Market Analysis & Outlook
Granular biochar is a solid, porous carbon material produced by heating wood, crop residue, manure or other biomass in a low-oxygen environment and then processing the resulting char into a uniform particle size suited to mechanical spreading, blending and packaging. It is used as a soil amendment to improve water retention and nutrient exchange, as an additive in animal feed and bedding, as a filtration media for water and wastewater treatment, and as a filler in select industrial and construction materials. Buyers range from commercial farms and agricultural input distributors to municipal utilities, feed manufacturers and industrial processors seeking a stable, granulated form instead of loose powder.
Growth of 11% a year carries the global granular biochar market from USD 112 million in 2025 to USD 290 million in 2034. The full series behind that rate covers USD 45 million in 2020, USD 93.3 million in 2024, USD 126 million in 2026 and USD 200 million in 2030, with 2025 as the base year.
62% of 2025 revenue sits in Agriculture & Soil Amendment, worth USD 69.44 million and rising to USD 162.4 million at 56% by 2034, the largest application line in both years. Growth is fastest in Water & Wastewater Treatment at 14.9% and slowest in Others at 6%. Share moves toward Water & Wastewater Treatment and Animal Feed Additive and away from Agriculture & Soil Amendment, Industrial & Construction Materials and Others, though no line shrinks in revenue terms.
Cut by feedstock source, the largest line is Wood-based: 48% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 53.76 million, and 42% at USD 121.8 million by 2034. Manure-based grows faster at 13.1% against 9.5%, moving from 12% of revenue to 14% by 2034. Both this axis and the application one divide the same revenue, which is why they are alternative views, not components.
North America is the largest region at 32% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 35.84 million and reaching USD 84.1 million by 2034. Europe follows at 28%, moving from USD 31.36 million to USD 69.6 million, and Middle East and Africa is the smallest at 5%. Share shifts toward Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa over the forecast period, so the regional split repays a close reading.
Coverage extends to five regions, five application lines and five segmentation axes over the full fifteen years. The 2025 total itself is a triangulation of published figures and category proxies, short of a directly sourced total, and the splits below are estimated on that same basis, a bound on their precision worth carrying into any use of them.

Market Trends
Revenue Share, By By Application
Base year 2025Agriculture & Soil Amendment leads with 62.0% of by application segment revenue.
Share of by application segment revenue, most recent base year.
Three movements define the forecast period in the global granular biochar market: how the application mix changes, where regional weight shifts, and the rate at which the total compounds.
The direction of the market is not in question in any of the three. Each line and each region grows in revenue terms; what separates them is which takes the larger part of the growth.
The application mix tilts toward Water & Wastewater Treatment. Between 2026 and 2034, 14.9% growth in Water & Wastewater Treatment against 6% in Others pulls the application mix apart. Water & Wastewater Treatment takes its share of revenue from 16% to 22% while Others gives up ground, from 3% to 2%. Neither contracts: USD 17.92 million becomes USD 63.8 million, USD 3.36 million becomes USD 5.8 million. What the spread decides is which of them a supplier's revenue is exposed to.
The regional balance moves. Asia Pacific moves from 26% of revenue in 2025 to 30% in 2034, worth USD 29.12 million rising to USD 87 million; Latin America moves from 9% of revenue in 2025 to 11% in 2034, worth USD 10.08 million rising to USD 31.9 million; Middle East and Africa moves from 5% of revenue in 2025 to 6% in 2034, worth USD 5.6 million rising to USD 17.4 million. The offsetting side is North America at 32% moving to 29%, Europe at 28% moving to 24%, none of which contracts. Growth is therefore not something a participant inherits from the market; it depends on which regions its revenue is weighted toward.
The series never breaks trajectory. Fifteen years of revenue run USD 45 million in 2020, USD 93.3 million in 2024, USD 112 million in 2025, USD 126 million in 2026, USD 200 million in 2030 and USD 290 million in 2034. There is no discontinuity to time, and 11% forecast growth against 20% historical means the trend continues and does not turn. A plan built on this market is therefore a plan about capturing a share of steady expansion, which is decided on the application and regional axes, not by the headline rate.
Market Growth Factors
Water & Wastewater Treatment carries the market's growth rate
Market Drivers
3- 01Water & Wastewater Treatment carries the market's growth rate
At 14.9% against a market rate of 11%, Water & Wastewater Treatment is the line pulling the average up: USD 17.92 million to USD 63.8 million, and 16% of revenue to 22%. The market's overall 11% depends on that rate holding: at the 6% recorded by Others, the same revenue base would compound to a materially smaller 2034 total. That makes position on the application axis a growth decision, not a product one.
- 02The two largest regions hold most of the base
The largest regional base is North America: USD 35.84 million in 2025 at 32% of the global total, USD 84.1 million by 2034, still 29%. Europe is next at 28% of revenue, USD 31.36 million in 2025 and USD 69.6 million in 2034. Most of the base and most of the growth sit in those two, and a plan spread evenly across regions therefore over-invests outside them.
- 03Fifteen years of unbroken growth underpin the forecast
Revenue rose through USD 45 million in 2020, USD 93.3 million in 2024 and USD 112 million in 2025, a compound 20% across the historical period. The forecast period then runs at 11%, ending 2034 at USD 290 million. With the trajectory already demonstrated over fifteen years, what remains uncertain is the mix, not the direction, which is where the segment and regional sections do the work.
Growth drivers
| # | Growth driver | Impact | Gross contribution (Million) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |

Restraints
| # | Restraint | Impact | Estimated reduction (Million) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | High production and logistics costs relative to conventional soil amendments | Medium-High | −3 | Medium | Medium | Low |
| 2 | Feedstock supply variability and seasonal availability constraints | Medium | −1.5 | Medium | Low | Low |
| 3 | Limited standardization and quality certification across producers | Low | −0.5 | Low | Low | Low |
| Total | −5 | |||||
Drivers contribute 183 Million and restraints remove 5 Million, a net 178 Million, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Separate the 11% into its parts and three show up: an already-large base compounding, the application mix moving toward its faster lines, and regional growth landing unevenly.
Restraining Factors
What holds the forecast back
Market Restraints
2- 01What holds the forecast back
Where the forecast could miss: the bear case assumes carbon credit values for biochar plateau or are challenged on permanence grounds and that feedstock costs rise faster than producers can pass through to buyers. That path reaches USD 246.5 million by 2034 instead of USD 290 million, off an unchanged USD 112 million in 2025.
- 02The largest line is not the fastest
With 62% of 2025 revenue (USD 69.44 million) Agriculture & Soil Amendment is where most of the market sits, and it grows at only 9.7% against the market's 11%. Revenue still reaches USD 162.4 million by 2034 and share still falls to 56%: a drag on the average, not a decline.
Market Opportunities
What the bull case turns on
Market Opportunities
2- 01What the bull case turns on
What would beat the forecast: the bull case assumes carbon credit programs broaden eligibility and credit values for biochar and that water treatment adoption moves from pilot to standard practice faster than in the base case. That case reaches USD 333.5 million in 2034 against USD 290 million, and it is worth testing against a reader's own read of the market.
- 02The opening is on the application axis, not the regional one
Water & Wastewater Treatment grows at 14.9% against 11% for the market, adding revenue from USD 17.92 million in 2025 to USD 63.8 million in 2034 and taking its share from 16% to 22%. It is the place on this axis where share changes hands at scale, so it is where an entrant can take position without displacing the incumbent in Agriculture & Soil Amendment.
Market Challenges
One application line carries the market
Market Challenges
2- 01One application line carries the market
One line dominates: Agriculture & Soil Amendment, at 62% of revenue in 2025 and 56% in 2034, worth USD 69.44 million and USD 162.4 million. Anything that changes demand for it changes the headline number; nothing else on the axis carries that weight.
- 02Single-country exposure in North America
78% of the leading region is one country: the United States, at USD 27.96 million against North America's USD 35.84 million in 2025, and USD 65.6 million by 2034. The consequence is that regional risk here is really country risk wearing a larger label.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesThe market is divided by application and by feedstock source, production technology, distribution channel and packaging; five axes in all. They are alternative readings of one revenue pool, not parts that sum to it.
There are five lines on the application axis, and all of them grow in revenue between 2025 and 2034. What separates them is share: two gain it, the rest give it up.

