Market Analysis & Outlook
Solid phase extraction equipment covers the cartridges, extraction disks, well plates and associated manual and automated processing systems used to isolate, concentrate or clean up target analytes from a liquid sample ahead of chromatographic or spectrometric analysis. The category spans single-use consumable formats sized for individual sample runs through to multi-well plate formats designed for high-throughput, automated processing on robotic liquid-handling platforms. Buyers are laboratories that run quantitative chemical analysis as a core function: pharmaceutical and contract-testing labs preparing samples for bioanalytical assays, environmental and food-testing labs screening for regulated contaminants, and forensic and clinical toxicology labs processing casework and patient samples.
Growth of 7.95% a year carries the global solid phase extraction spe equipment market from USD 397 million in 2025 to USD 789 million in 2034. The full series behind that rate covers USD 265 million in 2020, USD 365 million in 2024, USD 428 million in 2026 and USD 581 million in 2030, with 2025 as the base year.
57.8% of 2025 revenue sits in SPE Cartridges, worth USD 229.5 million and rising to USD 410.3 million at 52% by 2034, the largest type line in both years. Growth is fastest in Well Plate at 10.68% and slowest in SPE Disk at 5.74%. The lines gaining share are Well Plate. SPE Cartridges and SPE Disk lose share without losing revenue.
By application, Biological accounts for 42% of 2025 revenue at USD 166.7 million, reaching USD 347.2 million and 44% by 2034. Food grows faster at 8.52% against 8.49%, moving from 20% of revenue to 21% by 2034. This axis divides the same revenue as the type split instead of adding to it, so the two are read together and never summed.
North America is the largest region at 33.6% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 133.4 million and reaching USD 244.5 million by 2034. Asia Pacific follows at 29.5%, moving from USD 117.1 million to USD 268.3 million, and Middle East and Africa is the smallest at 4.8%. Share shifts toward Asia Pacific and Latin America over the forecast period, so the regional split repays a close reading.
The 2025 total is arrived at by triangulating published aggregates against category proxies, not by an independent count. Segment, regional and country splits are estimated on the same basis, which bounds the precision of the figures above. Coverage runs to five regions, three type lines and five segmentation axes across a fifteen-year window.

Market Trends
Revenue Share, By By Type
Base year 2025SPE Cartridges leads with 57.8% of by type segment revenue.
Share of by type segment revenue, most recent base year.
Three things move over 2026-2034, and they are worth separating: the type mix, the regional balance, and the 7.95% compounding underneath both.
Not one of them points downward. Growth is everywhere in absolute terms, and the interest is entirely in where it lands.
Well Plate outpaces SPE Disk. The widest spread on the type axis is between Well Plate at 10.68% and SPE Disk at 5.74%. Over the forecast period that moves Well Plate from 30.3% of revenue to 38%, and SPE Disk from 11.9% to 10%. In absolute terms Well Plate rises from USD 120.3 million to USD 299.8 million, while SPE Disk rises from USD 47.2 million to USD 78.9 million. Both grow; the gap is wide enough to reshape the mix inside a single forecast window.
The regional balance moves. Asia Pacific moves from 29.5% of revenue in 2025 to 34% in 2034, worth USD 117.1 million rising to USD 268.3 million; Latin America moves from 5.2% of revenue in 2025 to 5.5% in 2034, worth USD 20.6 million rising to USD 43.4 million. The offsetting side is North America at 33.6% moving to 31%, Europe at 26.9% moving to 25%, Middle East and Africa at 4.8% moving to 4.5%, none of which contracts. The practical consequence is that regional weighting decides whether a participant matches the market rate or trails it, regardless of how its own revenue reads.
A continuation, not an inflection. The market moves through USD 265 million in 2020, USD 365 million in 2024, USD 397 million in 2025, USD 428 million in 2026, USD 581 million in 2030 and USD 789 million in 2034. Against 8.42% through the historical period, the 7.95% forecast rate is a continuation; no year in the series interrupts it. That moves the planning question away from timing a turn and onto the type and regional mixes, where the actual movement is.
Market Growth Factors
Well Plate carries the market's growth rate
Market Drivers
3- 01Well Plate carries the market's growth rate
Well Plate compounds at 10.68% against 7.95% for the market, rising from USD 120.3 million in 2025 to USD 299.8 million in 2034 and from 30.3% of revenue to 38%. Set against 5.74% at the other end of the axis, this is the line that decides whether the market's 7.95% holds. Where a supplier sits on this axis therefore decides whether it grows with the market or below it.
- 02The two largest regions hold most of the base
North America is the largest region at USD 133.4 million in 2025, 33.6% of global revenue, and reaches USD 244.5 million by 2034 while holding 31%. Asia Pacific adds a further 29.5% at USD 117.1 million, reaching USD 268.3 million. Most of the base and most of the growth sit in those two, and a plan spread evenly across regions therefore over-invests outside them.
- 03A demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround
Revenue rose through USD 265 million in 2020, USD 365 million in 2024 and USD 397 million in 2025, a compound 8.42% across the historical period. From there the forecast carries 7.95% through to USD 789 million in 2034. A forecast extending an observed trend is a different proposition from one proposing a turn, and that is why no ramp is applied: the 7.95% runs evenly across the period.
Growth drivers

