Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from the installed base of drum, IBC and multi-drum spill pallets in service across chemical, oil and gas, manufacturing and warehousing sites, multiplied by average realized selling prices for nesting, hard top and high-capacity configurations by material (polyethylene, steel and composite). Replacement cycles are layered onto new-installation volume, since containment units already sold continue to be repurchased as they age or are damaged. This bottom-up build is then checked against segment-level revenue disclosed by Brady Corporation's safety and facility products line and by Nilkamal's material-handling business, the two publicly listed suppliers in this market. Where the two diverge, the bottom-up unit-price or replacement-cycle assumption is the one corrected, not the disclosed revenue.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target environmental health and safety managers, procurement leads at chemical and manufacturing facilities, and product managers at spill-containment manufacturers and industrial safety distributors, since these roles set specification, budget and replacement timing for containment equipment. Regulatory affairs contacts at facilities operating under EPA secondary-containment or equivalent regional rules are included to confirm how compliance deadlines translate into purchase timing. Sampling weights North America and Europe, where secondary-containment regulation is most codified and disclosure is richest, while supplementing with distributor and manufacturer contacts in Asia Pacific to capture the region's faster industrial buildout.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on EPA Spill Prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) rule filings and state-level secondary-containment registers, UL secondary-containment certification listings, and import-export data under the harmonized tariff code covering polyethylene and steel containment equipment. Trade-body benchmarks from industrial packaging and material-handling associations supply unit-price ranges for nesting and hard top formats, and public company filings from Brady Corporation and Nilkamal provide segment-level revenue for their safety and material-handling product lines. Customs shipment records for rotationally molded polyethylene containment products are used to cross-check regional volume splits.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built on continued tightening of secondary-containment enforcement in North America and Europe, gradual adoption of equivalent standards across Asia Pacific manufacturing hubs, and the ongoing shift of liquid storage from drums toward reusable IBC totes, which changes the containment footprint a facility needs. Pricing is held flat in real terms, since polyethylene resin costs have stabilized, with material mix shifting further toward polyethylene and composite designs at steel's expense. The forecast normalizes for the temporary destocking that followed the 2022-2023 industrial slowdown, treating 2024 replacement volume as a return to trend rather than a new baseline. For the forecast to hold, secondary-containment enforcement needs to keep tightening, not loosen.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded 2020-2024 growth in industrial safety equipment spending and against Brady Corporation's and Nilkamal's disclosed year-over-year revenue in adjacent containment and material-handling lines, confirming the historical build tracks within a normal margin of actual reported growth. Segment-level shifts, particularly the move toward IBC-format containment and polyethylene material, were reviewed against distributor sell-through patterns rather than accepted from a single source. Sensitivities were run on resin price movement, since a sustained polyethylene cost increase would narrow its price advantage over steel, and on the pace of secondary-containment enforcement in Asia Pacific, the assumption the regional forecast is most exposed to.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

The North America estimate is the firmest, anchored to codified secondary-containment rules and to Brady Corporation's disclosed segment revenue. Europe rests on the same regulatory footing but without an equivalent public filing to check against, since its leading suppliers are privately held. Asia Pacific benefits from Nilkamal's public disclosure but otherwise rests more on adjacent industrial-equipment proxies, and Latin America and the Middle East and Africa are the least certain, since enforcement timing and reporting are both thinner there. The application and end-use splits are triangulated rather than directly disclosed by any single company. A materially slower rollout of secondary-containment enforcement outside North America is the main risk that would force a downward revision.
