Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from technical-grade tebuthiuron production and shipment volumes, split across pelletized, water-dispersible granule and liquid suspension formulations, and the realized prices those formulations carry into rangeland brush control, forestry site preparation and right-of-way vegetation management. That volume-times-price build is then checked against the agrochemical-segment revenue disclosed by Bayer AG, BASF SE, Corteva Agriscience and FMC Corporation, and against Chinese customs export data for the technical-grade material. Where the two diverge, the correction is made to the underlying volume or price assumption in the bottom-up build, not by averaging in a separate top-down estimate.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target commercial and technical managers at branded formulators, procurement leads at agrochemical distributors serving ranching and forestry accounts, vegetation management contractors delivering utility and transportation right-of-way programs, and land management staff at state and provincial agencies responsible for rangeland brush control budgets. Sampling is weighted toward the United States and Canada, where documented rangeland acreage and right-of-way contracting activity is largest, with secondary weight given to the pasture and forestry regions of Brazil and Argentina and to the established rangeland brush programs of South Africa and Australia.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on the US EPA pesticide product label and registration database entries for tebuthiuron products, Chinese customs export codes covering substituted-urea herbicide technical material, Brazil's ANVISA pesticide registration and re-evaluation records for tebuthiuron, USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service data on grazing and pastureland acreage, the EU Pesticides Database confirming tebuthiuron's non-approved status within the European Union, and university extension service rangeland brush control guidance referencing labeled application rates and treatment intervals.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected growth in managed rangeland acreage under active brush control programs, the pace at which utility and transportation right-of-way vegetation management contracts are renewed, forestry replanting cycles in managed timberland regions, and expected price movement in technical-grade tebuthiuron as Chinese production capacity expands. It normalizes for the episodic nature of large single-year contract wins by land management agencies rather than treating any one award as a new baseline. It holds if regulatory approvals in current-use countries remain stable and brush and woody encroachment continue to require chemical rather than purely mechanical control.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against the growth in technical-grade shipment volumes recorded over 2020 to 2024, and segment-level shifts, across formulation mix and application split, were reviewed against what agrochemical distribution contacts reported observing on the ground. The forecast was also tested for sensitivity to a slower pace of right-of-way contract renewal than assumed and to tighter regulatory restriction in groundwater-sensitive watersheds; the resulting range is what separates the base case from the bull and bear scenarios rather than being folded back into the base case itself.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

The estimate is firmest for North America, where rangeland acreage and right-of-way contracting activity is comparatively well documented, and softer for Latin America and the Middle East and Africa, where registration status and on-ground application volumes are reported less consistently. The formulation and distribution-channel splits carry lower confidence than the application-level split, since they rest on fewer independent sources. A material regulatory restriction in a large existing market, or a sustained shift toward mechanical brush control, is the most likely trigger for a downward revision.