Restraints
| # | Restraint | Impact | Estimated reduction (Million) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Competition from alternative extraction techniques | Medium-High | −25 | Medium | Medium | Low |
| 2 | Budget constraints in academic and public-sector laboratories | Medium | −10 | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| Total | −35 | |||||
Drivers contribute 427 Million and restraints remove 35 Million, a net 392 Million, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
The 7.95% forecast rate rests on three things that can be measured separately: the size of the existing base, the mix shift on the type axis, and where regional growth is concentrated.
Restraining Factors
What holds the forecast back
Market Restraints
2- 01What holds the forecast back
Automation adoption slows as laboratories delay capital purchases, and a material loosening of residue-screening requirements in a large testing market or gains by alternative extraction techniques such as QuEChERS pull volume away from SPE cartridges and plates faster than the base case assumes. On that assumption 2034 revenue lands at USD 710.1 million against the USD 789 million base case, from the same USD 397 million 2025 starting point.
- 02SPE Cartridges holds the blended rate down
SPE Cartridges carries 57.8% of 2025 revenue at USD 229.5 million but compounds at 6.69% against 7.95% for the market, taking its share to 52% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 410.3 million. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
What the bull case turns on
Market Opportunities
2- 01What the bull case turns on
What would beat the forecast: automation adoption in high-throughput bioanalytical and contract-testing laboratories accelerates faster than the base case assumes, and residue-screening mandates in food and environmental testing expand into additional analyte panels sooner than currently scheduled. That case reaches USD 883.7 million in 2034 against USD 789 million, and it is worth testing against a reader's own read of the market.
- 02Well Plate is where share changes hands
Share on the type axis moves toward Well Plate, from 30.3% in 2025 to 38% in 2034, on 10.68% growth against the market's 7.95% and revenue rising from USD 120.3 million to USD 299.8 million. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds SPE Cartridges, which is the harder and more expensive fight.
Market Challenges
Concentration on the type axis
Market Challenges
2- 01Concentration on the type axis
One line dominates: SPE Cartridges, at 57.8% of revenue in 2025 and 52% in 2034, worth USD 229.5 million and USD 410.3 million. No other single change on the type axis moves the total as much as a change in demand for that one line.
- 02The United States is 85% of North America
North America is worth USD 133.4 million in 2025 and USD 113.4 million of that is the United States; 85% of the region, reaching USD 207.8 million in 2034. The consequence is that regional risk here is really country risk wearing a larger label.
Segmentation Analysis

Well Plate Outpaces the Axis While SPE Cartridges Holds the Largest Share
- Largest SPE Cartridges · 57.8%

| Well Plate | $120M | 30.3% | $300M | 38%+7.7 | 10.7% |
SPE cartridges lead because they are the simplest, lowest-cost format and remain the default choice for single-sample manual extraction across most testing laboratories. Well plates are the fastest-growing format as laboratories adopt automated, high-throughput sample preparation to keep pace with LC-MS/MS testing volume. Disks remain the smallest format, used mainly for large-volume environmental water samples where a cartridge bed would clog. SPE Cartridges remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order. Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.