| Others | $3.36M | 3% | $5.80M | 2%-1 | 6% |
Agriculture and soil amendment leads because granular biochar's slow-release carbon and porosity structure suit broad-acre application equipment already used for fertilizer and lime, giving it the lowest adoption barrier of any use case. Water and wastewater treatment is growing fastest as utilities and industrial dischargers adopt biochar filtration to meet tightening contaminant removal standards, a use case with far more headroom than mature soil markets. Agriculture & Soil Amendment remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order. This is the axis the estimation prices in full, year by year, and the one the regional chapters cut against.

Manure-based Outpaces the Axis While Wood-based Holds the Largest Share
- Largest Wood-based · 48%

| Other Biomass | $6.72M | 6% | $17.40M | 6% | 11.1% |
Wood-based feedstock leads because sawmill residue and forestry byproducts remain the most consistent, lowest-contaminant input available at commercial scale, and existing pyrolysis units are calibrated around its moisture and ash profile. Agricultural residue-based biochar is growing fastest as crop-waste valorization programs and stricter field-burning restrictions push producers to collect residues that were previously discarded or burned on-site. The order does not change: Wood-based is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

| Hydrothermal Carbonization | $8.96M | 8% | $31.90M | 11%+3 | 15.2% |
Pyrolysis leads because it is the most commercially proven route, with established equipment vendors, predictable char yield and a long track record supporting lender and offtake confidence. Hydrothermal carbonization is growing fastest from its small base as processors seek a route suited to wetter feedstocks such as manure and food waste, avoiding the drying costs that limit pyrolysis economics for those inputs. Pyrolysis remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

| Online Retail | $8.96M | 8% | $43.50M | 15%+7 | 19.2% |
Direct and business-to-business sales lead because the largest buyers, commercial farms, feedlots and industrial water treatment operators, purchase in volumes that justify negotiating straight with producers and cutting out margin layers. Online retail is growing fastest as smaller-scale growers and specialty horticulture buyers, who lack an existing supplier relationship, increasingly source bagged product through e-commerce instead of a local distributor. By 2034 Direct/B2B Sales is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

| Bagged | $32.48M | 29% | $102M | 35%+6 | 13.5% |
Bulk packaging leads because large agricultural, industrial and water-treatment buyers move product by the truckload and have their own on-site handling and storage equipment already set up for a bulk material. Bagged formats are growing fastest as home gardening, landscaping and small-plot horticulture demand rises, a segment that needs a shelf-ready unit and has no equipment to handle a bulk delivery. The order does not change: Bulk is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

- Revenue $27.96M → $65.60M
USD 27.96 million of North America's 2025 revenue is generated in the United States, the region's largest market, reaching USD 65.6 million by 2034. At 78% of regional revenue in the base year it is not one market among several, the region's trajectory is largely this country's trajectory. The region itself runs USD 35.84 million to USD 84.1 million over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Agriculture & Soil Amendment at 62% of 2025 revenue, easing to 56% by 2034, and the fastest is Water & Wastewater Treatment at 14.9%, from 16% to 22%. Because the country carries 78% of North America, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Per-application revenue for the United States appears on its own in the full report.
Granular biochar sold as a soil amendment or fertilizer input in the United States falls under state-level fertilizer and soil-amendment registration programs, since the Environmental Protection Agency does not directly license this material outside specific pesticide-adjacent uses. A supplier typically registers each product with the relevant state department of agriculture, discloses feedstock source and production method, and supports any nutrient or carbon claims with verifiable analysis. Where biochar is marketed for carbon removal or sequestration credit, verification bodies such as those operating under Verra or Puro.earth standards apply their own protocols for feedstock, pyrolysis conditions, and stability testing. Labelling must state guaranteed analysis where nutrient claims are made, and material intended for organic production needs to meet the National Organic Program's input criteria. Interstate sale generally requires registration in each destination state separately.
Competition in the United States is decided on the application axis rather than on geography, since suppliers here sell into the same application lines reported globally. Agriculture & Soil Amendment, at 62% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Water & Wastewater Treatment, growing at 14.9%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. Country-level shares and positioning per company sit in the full report.

