Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from application volumes and realised prices. Coated surface area is derived from steel and alloy steel production, shipbuilding output, pipeline and tank installation activity, and power transmission structure build-outs, then converted to coating volume using standard dry-film-thickness and application-loss assumptions for solvent-based, water-based and powder formulations. Volumes are multiplied by regional average selling prices reported for zinc-rich and zinc silicate systems to produce a bottom-up revenue figure for each application and region. That figure is then checked against the disclosed protective-coatings segment revenue of the major formulators named in this report; where the two diverge, the correction is made to the underlying volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build, not by averaging in the disclosed figure.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary input comes from conversations with coating formulators' commercial and technical sales leads, procurement managers at engineering, procurement and construction contractors and asset owners in marine, oil and gas and power generation, and applicators who specify and apply zinc-rich systems on site. Regulatory and standards-body contacts are also consulted where corrosion-protection codes and VOC limits shape which formulation type is specified. Sampling weights toward the regions carrying the largest coated-steel base, Asia Pacific and North America in particular, with additional outreach into the Middle Eastern oil and gas sector given its concentration of large pipeline and tank projects. Conversations focus on volume trends, price realisation and which formulation type is gaining specification share.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on steel and alloy steel production statistics published by national and regional metals associations, shipbuilding order-book data from classification societies, and pipeline and tank construction activity tracked through customs and project-tender records. VOC and anti-corrosion coating standards published by regional environmental regulators and coatings trade bodies are used to establish which formulation types are permitted or favored in each region. Company-level checks draw on the public financial filings of the major formulators named in this report, where a protective-coatings or industrial-coatings segment is broken out separately from decorative or automotive coatings.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected coated-steel demand in marine, oil and gas, power generation and infrastructure construction, combined with the pace at which water-based and post-cure systems are expected to gain specification share as VOC limits tighten further. Regional price realisation is held broadly flat in real terms, with formulation mix shift, not price inflation, driving most of the revenue change. The 2020-2021 period is treated as a demand disruption tied to delayed industrial and marine maintenance activity rather than a structural shift, and growth rates normalise once that deferred maintenance clears. For the forecast to hold, steel-intensive construction and marine new-build activity need to continue at broadly their recent pace.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Historical figures are back-tested against recorded steel production and marine new-build cycles for 2020 through 2024 to confirm the bottom-up volumes track observed industrial activity rather than a smoothed trend line. Segment-level shifts, particularly the move toward water-based and post-cure systems, are reviewed against the formulation types being specified in publicly disclosed infrastructure and marine tenders. Sensitivities are tested around zinc metal price movements and around a slower pace of VOC-driven reformulation, since both could shift the balance between formulation types without changing total coated-steel demand. Regional splits are checked against each region's own steel production share to confirm no region is over- or under-weighted relative to its industrial base.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in the largest end uses, oil and gas, marine and building and construction, where coated-steel activity is tracked through established industrial statistics. It is weaker in the formulation-mix split between solvent-based, water-based and powder systems, since regional adoption of lower-VOC systems is reported unevenly and some smaller markets disclose little on which type is specified. Country-level splits within Latin America and the Middle East and Africa rest on a thinner base of company disclosure than North America, Europe or Asia Pacific. A sustained change in zinc metal pricing or a faster-than-assumed regulatory push toward water-based systems would be the most likely trigger for revision.
