Market Analysis & Outlook
Printed circuit board inspection equipment covers the automated optical, X-ray and solder-paste inspection systems used to detect defects such as misaligned components, solder bridging, voiding and incomplete connections during and after board assembly. These systems range from in-line units integrated directly into surface-mount production lines to standalone benchtop units used for rework, prototyping or lower-volume runs. Buyers are electronics manufacturing services providers, original equipment manufacturers with in-house assembly lines, and automotive and industrial electronics producers seeking to control defect rates as board density and component count increase.
Growth of 11.93% a year carries the global printed circuit board pcb inspection equipment market from USD 8.5 billion in 2025 to USD 23.53 billion in 2034. The full series behind that rate covers USD 3.35 billion in 2020, USD 7.45 billion in 2024, USD 9.55 billion in 2026 and USD 14.99 billion in 2030, with 2025 as the base year.
Composition changes more than the total does. Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI), at 14.18%, outgrows Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) at 10.8%, and its share moves from 16.82% to 20.02%. Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) stays the largest line throughout, at USD 4.46 billion in 2025 and USD 11.29 billion in 2034. Share moves toward Automatic X-ray Inspection (AXI) and Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) and away from Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), though no line shrinks in revenue terms.
By application, Commercial Electronics Industry accounts for 45.06% of 2025 revenue at USD 3.83 billion, reaching USD 9.41 billion and 39.99% by 2034. Automotive Industry grows faster at 14.3% against 10.5%, moving from 24.94% of revenue to 30% by 2034. This axis divides the same revenue as the type split instead of adding to it, so the two are read together and never summed.
Geographically, 58% of 2025 revenue sits in Asia Pacific (USD 4.93 billion rising to USD 14.12 billion) ahead of North America at 18% and USD 1.53 billion. Middle East and Africa is smallest, at 4%. Share shifts toward Asia Pacific over the forecast period, so the regional split repays a close reading.
The 2025 total is triangulated from published sources and category proxies, with no independently sourced count behind it. Segment, regional and country splits are estimated on the same basis, which bounds the precision of the figures above. Coverage runs to five regions, three type lines and five segmentation axes across a fifteen-year window.

- The largest region is Asia Pacific, generating USD 4.93 billion in 2025 (58% of the global total) and USD 14.12 billion by 2034, ahead of North America at 18%.
- 50.1% of Asia Pacific's base-year revenue comes from China alone: USD 2.47 billion in 2025, rising to USD 6.78 billion by 2034, which is why it is that region's worked example.
- The study covers 2020 through 2034 with 2025 as the base year, reporting five regions and five segmentation axes separately, with revenue, share and a growth rate for every line in each year.
Market Trends
Revenue Share, By By Type
Base year 2025Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) leads with 52.5% of by type segment revenue.
Share of by type segment revenue, most recent base year.
The global printed circuit board pcb inspection equipment market is shaped over 2026-2034 by three measurable movements: a change in the type mix, a shift in where revenue sits geographically, and the 11.93% rate carrying the total.
None of them reverses the market's direction. Every line and every region grows in absolute terms across the period; the movement is in which of them captures the revenue added.
Composition shifts on the type axis. The widest spread on the type axis is between Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) at 14.18% and Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) at 10.8%. By 2034 the two sit at 20.02% and 47.98% of revenue, against 16.82% and 52.47% in 2025. Neither contracts: USD 1.43 billion becomes USD 4.71 billion, USD 4.46 billion becomes USD 11.29 billion. What the spread decides is which of them a supplier's revenue is exposed to.
Asia Pacific gain regional share. Asia Pacific moves from 58% of revenue in 2025 to 60.01% in 2034, worth USD 4.93 billion rising to USD 14.12 billion. Share moves off the others in turn: North America at 18% moving to 17%, Europe at 14.94% moving to 13.98%, Latin America at 5.06% moving to 5.01%, Middle East and Africa at 4% moving to 4%, each still growing in revenue terms. Growth is therefore not something a participant inherits from the market; it depends on which regions its revenue is weighted toward.
A continuation, not an inflection. Year by year the total runs USD 3.35 billion in 2020, USD 7.45 billion in 2024, USD 8.5 billion in 2025, USD 9.55 billion in 2026, USD 14.99 billion in 2030 and USD 23.53 billion in 2034. The forecast rate of 11.93% sits against 20.47% over the historical period, so the projection extends an observed trend instead of proposing a new one. For a participant that makes planning a question of capturing a share of steady expansion instead of timing a discontinuity, and it is why the type and regional mixes matter more to a forecast than the headline rate does.
Market Growth Factors
Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) carries the market's growth rate
Market Drivers
3- 01Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) carries the market's growth rate
14.18% growth in Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI), against 11.93% for the market as a whole, moves it from USD 1.43 billion and 16.82% of revenue in 2025 to USD 4.71 billion and 20.02% in 2034. Nothing else on the axis grows as fast (Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) manages 10.8%) so the blended 11.93% is carried by this one line instead of shared across them. Where a supplier sits on this axis therefore decides whether it grows with the market or below it.
- 02Growth lands where the revenue already is
Asia Pacific is the largest region at USD 4.93 billion in 2025, 58% of global revenue, and reaches USD 14.12 billion by 2034 on a share rising to 60.01%. North America adds a further 18% at USD 1.53 billion, reaching USD 4 billion. Together the two account for the majority of both the 2025 base and the revenue added by 2034, which is why a regional plan treating all five regions at equal weight misreads where the growth actually lands.
- 03The trend is already in the record
Revenue rose through USD 3.35 billion in 2020, USD 7.45 billion in 2024 and USD 8.5 billion in 2025, a compound 20.47% across the historical period. From there the forecast carries 11.93% through to USD 23.53 billion in 2034. Fifteen years of unbroken growth in the series means the forecast rests on a demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround, and it is why the 11.93% rate is applied flat across the whole period instead of ramped through it.

