of lighting, HVAC and shading loads, and switching or dimming actuators are the components installed in the greatest quantity per project. Sensors grow fastest as presence, daylight and air-quality detection are added to more rooms per installation, feeding automation logic. System components move with overall bus-network expansion rather than either extreme. The order does not change: Actuators is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds. Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.
By Application · 3 segments
Commercial Building Holds the Largest Application Share and Is Still the Quickest to Grow
- Largest Commercial Building · 52%
- Fastest Commercial Building · 11%

| Others | $1.64B | 8% | $3.95B | 8% | 10.3% |
Commercial Building leads because office, retail and hospitality developers are the earliest adopters of centralized automation, driven by energy-code compliance and facility-management requirements. Commercial construction is also the fastest-growing segment, since retrofit mandates targeting non-residential buildings under energy-performance directives create ongoing replacement and upgrade demand that outpaces new residential construction. Commercial Building remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.
By Communication Medium · 4 segments
Twisted Pair (TP) Held the Dominant Share of the Communication medium Segment in 2025
- Largest Twisted Pair (TP) · 58%

| Powerline (PL) | $1.23B | 6% | $2.47B | 5%-1 | 8.1% |
Twisted Pair leads because it is the original, most widely certified KNX medium and remains the default specification in most installer training and product certification. IP/Ethernet and RF/Wireless grow fastest as projects increasingly need to bridge automation networks with building IT infrastructure and as retrofit installations favor wireless devices that avoid new cabling runs. Twisted Pair (TP) remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.
By Installation Type · 2 segments
New Construction Held the Dominant Share of the Installation type Segment in 2025
- Largest New Construction · 54%
- Fastest Retrofit · 11.5%
- Moves most New Construction · -5 pts
- Order by 2034 changes
| Segment | 2025 | Share | 2034 | Share | CAGR |

| New Construction | $11.07B | 54% | $24.21B | 49%-5 | 9.1% |
| Retrofit | $9.43B | 46% | $25.19B | 51%+5 | 11.5% |
New Construction leads because automation is specified at the design stage on new commercial and multi-family developments where wiring is unconstrained. Retrofit grows fastest as energy-performance mandates increasingly apply to existing building stock, and owners replace conventional switches and thermostats with bus-based control during scheduled renovation cycles rather than waiting for redevelopment. By 2034 the largest line is Retrofit and no longer New Construction, the one axis here where the order actually changes.

| Direct Sales | $3.07B | 15% | $7.41B | 15% | 10.3% |
System Integrators and Installers lead because KNX projects require licensed configuration through the ETS engineering tool, a step end customers rarely perform themselves. Integrators also grow fastest, as expanding retrofit and multi-building portfolio work favors firms that can bundle design, commissioning and maintenance rather than a single product purchase through a wholesaler. By 2034 System Integrators/Installers is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 82%
- Of global 13.1%
- Revenue $2.69B → $6.08B
82.01% of North America's base-year revenue comes from the United States; USD 2.69 billion, rising to USD 6.08 billion by 2034. At 82.01% of regional revenue in the base year it is not one market among several, the region's trajectory is largely this country's trajectory. The region itself runs USD 3.28 billion to USD 7.41 billion over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Demand in the United States follows the product type mix reported at global level: Actuators is the largest line at 42% of 2025 revenue, moving to 39% by 2034, while Sensors grows fastest at 11.27% and takes its share from 34% to 38%. Its 82.01% weight in North America means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Per-product type revenue for the United States appears on its own in the full report.
KNX products sold in the United States fall under general electrical and electronic product oversight rather than a dedicated building-automation regulator. The Federal Communications Commission governs electromagnetic compatibility and any radio-frequency functions built into a controller or gateway, while safety certification runs through a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as UL, whose listing suppliers commonly seek before a product reaches a distributor or installer. Where a KNX device ties into a building's fixed wiring, installation must also follow the National Electrical Code as adopted by the relevant state or municipal authority. Suppliers are expected to document conformity, carry the appropriate safety mark, and ensure labelling identifies the manufacturer and rated electrical parameters clearly enough for an installer or inspector to verify compliance.
In the United States the field is Schneider, ABB, SIEMENS, Hager (Berker), Legrand, Somfy, JUNG, GIRA, HDL, STEINEL, Urmet, GVS, B.E.G., Bonzi, JOBO Smartech, Tiansu, Theben AG and Rishun Technology.. Volume sits in Actuators at 42% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Sensors at 11.27% growth. Per-company positioning and share at country level are in the full report only.

