Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The market was built upward from triadimenol technical-grade production volumes reported by Chinese manufacturers and formulated-product shipment volumes into grain, soybean and cash-crop regions, multiplied by realized prices for each formulation type (wettable powder, suspension concentrate, emulsifiable concentrate). Seed-treatment and foliar-spray volumes were estimated separately using per-hectare application rates for wheat, barley and soybean acreage in the regions where triadimenol remains registered. This bottom-up build was then checked against disclosed technical-agrochemical segment revenue from the largest regional producers and against customs export volumes for triadimenol technical material. Where the check diverged from the bottom-up figure, the underlying price or application-rate assumption was corrected rather than averaged with the check.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target commercial and technical managers at generic agrochemical formulators, procurement leads at agricultural distributor and cooperative networks, and regulatory affairs staff who track triadimenol's registration status across jurisdictions. Sampling emphasises China, where the bulk of technical-grade manufacturing sits, alongside India, Brazil and Argentina, where grain and soybean acreage drive the largest formulated-product volumes. Distributor-side conversations focus on seed-treatment uptake and channel pricing, while regulatory contacts help confirm where registrations have lapsed or been renewed. European contacts are weighted toward compliance and registration specialists rather than commercial buyers, reflecting the smaller and more regulation-sensitive nature of demand in that region.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on China's pesticide registration database for technical-material approvals and production licenses, the EU Pesticides Database for triadimenol's renewal and non-renewal status by member state, and India's Central Insecticides Board registration list for formulated-product approvals. Customs trade data under HS code 2933.99 (heterocyclic triazole compounds) is used to cross-check technical-material export volumes from China. National wheat, barley and soybean acreage statistics from FAO and the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service anchor the application-volume estimates by crop and region, and Brazil's MAPA registration list supports the Latin American formulated-product view.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected wheat, barley and soybean acreage under triazole fungicide programs in each region, adjusted for the pace at which seed-treatment formulations displace foliar spray in Asia Pacific and Latin America. Regulatory status is treated as a hard constraint: acreage in jurisdictions where triadimenol's registration has lapsed is excluded rather than assumed to recover. Pricing assumes gradual realized-price gains as the formulation mix shifts toward suspension concentrate, offset by continued cost competition among Chinese technical-material suppliers. For the forecast to hold, current registrations must remain in force in Asia Pacific and Latin America and no replacement triazole chemistry can achieve broad grower substitution within the period.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Historical 2020-2024 growth was back-tested against China's technical-material export volumes and against wheat and soybean acreage trends in the regions carrying the largest share, confirming that the modeled 2022 price rise and 2023 correction match the raw-material cost and generic-oversupply cycle documented in trade data over that period. Segment shifts, particularly the move toward suspension concentrate and seed treatment, were reviewed against formulation launches reported by the largest Chinese producers. Sensitivities were run on the pace of European registration attrition and on Latin American soybean acreage growth, the two inputs most capable of moving the forecast outside its stated range.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmer for Asia Pacific and Latin America volumes, where production and export data are more directly observable, and softer for the smaller European and Middle East and Africa figures, where registration status varies by country and reporting is thinner. The type and application splits rest on production and acreage data and are reasonably firm; the formulation and distribution-channel splits are triangulated from fewer disclosures and should be read as directional. The clearest risk to this estimate is a faster-than-modeled wave of registration non-renewals in additional jurisdictions, which would need to be corrected into the acreage base rather than the price assumptions.
