Market Analysis & Outlook
PXI (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) is a modular, chassis-based instrumentation platform that combines individual measurement and signal-routing modules, such as source measure units, digitizers, switches, and RF and microwave analyzers, inside a shared chassis and controller rather than as separate benchtop boxes. Buyers are engineering teams building automated test systems for production, validation, or research use, most often in semiconductor test, aerospace and defense test programs, wireless device and infrastructure testing, and automotive electronics validation. The category covers the modules, chassis, and controllers themselves along with the software and integration services needed to assemble and maintain a working test system.
Growth of 7.7% a year carries the global pxi market from USD 1.65 billion in 2025 to USD 3.24 billion in 2034. The full series behind that rate covers USD 1.15 billion in 2020, USD 1.53 billion in 2024, USD 1.79 billion in 2026 and USD 2.42 billion in 2030, with 2025 as the base year.
On the product type axis, growth rates run from 5.41% for Digital Multimeters up to 11.97% for RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers. Source Measure Units (SMUs) carries the volume: USD 0.43 billion and 26.1% of revenue in 2025, USD 0.75 billion and 23.1% in 2034. RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers and Data Acquisition & Control Modules take share over the period; Source Measure Units (SMUs), Switches & Signal Routing Modules, Digital Multimeters and Oscilloscopes & Digitizers give it up while still growing in absolute terms.
By type, High Measurement Speed accounts for 44.8% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.74 billion, reaching USD 1.52 billion and 46.9% by 2034. It is also the fastest-growing line on this axis at 8.32%, so the split concentrates rather than balances over the period. This axis divides the same revenue as the product type split rather than adding to it, so the two are read together rather than summed.
Geographically, 38.2% of 2025 revenue sits in North America (USD 0.63 billion rising to USD 1.1 billion) ahead of Asia Pacific at 27.9% and USD 0.46 billion. Middle East and Africa is smallest, at 3.6%. Because Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa take share, the revenue added by 2034 concentrates rather than spreading across all five regions.
Behind these figures sit five regions, six product type lines and five segmentation axes, each reported for every year from 2020 to 2034. The headline 2025 value is a triangulation of published figures and category proxies rather than a directly sourced total, and the same applies to the segment, regional and country breakdowns drawn from it.

Market Trends
Revenue Share, By by product type
Base year 2025Source Measure Units (SMUs) leads with 26.1% of by product type segment revenue.
Share of by product type segment revenue, most recent base year.
Three things move over 2026-2034, and they are worth separating: the product type mix, the regional balance, and the 7.7% compounding underneath both.
The direction of the market is not in question in any of the three. Each line and each region grows in revenue terms; the question is which takes the larger part of the growth.
RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers outpaces Digital Multimeters. 11.97% against 5.41%: that gap, between RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers and Digital Multimeters, is the largest on the product type axis. Shares follow: 18.2% to 25.9% for RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers, 12.1% to 9.9% for Digital Multimeters. Revenue rises on both sides; USD 0.3 billion to USD 0.84 billion and USD 0.2 billion to USD 0.32 billion respectively, so this is a change in composition, not a contraction, and one forecast window is long enough for it to matter.
Regional weight shifts toward Asia Pacific and Middle East and Africa. Asia Pacific moves from 27.9% of revenue in 2025 to 34.9% in 2034, worth USD 0.46 billion rising to USD 1.13 billion; Middle East and Africa moves from 3.6% of revenue in 2025 to 4% in 2034, worth USD 0.06 billion rising to USD 0.13 billion. The offsetting side is North America at 38.2% moving to 34%, Europe at 26.1% moving to 23.1%, Latin America at 4.2% moving to 4%, none of which contracts. That makes the regional split worth reading rather than scaling from the global rate: the same market rate produces different outcomes depending on where a supplier's revenue sits.
The series never breaks trajectory. The market moves through USD 1.15 billion in 2020, USD 1.53 billion in 2024, USD 1.65 billion in 2025, USD 1.79 billion in 2026, USD 2.42 billion in 2030 and USD 3.24 billion in 2034. The forecast rate of 7.7% sits against 7.49% over the historical period, so the projection extends an observed trend instead of proposing a new one. A plan built on this market is therefore a plan about capturing a share of steady expansion, which is decided on the product type and regional axes, not by the headline rate.
Market Growth Factors
RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers adds the most incremental growth
Market Drivers
3- 01RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers adds the most incremental growth
11.97% growth in RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers, against 7.7% for the market as a whole, moves it from USD 0.3 billion and 18.2% of revenue in 2025 to USD 0.84 billion and 25.9% in 2034. Nothing else on the axis grows as fast (Digital Multimeters manages 5.41%) so the blended 7.7% is carried by this one line rather than shared across them. That makes position on the product type axis a growth decision rather than a product one.
- 02Growth lands where the revenue already is
38.2% of 2025 revenue (USD 0.63 billion) is generated in North America, reaching USD 1.1 billion by 2034 at an unchanged 34%. Behind it, Asia Pacific holds 27.9%; USD 0.46 billion rising to USD 1.13 billion. Together the two account for the majority of both the 2025 base and the revenue added by 2034, which is why a regional plan treating all five regions at equal weight misreads where the growth actually lands.
- 03The base has grown every year since 2020
The historical period compounded at 7.49%; USD 1.15 billion in 2020, USD 1.53 billion in 2024 and USD 1.65 billion in 2025. From there the forecast carries 7.7% through to USD 3.24 billion in 2034. Because the growth is already in the record rather than in the projection, the rate is held flat across the forecast rather than ramped, and the risk in the number sits in the mix assumptions rather than in whether the market grows at all.

