Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from unit volumes: annual registrations of light, medium and heavy duty electric trucks and buses by propulsion type, multiplied by the average transaction price realized in each vehicle class and battery capacity band. Volumes are drawn from national vehicle registration and homologation records; prices are anchored to fleet order data and published list prices adjusted for typical fleet discounts. The resulting bottom-up total is then checked against the disclosed commercial vehicle revenue of the largest manufacturers named in this report, segmented where possible into their electric-only lines. Where the two diverge, the correction is made to the underlying volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build, not by averaging the two figures together.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

Heavy-duty and long-haul segments carry more uncertainty because commercial deployment is still early and mandate timelines in some jurisdictions remain provisional.