The largest market in Europe, growing 2.2×.
- In region 1 of 3
- Of region 34%

- Revenue $10.66M → $23.66M
Germany is the largest market within Europe, generating USD 10.66 million in 2025 and projected to reach USD 23.66 million by 2034. At 34% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Europe's revenue is generated in other markets. The region itself runs USD 31.36 million to USD 69.6 million over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Demand in Germany follows the application mix reported at global level: Agriculture & Soil Amendment is the largest line at 62% of 2025 revenue, moving to 56% by 2034, while Water & Wastewater Treatment grows fastest at 14.9% and takes its share from 16% to 22%. Since 34% of Europe's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. Germany carries its own application breakdown in the full report.
In Germany, granular biochar intended for agricultural or horticultural use is regulated as a fertilizer product or soil improver under the national Fertiliser Ordinance, itself aligned with the wider EU Fertilising Products Regulation. A supplier must ensure the material meets defined component-material-category criteria covering feedstock origin, pyrolysis process, and contaminant thresholds before it can carry a CE mark or an equivalent national conformity declaration. The German Biochar Certificate, administered by the Ithaka Institute, is widely used alongside statutory approval to demonstrate feedstock traceability and process control, though it supplements rather than substitutes for the statutory route. Labelling must disclose declared nutrient content, source material, and intended use. Where biochar is proposed for carbon farming incentives, it must additionally satisfy the monitoring and verification criteria set by the applicable certification scheme.
Germany does not have a competitive structure of its own; position here is position on the application axis reported above. The commercially relevant division is 62% of 2025 revenue in Agriculture & Soil Amendment, where the volume is, against 14.9% growth in Water & Wastewater Treatment, where share moves. A supplier weighted toward Europe is competing over a base of USD 31.36 million in 2025, reaching USD 69.6 million by 2034 on the trajectory this study models.

USD 11.65 million of Asia Pacific's 2025 revenue is generated in China, the region's largest market, reaching USD 34.8 million by 2034. It accounts for 40% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Against regional totals of USD 29.12 million in 2025 and USD 87 million in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
China buys along the same lines as the market globally; Agriculture & Soil Amendment first at 62% of 2025 revenue and 56% in 2034, Water & Wastewater Treatment fastest at 14.9% on a share moving from 16% to 22%. With 40% of Asia Pacific concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. The full report reports China by application separately.
China regulates granular biochar primarily through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, which oversees fertilizer and soil-conditioner registration, and through the Ministry of Ecology and Environment where a product is linked to agricultural waste treatment or carbon-related programs. A supplier bringing biochar to market as a soil conditioner must obtain a fertilizer registration certificate, demonstrate that feedstock and finished product meet the relevant national standard for organic or carbon-based soil amendments, and label the product with its registration number, nutrient content, and application guidance. Provincial agricultural departments conduct inspection and sampling to confirm conformity with registered specifications. Where crop residue or manure is used as feedstock, additional environmental compliance documentation tied to agricultural waste utilization policy may be required before sale is permitted.
Supplier positions in China sit on the application axis: the country buys the same lines the global market does, in the same order. Agriculture & Soil Amendment, at 62% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Water & Wastewater Treatment, growing at 14.9%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. The commercial size of that position is USD 29.12 million in 2025 and USD 87 million by 2034, 26% of the global total in the base year.