Drivers contribute 17.23 Billion and restraints remove 2.2 Billion, a net 15.03 Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Three sources account for the growth to 2034: 11.93% compounding across the base, share moving toward the faster type lines, and above-market expansion in the leading regions.
Restraining Factors
What holds the forecast back
Market Restraints
2- 01What holds the forecast back
Where the forecast could miss: bear case assumes slower growth in automotive electronics content and manufacturers extending the service life of existing inspection equipment rather than upgrading, pushing purchases into later years. That path reaches USD 19.41 billion by 2034 instead of USD 23.53 billion, off an unchanged USD 8.5 billion in 2025.
- 02The largest line is not the fastest
With 52.47% of 2025 revenue (USD 4.46 billion) Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) is where most of the market sits, and it grows at only 10.8% against the market's 11.93%. Revenue still reaches USD 11.29 billion by 2034 and share still falls to 47.98%: a drag on the average, not a decline.
Market Opportunities
What the bull case turns on
Market Opportunities
2- 01What the bull case turns on
Bull case assumes faster Asia Pacific SMT capacity expansion and quicker AXI and SPI adoption among mid-tier manufacturers, pulling planned upgrade cycles forward. On that assumption the market reaches USD 26.8 billion by 2034 against USD 23.53 billion in the base case, from the same USD 8.5 billion in 2025.
- 02Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) share moves from 16.82% to 20.02%
Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) grows at 14.18% against 11.93% for the market, adding revenue from USD 1.43 billion in 2025 to USD 4.71 billion in 2034 and taking its share from 16.82% to 20.02%. It is the place on this axis where share changes hands at scale, so it is where an entrant can take position without displacing the incumbent in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI).
Market Challenges
Concentration on the type axis
Market Challenges
2- 01Concentration on the type axis
USD 4.46 billion of 2025 revenue sits in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), 52.47% of the total, and it is still 47.98% at USD 11.29 billion nine years later. Anything that changes demand for it changes the headline number; nothing else on the axis carries that weight.
- 02One country drives the leading region
50.1% of the leading region is one country: China, at USD 2.47 billion against Asia Pacific's USD 4.93 billion in 2025, and USD 6.78 billion by 2034. The consequence is that regional risk here is really country risk wearing a larger label.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesSegmentation runs along five axes: type, application, offering, pcb type and deployment. Each axis cuts the same total revenue along a different commercial dimension, so the splits are alternative views of one market, not additions to it.
There are three lines on the type axis, and all of them grow in revenue between 2025 and 2034. What separates them is share: two gain it, the other gives it up.

| Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) | $1.43B | 16.8% | $4.71B | 20%+3.2 | 14.2% |
AOI leads because it is the lowest-cost, most widely deployed inspection step, used across nearly every SMT line regardless of board complexity. SPI is the fastest-growing category because manufacturers increasingly catch solder-paste defects before reflow, when correction is cheapest, and rising board density is pushing that inspection step earlier in the process. AXI remains the choice for multilayer and BGA-heavy boards. The order does not change: Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds. Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.