| Others | $39.70M | 10% | $71M | 9%-1 | 6.7% |
Biological applications lead because pharmaceutical, clinical and contract-testing laboratories run the highest volume of bioanalytical sample preparation of any buyer group. Food applications grow fastest as residue and contaminant screening mandates expand testing panels across more food categories. Chemical and industrial applications grow more slowly, reflecting a more mature, already well-served testing base. Biological remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

| Mixed Mode | $87.30M | 22% | $213M | 27%+5 | 10.4% |
Reverse-phase chemistry leads because it retains the broadest range of analyte polarities and is the default first choice for method developers across most sample types. Mixed-mode chemistry grows fastest as laboratories adopt it for complex biological matrices where a single retention mechanism cannot achieve adequate selectivity. Normal-phase chemistry grows slowest, limited to a narrower set of non-polar applications. The order does not change: Reverse Phase is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology buyers lead because drug development and quality-control testing generate the highest and most consistent extraction volume of any end-use group. Food and beverage testing laboratories grow fastest as residue-screening mandates broaden. Academic and research institutes grow slowest, constrained by budget cycles that limit how quickly instrument and consumable purchasing can scale. Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Companies remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

| Automated/Robotic SPE Systems | $151M | 38% | $379M | 48%+10 | 10.8% |
Manual systems lead because they remain the lowest-cost entry point and suit laboratories running lower or variable sample volumes. Automated and robotic systems grow fastest as high-throughput laboratories prioritize consistency and labor reduction over the lower upfront cost of manual processing, a shift already underway in the largest contract-testing and pharmaceutical laboratories. By 2034 Manual SPE Systems is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 85%
- Of global 28.6%
- Revenue $113M → $208M
85% of North America's base-year revenue comes from the United States; USD 113.4 million, rising to USD 207.8 million by 2034. 85% of the region in 2025 means the regional figures are, in practice, a view of this market with others attached. Against regional totals of USD 133.4 million in 2025 and USD 244.5 million in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
the United States buys along the same lines as the market globally; SPE Cartridges first at 57.8% of 2025 revenue and 52% in 2034, Well Plate fastest at 10.68% on a share moving from 30.3% to 38%. Since 85% of North America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. The United States carries its own type breakdown in the full report.
Solid phase extraction equipment sold in the United States is treated as general laboratory apparatus rather than a medical device, so it falls outside direct Food and Drug Administration premarket clearance unless a manufacturer bundles it into a diagnostic workflow that itself needs authorization. Suppliers instead work within voluntary consensus standards from ASTM International and, where extraction cartridges or manifolds touch environmental or food-safety testing, methods recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency. Where the equipment supports clinical or forensic toxicology testing, laboratories using it must operate under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments oversight, which places the compliance burden on the testing laboratory rather than the instrument maker. Electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility conformity, typically demonstrated through Underwriters Laboratories or equivalent certification, is expected before equipment enters commercial laboratories, and accurate performance labelling is required to avoid misbranding under general Federal Trade Commission advertising rules.
Competition in the United States runs between the suppliers this study tracks: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avantor Performance Materials, Waters Corporation, Agilent Technologies, S*Pure Pte Ltd, Merck, Biotage, PerkinElmer, 3M, GL Sciences, Restek Corporation, Orochem Technologies, Tecan SP and ANPEL Laboratory Technologies. SPE Cartridges, at 57.8% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Well Plate, growing at 10.68%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. Per-company positioning and share at country level are in the full report only.

USD 106.8 million of 2025 revenue is generated in Europe, 26.9% of the global solid phase extraction spe equipment market on the way to USD 197.3 million by 2034. Among the five regions it ranks third by revenue in both years.
Its share moves to 25% by 2034, a shift in share, not in direction: revenue climbs every year while the market's centre of gravity moves elsewhere.
The type mix reported at global level applies here, with SPE Cartridges the largest line at 57.8% of 2025 revenue and Well Plate the fastest-growing at 10.68%. The full report breaks Europe out along every axis and by country.
Germany
The largest market in Europe, growing 1.8×.
- In region 1 of 3
- Of region 34%
- Of global 9.1%
- Revenue $36.30M → $67.10M
USD 36.3 million of Europe's 2025 revenue is generated in Germany, the region's largest market, reaching USD 67.1 million by 2034. Its 34% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Europe is not a proxy for it. Set against USD 106.8 million and USD 197.3 million for the region, it is why this market, and not a smaller one, is the one reported in full.
The type pattern in Germany is the global one: 57.8% of 2025 revenue in SPE Cartridges, 52% by 2034, against 10.68% growth in Well Plate taking it from 30.3% to 38%. Because the country carries 34% of Europe, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Revenue by type for Germany is reported separately in the full report.
In Germany, solid phase extraction systems are classified as laboratory equipment under the European Union's general product safety and machinery frameworks rather than as medical devices, so CE marking against the Machinery Regulation and, where applicable, the Low Voltage Directive and Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive governs market entry. Manufacturers must draw up a technical file, issue a declaration of conformity, and affix CE marking before sale, with the Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz und Arbeitsmedizin overseeing workplace and equipment safety enforcement domestically. Where extraction equipment is deployed within accredited testing laboratories, conformity to relevant DIN and harmonized European standards for laboratory apparatus is expected as a condition of accreditation by the national accreditation body, DAkkS. Labelling must clearly state intended use, electrical ratings, and any hazard warnings in German, consistent with general EU product labelling obligations.
Competition in Germany runs between the suppliers this study tracks: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avantor Performance Materials, Waters Corporation, Agilent Technologies, S*Pure Pte Ltd, Merck, Biotage, PerkinElmer, 3M, GL Sciences, Restek Corporation, Orochem Technologies, Tecan SP and ANPEL Laboratory Technologies. Volume sits in SPE Cartridges at 57.8% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Well Plate at 10.68% growth. That makes Europe a 26.9% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 106.8 million rising to USD 197.3 million, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.