Drivers contribute 1.71 Billion and restraints remove 0.12 Billion, a net 1.59 Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Three sources account for the growth to 2034: 7.7% compounding across the base, share moving toward the faster product type lines, and above-market expansion in the leading regions.
Restraining Factors
The bear case and what drives it
Market Restraints
2- 01The bear case and what drives it
A bear case of USD 2.95 billion in 2034, against USD 3.24 billion in the base case, rests on one stated assumption: 5G-Advanced/6G test-cycle timing slips and defense automatic test equipment recapitalization budgets are deferred or cut, delaying module upgrade purchases across semiconductor and aerospace-defense customers. Neither case changes the USD 1.65 billion 2025 base.
- 02Source Measure Units (SMUs) grows below the market rate
Source Measure Units (SMUs) carries 26.1% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.43 billion but compounds at 6.3% against 7.7% for the market, taking its share to 23.1% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 0.75 billion. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
Where the forecast could be beaten
Market Opportunities
2- 01Where the forecast could be beaten
A bull case of USD 3.53 billion by 2034, against USD 3.24 billion in the base case, turns on a single stated assumption: wireless standards (5G-Advanced and early 6G) test cycles arrive on schedule and aerospace-defense automatic test equipment recapitalization budgets are fully funded, pulling forward RF and microwave and source measure unit module demand. The USD 1.65 billion 2025 base is common to both.
- 02The opening is on the product type axis, not the regional one
Share on the product type axis moves toward RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers, from 18.2% in 2025 to 25.9% in 2034, on 11.97% growth against the market's 7.7% and revenue rising from USD 0.3 billion to USD 0.84 billion. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds Source Measure Units (SMUs), which is the harder and more expensive fight.
Market Challenges
Revenue is concentrated in Source Measure Units (SMUs)
Market Challenges
2- 01Revenue is concentrated in Source Measure Units (SMUs)
With 26.1% of 2025 revenue and 23.1% of 2034 revenue (USD 0.43 billion rising to USD 0.75 billion) Source Measure Units (SMUs) is where the market's exposure sits. A market leaning this heavily on one product type line concentrates its exposure there, and a shift in demand for that line moves the total more than any other single change on the axis.
- 02North America is largely the United States
82.5% of the leading region is one country: the United States, at USD 0.52 billion against North America's USD 0.63 billion in 2025, and USD 0.9 billion by 2034. Read as a region it looks diversified; read by weight it is not, and the regional forecast inherits whatever happens in that one market.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesThe global pxi market is cut five ways: by product type, type, application, end user and component. Every one of them divides the same revenue, which makes them views of one market from different commercial angles rather than components of it.
Six product type lines are reported. Two of them take share over the forecast period and the rest give it up, though every line grows in absolute terms between 2025 and 2034.