Commercial Electronics Industry Led by Application in 2025, with Automotive Industry Growing Fastest
- Largest Commercial Electronics Industry · 45.1%
- Fastest Automotive Industry · 14.3%

| Automotive Industry | $2.12B | 24.9% | $7.06B | 30%+5.1 | 14.3% |
Commercial electronics leads because consumer device makers run the highest unit volumes and replace inspection lines most often as designs shrink. Automotive is the fastest-growing application as vehicle electronics content rises with electrification and driver-assistance systems, pushing automotive suppliers toward the inspection rigor long used in consumer manufacturing. Industrial electronics grows steadily behind both. Commercial Electronics Industry remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

| Software & Services | $1.87B | 22% | $6.59B | 28%+6 | 15% |
Equipment leads because the hardware purchase remains the anchor spend for any inspection line, with software typically bundled or purchased later. Software and services is the fastest-growing offering as manufacturers invest in defect-data analytics, remote diagnostics and line-integration tools that extend the value of equipment already installed, rather than in additional hardware. By 2034 Equipment is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

| Flexible & Rigid-Flex PCB | $2.72B | 32% | $8.94B | 38%+6 | 14.1% |
Rigid boards lead because they remain the default substrate across most consumer, industrial and automotive electronics manufactured today. Flexible and rigid-flex boards are the fastest-growing category as wearables, compact medical devices and space-constrained automotive modules increasingly require bendable or hybrid substrates, and inspecting them demands purpose-built optical and X-ray configurations distinct from rigid-board lines. By 2034 Rigid PCB is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

| Offline/Standalone | $3.40B | 40% | $8B | 34%-6 | 10% |
In-line systems lead because high-volume manufacturers integrate inspection directly into the production line to catch defects without breaking throughput. In-line is also the fastest-growing deployment model as manufacturers replace standalone benches with connected systems that feed data directly into line-control software. Offline systems persist in smaller shops and rework stations. In-line remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

Regional revenue of USD 4.93 billion in 2025 and USD 14.12 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
The type pattern in China is the global one: 52.47% of 2025 revenue in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), 47.98% by 2034, against 14.18% growth in Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) taking it from 16.82% to 20.02%. Its 50.1% weight in Asia Pacific means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Revenue by type for China is reported separately in the full report.
Printed circuit board inspection systems sold into China fall under the compulsory certification scheme administered by the Certification and Accreditation Administration, commonly referenced as CCC, which covers the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility of industrial electronic equipment before it can be legally sold or installed in a factory setting. A supplier must have the equipment tested and certified through an accredited body, apply the CCC mark to the unit, and maintain factory inspection records that the certifying body can audit periodically. Equipment used in electronics manufacturing also falls within the ambit of workplace safety rules enforced by the Ministry of Emergency Management, which expects machinery to meet national safety standards for moving parts, lasers where optical scanning is used, and electrical enclosures. Import documentation must show conformity before customs clearance is granted.
Gardien, Manncorp, Nordson, OMRON, Vision Engineering, Bruker, Glenbrook Technologies, HB Technology, KohYoung Technology and Mirtec. are the suppliers covered in China. Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), at 52.47% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI), growing at 14.18%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. North America Market Analysis
The 2nd-largest region covered — 1 point of share move elsewhere by 2034, while revenue still grows 2.6×.
- Rank 2 of 5
- 2025 share 18%
- By 2034 17%
- Revenue $1.53B → $4B
In North America, 18% of global revenue puts 2025 at USD 1.53 billion on the way to USD 4 billion by 2034. That makes it the second-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
By 2034 the share stands at 17%, while nothing contracts here; other regions simply grow faster, which shows up as relative weight, not as falling revenue.
Within the region the type split tracks the global one; 52.47% of 2025 revenue in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), fastest growth of 14.18% in Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI). Per-axis and per-country detail for North America sits in the full report.

- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 81.7%
- Of global 14.7%
- Revenue $1.25B → $3.20B
The United States is the largest market within North America, generating USD 1.25 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 3.2 billion by 2034. Carrying 81.7% of the region in the base year, it sets North America's direction instead of merely contributing to it. Against regional totals of USD 1.53 billion in 2025 and USD 4 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
the United States buys along the same lines as the market globally; Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) first at 52.47% of 2025 revenue and 47.98% in 2034, Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) fastest at 14.18% on a share moving from 16.82% to 20.02%. Because the country carries 81.7% of North America, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Revenue by type for the United States is reported separately in the full report.
Inspection equipment for printed circuit boards is not subject to a dedicated product approval process in the United States; instead it is governed by workplace and electrical safety law. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that such equipment, once installed on a factory floor, meet general machine-guarding and electrical safety duties under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, and manufacturers commonly demonstrate this through independent listing to Underwriters Laboratories safety standards for industrial and test equipment. Where the system incorporates a laser for optical inspection, the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Devices and Radiological Health imposes performance and labelling requirements under federal laser product regulations. Equipment emitting radio-frequency energy during operation must also meet Federal Communications Commission rules on unintentional radiators before sale.
The suppliers tracked in this study (Gardien, Manncorp, Nordson, OMRON, Vision Engineering, Bruker, Glenbrook Technologies, HB Technology, KohYoung Technology and Mirtec.) compete in the United States across the type lines above. Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), at 52.47% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI), growing at 14.18%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. A supplier weighted toward North America is competing over a base of USD 1.53 billion in 2025 reaching USD 4 billion by 2034, 18% of global revenue at the start of that period.
Canada

- Revenue $0.53B → $1.32B
USD 0.53 billion of Europe's 2025 revenue is generated in Germany, the region's largest market, reaching USD 1.32 billion by 2034. 41.73% of the region in the base year makes it the largest market here without making it the region. Regional revenue of USD 1.27 billion in 2025 and USD 3.29 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) at 52.47% of 2025 revenue, easing to 47.98% by 2034, and the fastest is Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) at 14.18%, from 16.82% to 20.02%. Its 41.73% weight in Europe means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. The full report reports Germany by type separately.
As a piece of industrial machinery placed on the German market, PCB inspection equipment must satisfy the European Union's Machinery Regulation, which requires a conformity assessment, a technical file, and CE marking before the equipment can be sold or put into service. Where the system includes electronic control circuitry, it must additionally meet the Low Voltage Directive and the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive, both harmonised through European standards that a manufacturer or importer must self-declare or, in higher-risk configurations, have assessed by a notified body. National enforcement sits with the German market surveillance authorities under the Product Safety Act, which can withdraw non-conforming equipment from sale. A CE declaration of conformity and instructions in German must accompany every unit supplied.
Competition in Germany runs between the suppliers this study tracks: Gardien, Manncorp, Nordson, OMRON, Vision Engineering, Bruker, Glenbrook Technologies, HB Technology, KohYoung Technology and Mirtec.. The commercially relevant division is 52.47% of 2025 revenue in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), where the volume is, against 14.18% growth in Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI), where share moves. The commercial size of that position is USD 1.27 billion in 2025 and USD 3.29 billion by 2034, 14.94% of the global total in the base year.

Mexico is the largest market within Latin America, generating USD 0.24 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 0.65 billion by 2034. Its 55.81% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Latin America is not a proxy for it. Against regional totals of USD 0.43 billion in 2025 and USD 1.18 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
Demand in Mexico follows the type mix reported at global level: Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) is the largest line at 52.47% of 2025 revenue, moving to 47.98% by 2034, while Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) grows fastest at 14.18% and takes its share from 16.82% to 20.02%. With 55.81% of Latin America concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. Revenue by type for Mexico is reported separately in the full report.
Electronic test and inspection equipment sold in Mexico must comply with the official Mexican standards, known as Normas Oficiales Mexicanas, that the Secretariat of Economy enforces for electrical safety of industrial equipment, together with electromagnetic compatibility requirements overseen by the Federal Telecommunications Institute where the equipment emits radio-frequency signals. Conformity is typically demonstrated through testing by an accredited laboratory and certification that allows the supplier to affix the required compliance mark before customs release or domestic sale. Equipment integrated into a manufacturing line also falls under workplace safety obligations administered by the Secretariat of Labour and Social Welfare, which expects machine guarding and electrical hazard controls consistent with the applicable Mexican safety standard. Spanish-language labelling and user documentation are required for commercial supply.
The suppliers tracked in this study (Gardien, Manncorp, Nordson, OMRON, Vision Engineering, Bruker, Glenbrook Technologies, HB Technology, KohYoung Technology and Mirtec.) compete in Mexico across the type lines above. Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI), at 52.47% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI), growing at 14.18%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. Weighting toward Latin America means competing for 5.06% of 2025 global revenue, a base of USD 0.43 billion moving to USD 1.18 billion across the forecast period.