29.5% of the global solid phase extraction spe equipment market sits in Asia Pacific in 2025, worth USD 117.1 million and reaches USD 268.3 million by 2034. That makes it the second-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
34% of global revenue sits here by 2034, up from the 2025 level, at a pace above the 7.95% global rate, so this region warrants separate treatment and should not be scaled off the total.
Within the region the type split tracks the global one; 57.8% of 2025 revenue in SPE Cartridges, fastest growth of 10.68% in Well Plate. The full report breaks Asia Pacific out along every axis and by country.
China
The largest market in Asia Pacific, growing 2.4×.
- In region 1 of 3
- Of region 40%
- Of global 11.8%
- Revenue $46.80M → $110M
The largest single market in Asia Pacific is China, at USD 46.8 million in 2025 and USD 110 million in 2034. It accounts for 40% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Against regional totals of USD 117.1 million in 2025 and USD 268.3 million in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
China buys along the same lines as the market globally; SPE Cartridges first at 57.8% of 2025 revenue and 52% in 2034, Well Plate fastest at 10.68% on a share moving from 30.3% to 38%. With 40% of Asia Pacific concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. Per-type revenue for China appears on its own in the full report.
Solid phase extraction equipment is regulated in China as general scientific and laboratory instrumentation under the State Administration for Market Regulation rather than as a medical device, so it does not require National Medical Products Administration registration unless integrated into a registered diagnostic system. Compliance instead centres on Compulsory Product Certification, commonly known as CCC certification, for electrical safety where the equipment falls within scope, alongside conformity to relevant national GB standards covering laboratory apparatus performance and safety. Import and customs clearance require accurate technical documentation and labelling in Chinese identifying manufacturer, intended use, and electrical specifications. Laboratories using the equipment for environmental, food, or pharmaceutical testing must additionally follow method and quality requirements set by sector regulators such as the Ministry of Ecology and Environment or the National Institutes for Food and Drug Control, which govern the testing process rather than the extraction hardware itself.
In China the field is Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avantor Performance Materials, Waters Corporation, Agilent Technologies, S*Pure Pte Ltd, Merck, Biotage, PerkinElmer, 3M, GL Sciences, Restek Corporation, Orochem Technologies, Tecan SP and ANPEL Laboratory Technologies. The commercially relevant division is 57.8% of 2025 revenue in SPE Cartridges, where the volume is, against 10.68% growth in Well Plate, where share moves. That makes Asia Pacific a 29.5% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 117.1 million rising to USD 268.3 million, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.

Share climbs to 5.5% by 2034, on growth above the market's own 7.95%, and with a bigger contribution to the revenue added over the period than the base-year figure suggests.
Within the region the type split tracks the global one; 57.8% of 2025 revenue in SPE Cartridges, fastest growth of 10.68% in Well Plate. Per-axis and per-country detail for Latin America sits in the full report.
Brazil
The largest market in Latin America, growing 2.1×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 54.9%
- Of global 2.8%
- Revenue $11.30M → $23.90M
Brazil is the largest market within Latin America, generating USD 11.3 million in 2025 and projected to reach USD 23.9 million by 2034. At 54.9% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Latin America's revenue is generated in other markets. The region itself runs USD 20.6 million to USD 43.4 million over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is SPE Cartridges at 57.8% of 2025 revenue, easing to 52% by 2034, and the fastest is Well Plate at 10.68%, from 30.3% to 38%. Its 54.9% weight in Latin America means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Revenue by type for Brazil is reported separately in the full report.
Brazil regulates solid phase extraction equipment as general laboratory instrumentation rather than as a medical device, placing it outside the direct registration authority of Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária unless it forms part of an in vitro diagnostic system that itself requires ANVISA approval. Electrical and safety conformity is instead assessed under the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology, whose certification scheme covers relevant laboratory equipment for electrical safety and metrological reliability before commercial distribution. Import documentation must include accurate Portuguese-language labelling describing intended use, manufacturer details, and safety warnings, consistent with general consumer and industrial product rules enforced by Brazil's consumer protection authorities. Laboratories applying the equipment within accredited testing environments must additionally meet quality standards set by the national accreditation body, Coordenação Geral de Acreditação, as a condition of maintaining accreditation.
Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avantor Performance Materials, Waters Corporation, Agilent Technologies, S*Pure Pte Ltd, Merck, Biotage, PerkinElmer, 3M, GL Sciences, Restek Corporation, Orochem Technologies, Tecan SP and ANPEL Laboratory Technologies are the suppliers covered in Brazil. Volume sits in SPE Cartridges at 57.8% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Well Plate at 10.68% growth. The commercial size of that position is USD 20.6 million in 2025 and USD 43.4 million by 2034, 5.2% of the global total in the base year.