| Data Acquisition & Control Modules | $0.13B | 7.9% | $0.26B | 8%+0.1 | 8% |
Source measure units and switching and signal-routing modules lead because they are the foundational building blocks of nearly every PXI test system, used across semiconductor, aerospace, and automotive programs alike. RF and microwave and vector signal analyzer modules grow fastest as wireless standards evolve and testing devices and infrastructure at higher frequencies and wider bandwidths becomes a larger share of overall test programs. Leadership changes hands: RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers is the largest line by 2034, not Source Measure Units (SMUs). Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.

| Low Power Consumption | $0.38B | 23% | $0.75B | 23.1%+0.1 | 7.8% |
High measurement speed modules lead and grow fastest because production test throughput is the primary cost driver for high-volume semiconductor and consumer electronics manufacturers, who prioritize cutting per-unit test time above other considerations. Small footprint and low power consumption modules remain important for space-constrained rack integration and portable or field test systems, but throughput dominates purchasing decisions across the largest buyer segments. High Measurement Speed remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion rather than in order.

| Others | $0.13B | 7.9% | $0.26B | 8%+0.1 | 8% |
Wireless communication leads and grows fastest because handset, base station, and network infrastructure manufacturers continually requalify test systems as new wireless standards and frequency bands are introduced, driving frequent module upgrades. Aerospace and defense programs sustain a large, steady share through long qualification cycles and sustained government test budgets, while consumer electronics and other applications grow more slowly as those markets mature. Wireless Communication remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion rather than in order.

| Research & Academic Institutes | $0.13B | 7.9% | $0.23B | 7.1%-0.8 | 6.5% |
Semiconductor and electronics manufacturers lead because production test volumes there are the largest of any buyer group, requiring extensive switching and source measure module deployments. Telecommunications equipment providers grow fastest as network infrastructure vendors expand validation of new wireless standards, while aerospace and defense contractors and automotive manufacturers grow more steadily, tied to program timelines and vehicle electronics content growth rather than rapid technology cycles. By 2034 Semiconductor & Electronics Manufacturers is still ahead, making this a shift in weight rather than a change of leader.

| Services | $0.23B | 13.9% | $0.52B | 16%+2.1 | 9.5% |
Hardware leads because chassis, controllers, and instrument modules remain the largest single purchase for any new or expanded test system. Software grows fastest as buyers standardize on shared test executive and driver platforms across multiple programs rather than licensing point tools per project, and services grow alongside it as integration and system validation work scales with more complex, software-defined test setups. Hardware remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion rather than in order.

- Revenue $0.52B → $0.90B
The largest single market in North America is the United States, at USD 0.52 billion in 2025 and USD 0.9 billion in 2034. Because it is 82.5% of the region in the base year, North America's totals move with this one country rather than with a spread of them. Regional revenue of USD 0.63 billion in 2025 and USD 1.1 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
the United States buys along the same lines as the market globally; Source Measure Units (SMUs) first at 26.1% of 2025 revenue and 23.1% in 2034, RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers fastest at 11.97% on a share moving from 18.2% to 25.9%. Since 82.5% of North America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix rather than smoothing it out. Per-product type revenue for the United States appears on its own in the full report.
In the United States, PXI-based modular instrumentation is treated as electronic test and measurement equipment rather than as a specially licensed device category. Suppliers must ensure electromagnetic compatibility under the Federal Communications Commission's equipment authorization rules, which govern unintentional radiators such as chassis-based instrument controllers, and any module with wireless or radio-frequency functionality is subject to separate FCC certification. Electrical safety is addressed through listing by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories, confirming conformity with recognized safety standards for measurement, control, and laboratory equipment. Labelling must disclose the manufacturer, model, and applicable compliance markings, and suppliers remain responsible for post-market conformity if a product is modified or repurposed.
The suppliers tracked in this study (ADLINK, Aeroflex, Keysight, LitePoint, ZTEC Instruments, Marvin Test Solutions, Modular Methods, National Instruments, Pickering Interfaces, Teradyne, VTI Instruments, Astronics Corporation, Averna Technologies and Anritsu Corporation) compete in the United States across the product type lines above. Volume sits in Source Measure Units (SMUs) at 26.1% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers at 11.97% growth. The largest market in Europe, growing 1.8×.
- In region 1 of 3
- Of region 37.2%
- Of global 9.7%
- Revenue $0.16B → $0.29B
USD 0.16 billion of Europe's 2025 revenue is generated in Germany, the region's largest market, reaching USD 0.29 billion by 2034. 37.2% of the region in the base year makes it the largest market here without making it the region. Set against USD 0.43 billion and USD 0.75 billion for the region, it is why this market rather than a smaller one is the one reported in full.
Demand in Germany follows the product type mix reported at global level: Source Measure Units (SMUs) is the largest line at 26.1% of 2025 revenue, moving to 23.1% by 2034, while RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers grows fastest at 11.97% and takes its share from 18.2% to 25.9%. Since 37.2% of Europe's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix rather than smoothing it out. The full report reports Germany by product type separately.
In Germany, PXI instrumentation falls under the European Union's harmonised product-safety framework rather than any Germany-specific scheme. Suppliers must affix the CE mark, demonstrating conformity with the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive and the Low Voltage Directive covering electrical safety, and must compile a technical file and declaration of conformity retained for market surveillance by German authorities. Restricted-substances compliance under the RoHS Directive limits hazardous materials in electronic assemblies, while the REACH regulation governs chemical substances present in components. End-of-life handling is addressed through the WEEE Directive, requiring registration and take-back arrangements. Instructions and safety labelling must be provided in German alongside any other languages offered.