By 2034 the share has moved up to 11%, because it outgrows the market's 11%; the revenue added here is disproportionate to where the region started.
The application mix reported at global level applies here, with Agriculture & Soil Amendment the largest line at 62% of 2025 revenue and Water & Wastewater Treatment the fastest-growing at 14.9%. Revenue for Latin America is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
Brazil
The largest market in Latin America, growing 3.2×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 55%
- Of global 4.9%
- Revenue $5.54M → $17.55M
USD 5.54 million of Latin America's 2025 revenue is generated in Brazil, the region's largest market, reaching USD 17.55 million by 2034. It accounts for 55% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. The region itself runs USD 10.08 million to USD 31.9 million over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Brazil buys along the same lines as the market globally; Agriculture & Soil Amendment first at 62% of 2025 revenue and 56% in 2034, Water & Wastewater Treatment fastest at 14.9% on a share moving from 16% to 22%. Since 55% of Latin America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. Brazil carries its own application breakdown in the full report.
Brazil regulates granular biochar under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, which classifies it as a soil corrective or organomineral input depending on composition and intended use. A supplier must register the product and its manufacturing facility with the ministry, submit technical data on feedstock, production process, and guaranteed specifications, and obtain approval before commercial sale. Labelling requirements cover declared composition, recommended application rates by crop, and manufacturer registration details, consistent with the normative instructions governing fertilizers and soil amendments. Material derived from specific agricultural or forestry residues may also need to satisfy environmental licensing conditions set by state environmental agencies. Import of biochar or its feedstock is subject to phytosanitary review by the federal agricultural inspection service.
Supplier positions in Brazil sit on the application axis: the country buys the same lines the global market does, in the same order. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Agriculture & Soil Amendment at 62% of 2025 revenue, and taking Water & Wastewater Treatment while it grows at 14.9%. A supplier weighted toward Latin America is competing over a base of USD 10.08 million in 2025 reaching USD 31.9 million by 2034, 9% of global revenue at the start of that period.
Argentina

Agriculture & Soil Amendment leads here as it does globally, at 62% of 2025 revenue, and Water & Wastewater Treatment again grows fastest at 14.9%. Per-axis and per-country detail for Middle East and Africa sits in the full report.
South Africa
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 3.1×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 45%
- Of global 2.3%
- Revenue $2.52M → $7.83M
The largest single market in Middle East and Africa is South Africa, at USD 2.52 million in 2025 and USD 7.83 million in 2034. At 45% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Middle East and Africa's revenue is generated in other markets. Against regional totals of USD 5.6 million in 2025 and USD 17.4 million in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
South Africa buys along the same lines as the market globally; Agriculture & Soil Amendment first at 62% of 2025 revenue and 56% in 2034, Water & Wastewater Treatment fastest at 14.9% on a share moving from 16% to 22%. Its 45% weight in Middle East and Africa means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Revenue by application for South Africa is reported separately in the full report.
South Africa regulates granular biochar under the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, administered by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development. A supplier must register the product before sale, providing evidence of composition, source material, and intended agricultural use, and must renew registration periodically as conditions require. Labelling must state the registration holder, declared analysis, and directions for use, and misrepresentation of nutrient or soil-improvement claims is an offence under the same framework. Where biochar production involves burning of biomass, the operator may also need authorization under national air quality legislation covering emissions from thermal processing. Cross-border movement of feedstock or finished product is subject to the department's import and export permitting requirements.
Competition in South Africa is decided on the application axis rather than on geography, since suppliers here sell into the same application lines reported globally. The commercially relevant division is 62% of 2025 revenue in Agriculture & Soil Amendment, where the volume is, against 14.9% growth in Water & Wastewater Treatment, where share moves. The commercial size of that position is USD 5.6 million in 2025 and USD 17.4 million by 2034, 5% of the global total in the base year.

