Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from unit shipments of tablet packing machines by format type, combined with average realized machine prices that vary by automation level and throughput band. Shipment volumes are anchored to disclosed regulatory filings for machinery imports, national manufacturing output data for pharmaceutical equipment, and capacity expansion announcements from generics manufacturers that indicate new packaging line installations. That bottom-up build is then checked against disclosed revenue from the named equipment suppliers in their annual filings and segment disclosures. Where the two diverge, for example when a supplier's disclosed packaging equipment revenue implies a different average selling price than the unit build assumed, the unit-price or throughput-mix assumption in the bottom-up model is corrected rather than the two figures being averaged together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target procurement and engineering leads at pharmaceutical manufacturers and contract packaging organizations who specify machine throughput and format requirements, plant managers responsible for line commissioning and changeover time, and regulatory affairs staff who sign off on packaging validation. Sales and channel contacts at machinery distributors are included to confirm order lead times and regional pricing behavior. Sampling weights toward Germany, Italy, India and the United States, since these markets combine the largest concentration of both machine manufacturers and pharmaceutical production capacity, with supplementary contacts in China and Brazil to capture demand from expanding generics and contract manufacturing hubs outside the established base.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on national trade and customs classifications covering packaging machinery imports and exports, pharmaceutical manufacturing establishment registries that identify active production sites and their scale, and equipment suppliers' own annual reports and investor disclosures where a packaging or life sciences segment is broken out separately. Regulatory filings tied to serialization and tamper-evident packaging mandates in the United States, the European Union and India are used to confirm which packaging formats a given market segment is required to adopt and by when. Industry association benchmarks on machine replacement cycles supplement gaps where supplier disclosure does not separate tablet packing equipment from broader packaging lines.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from expected capacity additions at generics and contract manufacturers, the pace at which manual and semi-automatic lines are replaced with automated equipment, and the rate at which tamper-evident and serialization mandates extend to markets that have not yet adopted them. Machine pricing is assumed to hold flat in real terms, with mix shift toward higher-throughput and multi-format lines accounting for most of the revenue growth, while unit price inflation plays a smaller role. The historical dip recorded in 2021 is treated as a one-time deferral of capital spending and is not carried forward as a trend. The forecast holds if generics capacity expansion in Asia Pacific continues at its recent pace.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Historical output for 2020 through 2024 was checked against recorded shipment and installation data before the forecast was built forward from it, so the base and estimated years reconcile with what actually happened instead of resting on a trended assumption. Segment-level shifts, including the move toward automatic pouch formats and away from manual lines, were reviewed against the same procurement contacts interviewed for primary research to confirm the direction and pace were consistent with what buyers described. Sensitivities were run on machine price assumptions and on the pace of automation replacement, since those two inputs move the forecast total more than any other variable in the model.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is strongest for the pharmaceutical application segment and for the largest markets in North America and Europe, where machine supplier disclosures and manufacturing capacity data are both reasonably complete. It is weaker for the food, cosmetics and chemical application segments and for several Middle Eastern and African markets, where equipment purchases are not consistently reported separately from broader packaging line investments. A structural risk worth naming is that a faster or slower pace of automation replacement in India and Southeast Asia would move the forecast meaningfully in either direction, since that shift is currently the largest single swing factor in the model.