- Revenue $0.18B → $0.45B
China is the largest market within Asia Pacific, generating USD 0.18 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 0.45 billion by 2034. 39.1% of the region in the base year makes it the largest market here without making it the region. Regional revenue of USD 0.46 billion in 2025 and USD 1.13 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
China buys along the same lines as the market globally; Source Measure Units (SMUs) first at 26.1% of 2025 revenue and 23.1% in 2034, RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers fastest at 11.97% on a share moving from 18.2% to 25.9%. Since 39.1% of Asia Pacific's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix rather than smoothing it out. Revenue by product type for China is reported separately in the full report.
In China, electronic test and measurement instrumentation such as PXI-based systems is subject to conformity assessment administered by the State Administration for Market Regulation, with compulsory certification, commonly known as CCC, applying to defined categories of electrical and electronic products before they may be sold domestically. Products incorporating wireless or radio-frequency modules require separate type approval from the radio regulation authority. Restriction of hazardous substances in electronic equipment is governed by China's own RoHS-equivalent management measures, requiring disclosure of restricted materials on product labelling. Importers and domestic suppliers must maintain technical documentation supporting the declared classification and are expected to mark products with the required conformity symbol before distribution.
ADLINK, Aeroflex, Keysight, LitePoint, ZTEC Instruments, Marvin Test Solutions, Modular Methods, National Instruments, Pickering Interfaces, Teradyne, VTI Instruments, Astronics Corporation, Averna Technologies and Anritsu Corporation are the suppliers covered in China. Because the country carries 57.1% of Latin America, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals rather than being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Brazil carries its own product type breakdown in the full report.
In Brazil, instrumentation platforms that include wireless, networking, or radio-frequency modules fall under certification administered by the National Telecommunications Agency, ANATEL, which requires type approval before such equipment may be marketed. Electrical and general product safety conformity is assessed under the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology, INMETRO, whose accredited certification bodies confirm compliance with applicable technical standards for electronic equipment. Suppliers must affix the corresponding conformity identification and provide labelling and user documentation in Portuguese. Importers bear responsibility for ensuring that any third-party modules integrated into a chassis-based system also carry the necessary certification before the combined product is placed on the market.
The suppliers tracked in this study (ADLINK, Aeroflex, Keysight, LitePoint, ZTEC Instruments, Marvin Test Solutions, Modular Methods, National Instruments, Pickering Interfaces, Teradyne, VTI Instruments, Astronics Corporation, Averna Technologies and Anritsu Corporation) compete in Brazil across the product type lines above. Competitive Landscape
Position on the Product type Axis Decides Competitive Standing
The study covers the following suppliers: ADLINK, Aeroflex, Keysight, LitePoint, ZTEC Instruments, Marvin Test Solutions, Modular Methods, National Instruments, Pickering Interfaces, Teradyne, VTI Instruments, Astronics Corporation, Averna Technologies and Anritsu Corporation.
Where suppliers actually compete is along the product type axis. Source Measure Units (SMUs) is 26.1% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.43 billion and still 23.1% in 2034, so it is where the volume sits and where an incumbent's position is hardest to move. Share moves in RF/Microwave & Vector Signal Analyzers, growing 11.97% against 5.41% for Digital Multimeters. A supplier positioned in one is not automatically positioned in the other, which is what keeps a field of this size viable in a market of USD 1.65 billion.
In PXI modular instrumentation, the leading suppliers compete on breadth of calibrated module families spanning switching, source measure, and RF and microwave measurement, on driver and software ecosystem support across LabVIEW, IVI, and industry-standard test executives, and on the manufacturing and calibration scale needed to support high-volume semiconductor and aerospace-defense test programs. Established players also carry deeper qualification history with defense and aerospace primes, a factor that shortens approval cycles for new programs. Smaller and regional suppliers instead compete on category specialization, such as high-density switching or bespoke RF modules, and on faster customization turnaround for lower-volume test programs.
