Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from prescription and dispensing volumes, drawing on prescription counts and over the counter unit sales for topical and oral antifungal formulations, then multiplying each by its realized price net of typical channel discounts for branded products and shelf price for generics and OTC lines. That bottom-up build is then checked against disclosed anti-infective and dermatology segment revenue at the companies that report one, and against generic entry timing following patent expiry on major branded actives. Where a unit-volume or price assumption disagreed with a company's own disclosure, the volume or price assumption was corrected; no separate top-down figure was averaged in.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary research targets dermatologists and primary care physicians who prescribe systemic and topical antifungal therapy, hospital and retail pharmacy buyers who set stocking and channel mix, and regulatory affairs contacts at generic manufacturers who can speak to patent expiry and launch timing. Procurement contacts at large pharmacy chains and online pharmacy operators add a channel view that prescriber interviews alone do not cover. Sampling weights toward the United States, Germany, Japan, China and India, reflecting the size of their prescribing populations and the range of regulatory and reimbursement regimes those five markets represent across the wider study.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on the FDA Orange Book and EMA public assessment reports for approved antifungal formulations and their patent and exclusivity status, national prescription claims databases for volume trends by drug class, and customs trade data filed under the antifungal medicament HS code for cross border shipment volumes. Company annual reports and regulatory filings that break out anti-infective or dermatology segment revenue are used where available, alongside national essential medicines list updates that signal when terbinafine or azole formulations gain broader public health system coverage.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected growth in dermatophyte infection incidence, the continuing shift in prescribing toward allylamine and combination therapies and away from older griseofulvin based regimens, and the price erosion pattern that follows each branded active's loss of exclusivity. Retail and online pharmacy expansion in price sensitive markets is treated as a volume driver rather than a price driver. The 2020 and 2021 figures are normalized for the disruption to routine dermatology visits during that period, so the forecast reflects underlying demand and does not carry forward a rebound off an artificially low base.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back tested against recorded prescription and retail sales growth for 2020 through 2024 to confirm the model reproduces observed history before it is extended forward. Segment share shifts, particularly the move from griseofulvin to allylamines and from topical to oral therapy in resistant cases, were reviewed against clinical prescribing guidance, not accepted from the volume data alone. Sensitivities were tested on generic entry timing and on reimbursement policy changes in the largest markets, since either can move realized price materially without changing underlying patient volume.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in North America and Europe, where prescription claims data and disclosed company segment revenue both exist and largely agree. Several Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa country figures rely more on adjacent dermatology market disclosures than on antifungal specific reporting, since that reporting is thinner in those markets. A faster or slower pace of generic entry than assumed, or a meaningful shift in resistant infection rates, are the two developments most likely to require revising this estimate.
