Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from unit volumes and realised prices by material and size band: plastic pot shipment volumes from injection molders, clay and terracotta firing volumes from regional pottery clusters, and average selling prices drawn from retail and wholesale price lists across the three distribution routes tracked in this report. Volumes convert to revenue using channel specific pricing, since the same pot carries a different price once packaging and last mile shipping are added for e-commerce. This build is then checked against the disclosed revenue of the publicly reporting manufacturers named in this report; where reported revenue implies a different volume than assumed, the unit price or volume assumption for that material and size band is corrected.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target procurement and merchandising managers at retail and garden center chains, category buyers at e-commerce marketplaces, production and sourcing managers at plastic and clay pot manufacturers, and landscaping and nursery operators who purchase pots in bulk for commercial planting. Regulatory contacts are sampled where packaging or plastics-use rules affect a manufacturer's material mix. Sampling emphasises China and India, where the largest concentration of plastic and clay pot manufacturing sits, alongside the United States and Germany, where retail pricing and demand signals for the largest consuming markets are gathered directly from channel buyers rather than from manufacturers alone.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on UN Comtrade and national customs data under HS codes 3924.90 and 6914.90 for traded plastic and ceramic pots and planters, import and export volumes published by China's General Administration of Customs, and retail price listings from major garden center and home improvement chains. Packaging and plastics-use regulation is tracked through national environment agency registers in the European Union and India, both of which restrict specific plastic formulations used in molded planters. Publicly listed manufacturers' annual reports and investor filings supply disclosed revenue for the top-down check, and horticultural trade body statistics on nursery and greenhouse counts anchor the commercial end-use estimate.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from expected growth in urban households with balcony or patio growing space, the pace at which e-commerce packaging solutions extend online pot sales beyond small and lightweight formats, and planned expansion in commercial landscaping and hospitality construction that drives large-format planter demand. Pricing is assumed to track input costs for resin and clay fuel instead of compressing further, since the category has limited room for additional discounting. The forecast treats the pandemic-era spike in home gardening purchases during 2020 and 2021 as a one-time pull-forward, not a new baseline. It holds only if plastic input costs and freight rates do not move sharply against current levels.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are checked by back-testing the model's implied 2021-2024 growth against the recorded rate of increase in gardening retail sales published by national statistical agencies, confirming the model does not overstate the post-pandemic pull-forward. Segment share shifts, including plastic's continued gain over clay and e-commerce's gain over retail stores, are reviewed against category managers' own stocking and assortment decisions at major retail chains. Sensitivities are tested on resin price movement, freight rate changes, and a slower pace of commercial landscaping construction, each run as an isolated variable against the base case to identify which single assumption moves the forecast most.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in the plastic and clay segments and in the United States, Germany, China, and India, where retail pricing, customs volumes, and manufacturer disclosures triangulate closely. It is weaker in the metal and premium decorative segments, where private manufacturers report little and pricing is set project by project rather than through standard retail lists. Africa and parts of Latin America carry the least reliable base data, since gardening retail is fragmented across informal and unregistered sellers that customs and trade body statistics do not fully capture. A material shift in plastics regulation or a sharp change in resin pricing are the most likely triggers for revision.