Geographic reach is the other axis of competition. North America alone accounts for 38.2% of 2025 revenue, so a supplier absent there is absent from the largest part of the market whatever its position elsewhere; Asia Pacific adds a further 27.9%.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from PXI module shipment volumes by category, including source measure units, switching and signal-routing modules, digitizers, RF and microwave analyzers, and data acquisition modules, combined with average selling prices for each category. That bottom-up build is then checked against disclosed segment revenue where vendors report it, such as electronic test and measurement segment results from the larger suppliers and semiconductor test segment disclosures from automatic test equipment vendors. Where the bottom-up total and disclosed revenue diverge for a category, the correction is made to the underlying shipment volume or average selling price assumption for that category, not by averaging the two figures together.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary input comes from interviews with test engineering managers and procurement leads at semiconductor manufacturers, aerospace and defense contractors, and contract test houses, plus channel and distribution partners for PXI vendors and regulatory or qualification personnel at aerospace and defense primes who set approval requirements for new test platforms. These roles were chosen because they hold direct visibility into module purchasing volume, qualification timelines, and platform replacement cycles. Sampling emphasizes the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France in Europe, and China, Japan, and South Korea in Asia Pacific, matching where semiconductor and aerospace and defense test spending is most concentrated.
Desk research draws on PXI Systems Alliance specification and compliance member listings, annual report segment disclosures from the larger test and measurement suppliers, trade data filed under the electrical measuring instruments classification through national customs authorities, published defense procurement line items covering automatic test equipment, and semiconductor capital equipment spending tracked by industry trade associations. These sources were chosen because each ties directly to a specific, checkable input in the bottom-up build, whether that is a vendor's own reported revenue, a customs-coded trade flow, or a government budget line, rather than a general industry estimate with no traceable origin.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from projected PXI module shipment growth tied to wireless standard test cycles for 5G-Advanced and early 6G devices and infrastructure, semiconductor capital spending plans at advanced process nodes, and automatic test equipment recapitalization schedules at aerospace and defense primes. Module pricing is assumed to hold roughly flat in real terms, since rising RF and microwave content is expected to offset continued commoditization of simpler switching and multimeter modules. The forecast also normalizes for the 2020 to 2021 pause in test lab capital spending. It holds if wireless standards continue arriving on a roughly five-year cadence and defense test budgets are not cut.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Outputs were back-tested against recorded 2020 to 2024 shipment and revenue trends for the largest module categories to confirm the bottom-up build reproduces known historical growth before it is extended forward. Segment share shifts, including the rising share of RF and microwave modules and the declining share of standalone digital multimeters, were reviewed against test and measurement industry analysts familiar with buyer purchasing patterns. The forecast was also sensitivity-tested against a slower wireless test-cycle scenario and a scenario where aerospace and defense test budgets contract, to confirm the range in the bull and bear cases reflects those specific risks rather than a generic spread.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is strongest for the source measure unit, switching, and RF and microwave module categories, where vendor-disclosed segment revenue and PXI Systems Alliance compliance registers provide a direct anchor. It is softer for software and services revenue, which several vendors bundle into hardware pricing rather than report separately, making that portion of the estimate more dependent on interview input. The main structural risk to this estimate is a delay in wireless standard test-cycle timing or a pullback in aerospace and defense test equipment recapitalization, either of which would push actual growth below the base case.