Middle East and Africa Market Analysis
The 5th-largest region covered — 0.3 points of share move elsewhere by 2034, while revenue still grows 1.9×.
- Rank 5 of 5
- 2025 share 4.8%
- By 2034 4.5%
- Revenue $19.10M → $35.50M
USD 19.1 million of 2025 revenue is generated in Middle East and Africa, 4.8% of the global solid phase extraction spe equipment market on the way to USD 35.5 million by 2034. Among the five regions it ranks fifth by revenue in both years.
Its share moves to 4.5% by 2034, a shift in share, not in direction: revenue climbs every year while the market's centre of gravity moves elsewhere.
Within the region the type split tracks the global one; 57.8% of 2025 revenue in SPE Cartridges, fastest growth of 10.68% in Well Plate. Middle East and Africa is reported axis by axis and country by country in the full study.
Saudi Arabia
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 35.1%
- Of global 1.7%
- Revenue $6.70M → $12.40M
The largest single market in Middle East and Africa is Saudi Arabia, at USD 6.7 million in 2025 and USD 12.4 million in 2034. It accounts for 35.1% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Against regional totals of USD 19.1 million in 2025 and USD 35.5 million in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
The type pattern in Saudi Arabia is the global one: 57.8% of 2025 revenue in SPE Cartridges, 52% by 2034, against 10.68% growth in Well Plate taking it from 30.3% to 38%. Because the country carries 35.1% of Middle East and Africa, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Per-type revenue for Saudi Arabia appears on its own in the full report.
In Saudi Arabia, solid phase extraction equipment is treated as general laboratory apparatus and is regulated primarily through the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, which sets conformity requirements for imported laboratory and scientific instruments and administers the Saudi Product Safety Program covering electrical and safety compliance. Where such equipment supports testing tied to pharmaceuticals, food, or clinical diagnostics, the Saudi Food and Drug Authority sets requirements for the testing methods and any diagnostic systems the equipment feeds into, though the extraction hardware itself is not separately registered as a medical device. Importers must provide a certificate of conformity and accurate Arabic-language labelling identifying manufacturer, intended use, and safety information before customs clearance. Laboratories operating under Gulf Cooperation Council accreditation frameworks are additionally expected to demonstrate that equipment used in accredited test methods meets applicable regional and international laboratory standards.
In Saudi Arabia the field is Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avantor Performance Materials, Waters Corporation, Agilent Technologies, S*Pure Pte Ltd, Merck, Biotage, PerkinElmer, 3M, GL Sciences, Restek Corporation, Orochem Technologies, Tecan SP and ANPEL Laboratory Technologies. SPE Cartridges, at 57.8% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Well Plate, growing at 10.68%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. The commercial size of that position is USD 19.1 million in 2025 and USD 35.5 million by 2034, 4.8% of the global total in the base year.

