Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The market was built upward from thiram's estimated production and shipment volumes across seed treatment formulators, agrochemical distributors and rubber-processing buyers, combined with realised per-kilogram prices for wettable powder, suspension concentrate and dry flowable formulations in each region. Regional volumes were anchored to planted acreage for cereals, oilseeds and horticultural crops that use seed or foliar fungicide programs, and to reported rubber-processing capacity in the regions where thiram serves as a vulcanization accelerator. This bottom-up build was then checked against the disclosed agrochemical revenue of the formulators and distributors named in this report; where a region's bottom-up volume implied a price inconsistent with disclosed revenue, the underlying volume or price assumption was corrected rather than the two figures averaged.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary input came from conversations structured around the commercial, procurement and regulatory roles that actually set thiram volumes and prices: formulation-plant commercial managers, seed treatment procurement leads at cooperatives and large farm operators, agrochemical distributors handling registration renewals, and regulatory affairs contacts tracking approval status by jurisdiction. Sampling weighted the regions where thiram volumes are largest and where regulatory status is changing fastest, particularly Asia Pacific seed treatment markets and the European jurisdictions where approval renewal has been most actively contested. Rubber-processing buyers were included separately from agricultural respondents, since their purchasing cycle and price sensitivity differ from seed treatment demand and would otherwise distort a single blended volume estimate.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research drew on national pesticide registration registers that list active thiram approvals and renewal status by country, customs trade data filed under the relevant dithiocarbamate fungicide tariff codes, and the European Union's own pesticide database tracking the status of thiram's approval for specific crop uses. Company-level filings from the formulators named in this report supplied disclosed agrochemical segment revenue used to check the bottom-up build. Rubber industry trade association production statistics were used to size the non-agricultural vulcanization-accelerator demand base, since seed treatment and agricultural trade data alone do not capture that use.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from planted-acreage growth in the regions where seed treatment adoption is still expanding, the pace at which foliar spray demand normalizes in jurisdictions tightening dithiocarbamate approvals, and rubber-processing capacity additions in Asia Pacific that add a non-agricultural demand base not tied to crop cycles. Pricing is assumed to track raw material costs for the sulfur and dimethylamine inputs used in thiram synthesis instead of moving independently. The approval non-renewal already recorded in the European Union is treated as a structural change, not a temporary dip, so European volumes are not assumed to recover toward their earlier level. For the forecast to hold, seed treatment adoption gains elsewhere need to keep outpacing that structural European decline.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against recorded thiram trade and production volumes for 2020 through 2024 to confirm the historical build reproduces observed growth before being extended forward. Segment share shifts, particularly the growing weight of non-agricultural vulcanization demand and the declining share of European foliar spray use, were reviewed against the qualitative direction primary respondents described, not accepted as arithmetic outputs alone. Sensitivities were run on the pace of the European approval-driven decline and on rubber-processing capacity growth in Asia Pacific, since those two assumptions carry the most influence over where the forecast lands within the study period.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is strongest in the seed treatment and cereals estimates, where planted-acreage data and formulator disclosures both anchor the volumes independently. It is weaker in the non-agricultural vulcanization-accelerator estimate, where production data is reported at the rubber-chemicals category level and not broken out by individual accelerator, and in country-level shares outside the largest markets, where reporting is thinner. A structural risk that would force a revision is a further non-renewal or restriction of thiram approvals in a major market beyond the European Union, which would shift volume toward substitute fungicides faster than currently assumed.