Germany
The largest market in Europe, growing 2.0×.
- In region 1 of 3
- Of region 34%
- Of global 14.3%
- Revenue $2.93B → $5.87B
34.03% of Europe's base-year revenue comes from Germany; USD 2.93 billion, rising to USD 5.87 billion by 2034. It accounts for 34.03% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Regional revenue of USD 8.61 billion in 2025 and USD 17.78 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Actuators at 42% of 2025 revenue, easing to 39% by 2034, and the fastest is Sensors at 11.27%, from 34% to 38%. Since 34.03% of Europe's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. The full report reports Germany by product type separately.
As an EU member state, Germany applies the Low Voltage Directive and the EMC Directive to KNX devices, with the Radio Equipment Directive also engaged where a product includes wireless functionality. Conformity is demonstrated through the harmonized EN standards written for home and building electronic systems, and a compliant supplier affixes the CE mark once technical documentation and a declaration of conformity are in place. Market surveillance authorities retain the power to request this documentation or withdraw a non-conforming product from sale. Labelling must identify the manufacturer, the model, and the electrical ratings needed for safe installation. Because KNX is an open, standardized protocol rather than a proprietary one, interoperability claims are also expected to reflect genuine adherence to the published standard rather than a vendor's own interpretation of it.
Schneider, ABB, SIEMENS, Hager (Berker), Legrand, Somfy, JUNG, GIRA, HDL, STEINEL, Urmet, GVS, B.E.G., Bonzi, JOBO Smartech, Tiansu, Theben AG and Rishun Technology. are the suppliers covered in Germany. The commercially relevant division is 42% of 2025 revenue in Actuators, where the volume is, against 11.27% growth in Sensors, where share moves. A supplier must have the relevant product tested against applicable national GB standards covering electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility before the CCC mark can be applied, and that mark must appear on the product or its packaging before sale. Devices with wireless communication functions face separate radio-type approval addressing frequency use and emissions. Import channels typically require the certification to be completed, or a recognized equivalent accepted, ahead of customs clearance. Suppliers are expected to maintain test reports and factory inspection records that can be produced on request by regulators or purchasers seeking to confirm conformity.
Competition in China runs between the suppliers this study tracks: Schneider, ABB, SIEMENS, Hager (Berker), Legrand, Somfy, JUNG, GIRA, HDL, STEINEL, Urmet, GVS, B.E.G., Bonzi, JOBO Smartech, Tiansu, Theben AG and Rishun Technology.. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Actuators at 42% of 2025 revenue, and taking Sensors while it grows at 11.27%. Weighting toward Asia Pacific means competing for 30% of 2025 global revenue, a base of USD 6.15 billion moving to USD 17.78 billion across the forecast period.

By 2034 the share has moved up to 9%, because it outgrows the market's 9.91%; the revenue added here is disproportionate to where the region started.
Within the region the product type split tracks the global one; 42% of 2025 revenue in Actuators, fastest growth of 11.27% in Sensors. Revenue for Middle East and Africa is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
United Arab Emirates
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 2.7×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 40.2%
- Of global 3.2%
- Revenue $0.66B → $1.78B
The United Arab Emirates is the largest market within Middle East and Africa, generating USD 0.66 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 1.78 billion by 2034. At 40.24% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Middle East and Africa's revenue is generated in other markets. Regional revenue of USD 1.64 billion in 2025 and USD 4.45 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
Demand in the United Arab Emirates follows the product type mix reported at global level: Actuators is the largest line at 42% of 2025 revenue, moving to 39% by 2034, while Sensors grows fastest at 11.27% and takes its share from 34% to 38%. Since 40.24% of Middle East and Africa's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. The United Arab Emirates carries its own product type breakdown in the full report.
Products in this category fall under the conformity framework administered by the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology, which requires registration and, for many low-voltage electrical and electronic goods, a conformity mark before sale within the country. A supplier is expected to hold test reports from an accredited laboratory addressing electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility, and to ensure labelling in Arabic and English identifies the manufacturer and rated specifications. Where a KNX installation forms part of a building's fire or life-safety systems, local civil defence authorities in the relevant emirate impose their own approval requirements before commissioning. Distributors operating across the wider Gulf market also look to standards issued by the regional standardization body, which many national schemes in the area draw upon.
Schneider, ABB, SIEMENS, Hager (Berker), Legrand, Somfy, JUNG, GIRA, HDL, STEINEL, Urmet, GVS, B.E.G., Bonzi, JOBO Smartech, Tiansu, Theben AG and Rishun Technology. are the suppliers covered in the United Arab Emirates. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Actuators at 42% of 2025 revenue, and taking Sensors while it grows at 11.27%. That makes Middle East and Africa a 8% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 1.64 billion rising to USD 4.45 billion, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.
Saudi Arabia
2nd-largest in Middle East and Africa, growing 2.8×.

