Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The size was built upward from the installed and planned base of continuous and intensified processes: the number of perfusion bioreactors and multicolumn chromatography systems in use, the campaign days they run each year, and the realised prices for systems, single-use assemblies, membranes, resins, media and buffers consumed per run. Volumes were set by application and by manufacturing site type, then priced at transacted levels, net of negotiated discounts. That bottom-up total was checked against the disclosed bioprocessing revenue of listed suppliers, adjusted for the share attributable to continuous use. Where the two disagreed, the volume and price assumptions were corrected; the disclosed figures were not averaged in.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target process development heads and manufacturing science leads at biologics sponsors, procurement and sourcing managers who place consumable contracts, and site operations leaders at contract manufacturers. Regulatory affairs specialists explain how filing strategy affects conversion timing, and supplier product and sales managers describe order patterns and lead times. Sampling emphasises North America and Europe, where most commercial continuous capacity sits, and gives weight to Asia Pacific, where new contract capacity is being added fastest, with lighter coverage of Latin America and the Middle East and Africa. Responses were compared across roles so that a supplier view of adoption could be tested against the buyer view.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on FDA and EMA guidance on continuous manufacturing, including the ICH Q13 guideline, and on regulatory filings that describe approved continuous processes. Company annual reports and investor presentations supply bioprocessing segment revenue, while customs data under HS 8421 (filtering and purifying machinery) and HS 9027 (analytical instruments) informs trade flows. ClinicalTrials.gov shows the biologics pipeline by modality, and BioPhorum working papers and peer-reviewed journals such as Biotechnology and Bioengineering document adoption and productivity gains. Earnings call commentary from listed single-use and chromatography suppliers gives pricing and order signals.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast starts from the pipeline of approved and late-stage biologics and the share of new process designs that specify perfusion or continuous capture. Growth is driven by conversion of existing antibody plants to intensified operation, new capacity at contract manufacturers, and expanding cell and gene therapy volumes. Pricing is held broadly flat for systems and drifts down for consumables as volumes scale. The forecast holds if regulators keep accepting continuous control strategies without added data burdens, if resin and membrane supply stays reliable, and if sponsors that pilot continuous steps carry them into commercial filings. Delayed conversion of the existing plant base would move growth later without removing it.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

The model was back-tested by reproducing recorded growth from 2020 to 2024 using only the inputs available in each year, and the fitted path was compared with the reported bioprocessing growth of listed suppliers. Segment shifts, notably the move toward single-use and toward downstream continuous steps, were reviewed with industry experts. Sensitivities were run on the conversion rate of existing plants, consumable pricing and the pace of cell and gene therapy launches, and the 2034 result was tested against the range of published forecasts for the market. Differences in scope between publishers were identified before any comparison was made.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

The estimate is firmest for chromatography, filtration and bioreactor spend in North America and Europe, where supplier disclosure and installed base data are strongest. It is thinner for cell retention devices, process analytics and cell-free systems, where products are new and reporting is sparse, and for Latin America and the Middle East and Africa. Published figures for this market differ widely because publishers define continuous scope differently, so a band of 25% either side of the base-year value is reasonable. Revisions would follow a regulatory change on continuous control, a shift in conversion pace, or a resin supply shortage.