Competitive Landscape
Suppliers Compete on Agriculture & Soil Amendment Volume and Water & Wastewater Treatment Momentum
Competition follows the application split, not the regional one. Volume sits in Agriculture & Soil Amendment, USD 69.44 million and 62% of 2025 revenue, 56% by 2034, which is also where an incumbent is hardest to dislodge. The line that changes hands is Water & Wastewater Treatment at 14.9%, well ahead of Others at 6%. The two rarely sit with the same supplier, and that is the reason a USD 112 million market is not already consolidated.
Producers compete primarily on feedstock security and pyrolysis capacity, since consistent particle size and carbon content depend on a steady, well-characterized biomass supply. Regulatory experience matters where biochar is sold into water treatment or animal feed, since those uses carry approval and testing requirements that a pure soil-amendment supplier does not face. Established players hold an edge in production scale and multi-application certification, letting them serve larger agricultural distributors and industrial buyers directly. Smaller and regional producers compete on proximity to local feedstock, shorter delivery distances and flexibility on order size, serving customers a larger supplier finds uneconomical to reach.
Presence matters unevenly by region. With 32% of 2025 revenue in North America and 28% in Europe, a supplier's coverage of those two decides most of its addressable base before any product question arises.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The market was built upward from estimated granular biochar production volumes across major producing regions, combined with realized per-tonne prices that vary by feedstock source, particle grade and end application such as agricultural bulk supply versus bagged retail. Production volumes were derived from pyrolysis and gasification facility capacity utilization, since installed capacity and typical throughput are the most consistent inputs available for a fragmented producer base. That bottom-up build was then checked against the disclosed revenue and shipment figures of the larger named producers; where a company's implied per-tonne price sat outside the range supported by its stated application mix, the underlying volume or price assumption for that feedstock and application combination was corrected to align with the company's own disclosed figure.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary interviews target commercial and procurement roles at agricultural input distributors, feedlot and animal-feed buyers, municipal and industrial water treatment operators, and regulatory or certification contacts who oversee biochar approval for feed or water-use applications. On the supply side, interviews reach production and plant operations staff at pyrolysis and gasification facilities to confirm capacity utilization, feedstock sourcing patterns and realized pricing by application. Sampling weights North America and Europe, where biochar production is most concentrated and carbon-credit programs are furthest along, while also covering Asia Pacific given its scale of agricultural residue supply and growing adoption in soil amendment and water treatment use cases.
Desk research draws on International Biochar Initiative and European Biochar Certificate registries, which list certified producers and their feedstock and application declarations, alongside national fertilizer and soil-amendment registration filings that biochar suppliers must file before sale into agricultural markets. Customs trade data under the harmonized tariff classification covering biochar and related carbonized materials was used to cross-check cross-border shipment volumes. Regulatory filings tied to carbon farming and soil-carbon credit programs in the European Union and North America, along with agricultural residue and soil health datasets published by national agriculture agencies, supplement the producer-level figures.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from expected growth in carbon removal credit issuance tied to biochar, the pace at which agricultural residue-burning restrictions tighten across major producing countries, and the rate at which water treatment operators pilot and then scale biochar filtration media. Pricing is assumed to soften gradually as production capacity expands and logistics costs are spread across larger shipment volumes, partly offsetting volume growth in revenue terms. The historical spike in early adoption years is normalized, since it reflected a small base and not a durable growth rate that could continue indefinitely. For the forecast to hold, carbon credit programs must continue to recognize biochar as an eligible removal pathway at a stable credit value.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Outputs were back-tested against recorded historical growth in biochar production capacity and disclosed shipment volumes from 2020 through 2024 to confirm the bottom-up build reproduces observed trends before being extended forward. Segment-level shifts, particularly the rising share attributed to water treatment and animal feed applications, were reviewed against known facility announcements and application pilots to confirm the direction and pace of the shift hold up against that evidence, not just the model's own trend line. Sensitivities were tested on feedstock price volatility and on the pace of carbon credit program expansion, since those two inputs carry the most influence over the forecast's shape. Regional shares were checked against relative production capacity and agricultural residue availability by region.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmest for the agriculture and soil amendment segment and for North America and Europe, where production capacity, certification registries and carbon credit program data are most complete. It is weaker for water treatment and animal feed applications, which are still moving from pilot to commercial scale and report volumes inconsistently, and for Middle East and Africa, where production and adoption data are thin. A structural risk that would force a revision is a change in carbon credit eligibility rules for biochar, since a large share of forecast growth in the back half of the period assumes that pathway remains open on current terms.