Latin America Market Analysis
The 5th-largest region covered, holding its share flat through 2034, while revenue still grows 2.4×.
- Rank 5 of 5
- 2025 share 4%
- By 2034 4%
- Revenue $0.82B → $1.98B
USD 0.82 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in Latin America, 4% of the global knx products market and reaches USD 1.98 billion by 2034. By revenue it sits fifth across the study, and the ranking does not change between 2025 and 2034.
Its share moves to 4% by 2034, and the region keeps growing in absolute terms while others expand faster, a change in relative weight, not a decline in demand.
Actuators leads here as it does globally, at 42% of 2025 revenue, and Sensors again grows fastest at 11.27%. Revenue for Latin America is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
Brazil
The largest market in Latin America, growing 2.4×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 47.6%
- Of global 1.9%
- Revenue $0.39B → $0.95B
The largest single market in Latin America is Brazil, at USD 0.39 billion in 2025 and USD 0.95 billion in 2034. At 47.56% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Latin America's revenue is generated in other markets. Against regional totals of USD 0.82 billion in 2025 and USD 1.98 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Actuators at 42% of 2025 revenue, easing to 39% by 2034, and the fastest is Sensors at 11.27%, from 34% to 38%. Its 47.56% weight in Latin America means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Brazil carries its own product type breakdown in the full report.
Electronic products sold in Brazil generally require certification through INMETRO, which oversees compliance with Brazilian technical standards for electrical safety and, where relevant, electromagnetic compatibility. A supplier must have the product tested by an accredited body and carry the INMETRO conformity mark before distribution, alongside labelling in Portuguese that states the manufacturer, model, and electrical ratings. Any wireless communication component brings the product under ANATEL's separate homologation process, which addresses radio-frequency emissions and interference limits rather than electrical safety. Because import and customs clearance typically depend on these certifications being complete, suppliers are expected to secure both approvals, and to maintain the underlying test documentation, well ahead of bringing a product to market in the country.
Competition in Brazil runs between the suppliers this study tracks: Schneider, ABB, SIEMENS, Hager (Berker), Legrand, Somfy, JUNG, GIRA, HDL, STEINEL, Urmet, GVS, B.E.G., Bonzi, JOBO Smartech, Tiansu, Theben AG and Rishun Technology.. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Actuators at 42% of 2025 revenue, and taking Sensors while it grows at 11.27%. That makes Latin America a 4% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 0.82 billion rising to USD 1.98 billion, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.
Mexico
2nd-largest in Latin America, growing 2.4×.
- In region 2 of 2

