Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from unit volumes: the count of machines shipped each year by diameter class and drive type, split across slurry, earth pressure balance, shielded and multi-mode configurations, multiplied by the realized price for each configuration and diameter band. Realized prices are set from tender awards and customs declarations for major bore diameters, adjusted for the cutterhead and drive-system specification each project actually orders. That bottom-up build is then checked against the disclosed equipment and tunneling-segment revenue of the manufacturers named in this report. Where a manufacturer's disclosed revenue implies a higher or lower unit count than the volume data supports, the unit-price or shipment assumption feeding that configuration is corrected, not averaged against the disclosure.
The four stages