Competitive Landscape
Suppliers Compete on SPE Cartridges Volume and Well Plate Momentum
The field covered here is Thermo Fisher Scientific, Avantor Performance Materials, Waters Corporation, Agilent Technologies, S*Pure Pte Ltd, Merck, Biotage, PerkinElmer, 3M, GL Sciences, Restek Corporation, Orochem Technologies, Tecan SP and ANPEL Laboratory Technologies.
The type axis, not the regional one, is where competition happens. Volume sits in SPE Cartridges, USD 229.5 million and 57.8% of 2025 revenue, 52% by 2034, which is also where an incumbent is hardest to dislodge. Well Plate, compounding at 10.68% against 5.74% for SPE Disk, is where share changes hands over the forecast period. Holding the first and taking the second are separate capabilities, which is why a market of USD 397 million supports as many suppliers as it does.
Scale in manufacturing and formulation chemistry separates the largest suppliers from the rest: consistent cartridge bed-mass and plate-well uniformity across production lots matters more to a regulated testing lab than price, and only the largest manufacturers sustain that consistency at volume. Regulatory and validation experience is a second edge; a supplier that documents extraction recovery data against major method-validation guidelines qualifies into pharmaceutical and contract-testing labs faster. Distribution and channel reach decide who wins the smaller academic and regional labs, where a local distributor relationship matters more than brand. Smaller suppliers compete on price and application-specific chemistry for niche analyte classes.
Geographic reach is the other axis of competition. North America alone accounts for 33.6% of 2025 revenue, so a supplier absent there is absent from the largest part of the market whatever its position elsewhere; Asia Pacific adds a further 29.5%.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from unit volumes and realized prices for the three product forms sold in this market: cartridges, extraction disks and well plates. Cartridge and plate shipment volumes are estimated from consumables manufacturers' production disclosures and distributor sell-through data, multiplied by average selling prices across bed-mass and plate-well-count configurations. Automated system unit counts and average prices are added separately, since a robotic platform sells at a different price point than a manual cartridge rack. This bottom-up build is then checked against the sample-preparation revenue lines disclosed by Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waters, Agilent, Merck and Biotage. Where the two diverge, the bottom-up unit-price or volume assumption is corrected; the disclosed figure is not averaged in.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Interview targets are chosen for the roles that actually decide an SPE purchase: laboratory procurement and instrument managers at contract-testing and pharmaceutical quality-control labs, method-development chemists who select cartridge or plate chemistry for a given analyte class, and channel managers at the distributors that carry cartridge and disk lines into smaller testing labs. Regulatory affairs contacts at environmental and food-testing laboratories are included to gauge how mandated residue-screening panels translate into extraction volume. Sampling is weighted toward North America and Europe, where pharmaceutical and environmental testing capacity concentrates, with additional coverage in China and India to capture the faster-growing contract-testing base in Asia Pacific.
Desk research draws on the FDA's bioanalytical method validation guidance and equivalent EMA guidelines, which set the extraction and recovery standards that determine cartridge chemistry selection. U.S. EPA method compendia (Method 525, Method 8270 and related solid-phase extraction protocols) anchor volume estimates for environmental testing. Food-safety residue limits published under Codex Alimentarius and EU Regulation 396/2005 inform the food-testing segment. Trade classification data under HS code 3822 for diagnostic and laboratory reagents is used to cross-check cross-border shipment volumes, alongside laboratory-products segment disclosures filed by the major suppliers named in this report.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from three assumptions: continued expansion of bioanalytical and clinical testing volume as drug pipelines and diagnostic panels grow, a steady shift of sample throughput from manual cartridges to automated well-plate systems as labs scale, and tightening residue-screening mandates in food and environmental testing that add extraction volume independent of underlying test-market growth. Pricing is assumed to hold flat in real terms, since cartridge and plate chemistry is a mature, competitively supplied category. For the forecast to hold, testing-laboratory capacity must keep expanding at close to its recent pace and no major regulatory rollback of residue-screening requirements should occur in the largest testing markets.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Historical output for 2020 through 2024 is back-tested against recorded growth in laboratory-consumables spending and against the bioanalytical and environmental-testing capacity data published by national laboratory-accreditation bodies. Segment-share shifts, in particular the move from cartridges toward automated well-plate formats, are reviewed against equipment order patterns disclosed by the automation-system suppliers in this report. Sensitivities are tested on the two assumptions most likely to move the forecast: the pace of automation adoption and the rate at which residue-screening mandates expand testing volume. Both are flexed independently to confirm the base case does not depend on either assumption holding at its most favorable value.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmer for the cartridge and well-plate product lines and for the pharmaceutical and environmental end uses, where supplier disclosures and testing-volume data are available and consistent with each other. It is thinner for the academic and research end-use segment, where purchasing is dispersed across many small institutional buyers and reporting is sparse, and for the disk format, which several suppliers fold into broader sample-preparation lines instead of reporting it separately. A structural risk worth naming is regulatory change: a material loosening of residue-screening requirements in a large testing market would lower extraction volume growth faster than this forecast assumes.