Competitive Landscape
Position on the Product type Axis Decides Competitive Standing
Suppliers in scope: Schneider, ABB, SIEMENS, Hager (Berker), Legrand, Somfy, JUNG, GIRA, HDL, STEINEL, Urmet, GVS, B.E.G., Bonzi, JOBO Smartech, Tiansu, Theben AG and Rishun Technology..
The product type axis, not the regional one, is where competition happens. Actuators is 42% of 2025 revenue at USD 8.61 billion and still 39% in 2034, so it is where the volume sits and where an incumbent's position is hardest to move. Sensors, compounding at 11.27% against 9.01% for Actuators, is where share changes hands over the forecast period. The two rarely sit with the same supplier, and that is the reason a USD 20.5 billion market is not already consolidated.
Suppliers compete primarily on certified-product breadth and depth of the ETS-compatible device range, since a specifier standardises on one brand's actuators and sensors across a project to simplify commissioning. The largest German and French manufacturers hold an advantage in wholesaler and system-integrator distribution built over decades of KNX Association membership, plus in-house engineering support for large commercial specifications. Chinese manufacturers compete chiefly on price and manufacturing scale, winning share in cost-sensitive new-construction and residential retrofit projects. Regional players hold ground in home-market channel relationships and after-sales support rather than on product breadth, where they cannot match the larger suppliers.
Presence matters unevenly by region. With 42% of 2025 revenue in Europe and 30% in Asia Pacific, a supplier's coverage of those two decides most of its addressable base before any product question arises.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from installed-unit volumes: shipments of KNX-certified actuators, sensors and system components tracked against the KNX Association's own certified-product registry, multiplied by realised average selling prices reported through electrical-wholesaler price lists for Europe, North America and the Gulf states. Regional unit counts are weighted by construction-permit and non-residential floor-area data to allocate volume across commercial and residential projects. The resulting bottom-up figure is then checked against the disclosed building-automation or KNX-adjacent revenue lines reported by Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens, Legrand and Hager Group in their segment filings; where a company's disclosed growth diverges from the unit build, the unit-price or attach-rate assumption for that region is revisited and corrected rather than the two figures being averaged.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Interviews are directed at the roles that actually decide a KNX specification: electrical design consultants and system integrators who select the bus medium and device count at design stage, procurement managers at panel and switchgear assemblers who set purchasing volumes, and facilities managers overseeing retrofit budgets in commercial portfolios. Regulatory-affairs contacts at national KNX user-group chapters are sampled to confirm how energy-performance codes are being applied on the ground. Sampling is weighted toward Germany, France and the Benelux countries, where KNX specification is most mature, with a secondary tranche in China and the Gulf states to capture newer-adoption behaviour the European sample would otherwise understate.
Desk research draws on the KNX Association's own certified-product and manufacturer-member registry, national building-energy-performance registers tied to the EU Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast, and customs trade data filed under HS code 8537 for control-panel and automation-component shipments. Construction-permit and non-residential floor-area statistics from Eurostat and national statistical offices are used to allocate demand across new-build and retrofit projects. Company-level context comes from the publicly filed annual reports of Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens and Legrand, read for the automation and digital-building segments in which KNX-relevant revenue sits alongside adjacent product lines.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from three assumptions carried forward from the historical build: continued phase-in of EU non-residential building-automation-system requirements under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive recast, a steady shift in device mix toward IP and wireless media as retrofit projects avoid new cabling runs, and average selling prices that decline slowly as Asia Pacific manufacturing volume increases. The anomaly normalised for is the post-2021 component-shortage price spike, treated as transitory rather than carried into the base pricing assumption. For the forecast to hold, adopted building codes must not be delayed or relaxed and component supply must remain at pre-shortage lead times.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Each regional build was back-tested against recorded 2020-2024 growth in national building-automation shipment data before being extended into the forecast, and any region where the back-test error exceeded the modelled range was re-based on its own unit count rather than adjusted by a blanket factor. Segment-share shifts, particularly the move toward IP and wireless media and toward retrofit projects, were reviewed against installer and integrator interview feedback rather than left as a trend extrapolation. Sensitivities were tested on the pace of EU code enforcement and on Asia Pacific construction-permit growth, since these two inputs move the forecast total the most.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmest in the European commercial-building and new-construction figures, where certified-product registries and code-driven adoption give a direct, traceable basis. It is weaker in the retrofit and residential splits, where project-level reporting is thin and the estimate relies more on installer interview feedback than on filed data. Asia Pacific unit counts carry the widest band, since manufacturer-level disclosure is limited to a handful of listed suppliers and much of the market is served by companies that do not publish product-line revenue. A material slowdown in EU code enforcement is the clearest event that would force a downward revision.