Demand in Israel follows the type mix reported at global level: Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) is the largest line at 52.47% of 2025 revenue, moving to 47.98% by 2034, while Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) grows fastest at 14.18% and takes its share from 16.82% to 20.02%. Its 44.12% weight in Middle East and Africa means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Israel carries its own type breakdown in the full report.
Industrial electronic equipment such as PCB inspection systems is regulated in Israel principally through the Standards Institution of Israel, which sets and enforces mandatory standards for electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility that imported and domestically supplied equipment must meet before sale. A supplier generally obtains a certificate of conformity or type approval from the Institution, or relies on recognised international test reports accepted under its equivalence arrangements, before the equipment can be marketed. Where the system uses a laser for optical scanning, the Ministry of Labour's occupational safety directorate applies workplace exposure and machine safety requirements consistent with recognised international laser safety practice. Importers must retain technical documentation demonstrating conformity for inspection by customs and market surveillance authorities.
Competition in Israel runs between the suppliers this study tracks: Gardien, Manncorp, Nordson, OMRON, Vision Engineering, Bruker, Glenbrook Technologies, HB Technology, KohYoung Technology and Mirtec.. Volume sits in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI) at 52.47% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI) at 14.18% growth. A supplier weighted toward Middle East and Africa is competing over a base of USD 0.34 billion in 2025 reaching USD 0.94 billion by 2034, 4% of global revenue at the start of that period.

Competitive Landscape
Position on the Type Axis Decides Competitive Standing
The field covered here is Gardien, Manncorp, Nordson, OMRON, Vision Engineering, Bruker, Glenbrook Technologies, HB Technology, KohYoung Technology and Mirtec..
Where suppliers actually compete is along the type axis. The largest block of revenue is Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI): USD 4.46 billion in 2025 at 52.47% of the total, 47.98% in 2034. Incumbency there is expensive to challenge. Movement is concentrated in Automated Solder Paste Inspection (SPI); 14.18% growth, against 10.8% at the other end of the axis in Automatic Optical Inspection (AOI). Holding the first and taking the second are separate capabilities, which is why a market of USD 8.5 billion supports as many suppliers as it does.
What separates suppliers is optical and X-ray imaging resolution paired with defect-detection algorithm accuracy, breadth of inspection portfolio spanning automated optical, X-ray and solder-paste systems so a single vendor can outfit a full line, regional service and applications-engineering presence near customer fabs, integration compatibility with existing surface-mount line control software, and price positioning across mid-tier and premium configurations. Established suppliers with broad AOI, AXI and SPI portfolios and dense Asia Pacific service networks hold an edge with large multinational manufacturers consolidating vendors. Smaller and regional suppliers compete on price, faster on-site support for local fabs, and configurations built for lower-volume or prototyping lines instead of full portfolio breadth.
Geographic reach is the other axis of competition. Asia Pacific alone accounts for 58% of 2025 revenue, so a supplier absent there is absent from the largest part of the market whatever its position elsewhere; North America adds a further 18%.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The market is built upward from unit shipments of automated optical, automated X-ray and automated solder-paste inspection systems across major printed circuit board and electronics manufacturing services regions, multiplied by average realized system prices by type, resolution class and line-integration configuration, then aggregated by application and geography. That bottom-up build is checked against disclosed inspection and test equipment revenue lines reported by Nordson, OMRON and KOH Young Technology, three of the sizing's named anchor companies. Where the unit-times-price build diverged from a company's disclosed segment revenue, the underlying volume or price assumption was corrected to close the gap; the disclosed figure was never averaged into the total as a second estimate.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary interviews target commercial and procurement managers at electronics manufacturing services and printed circuit board fabrication sites, quality and process engineering leads responsible for defect-rate targets, and equipment distributors or applications engineers who sit between suppliers and line operators. Sampling weights East Asia, particularly China, Taiwan and South Korea, given the concentration of surface-mount production capacity there, while also covering North America and Europe for automotive and industrial electronics buyers whose inspection requirements differ from high-volume consumer lines. Regulatory contacts are included where automotive or medical-adjacent electronics buyers apply their own qualification standards to inspection equipment choices.
Desk research draws on customs and trade classifications covering optical measuring and inspection instruments and X-ray equipment, published capacity and shipment benchmarks from IPC, the electronics industry association that tracks printed circuit board and assembly equipment trends, and public financial filings from named equipment suppliers including Nordson and OMRON, which report inspection and test equipment as a distinct segment. Regional electronics manufacturing association output, including Taiwan and South Korea trade body shipment data, supplements coverage of Asia Pacific supply concentration where individual company filings are less granular.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from expected surface-mount production capacity additions in Asia Pacific, rising board complexity measured in layer count and component density, and the pace at which automotive and telecom electronics content grows relative to consumer electronics. Pricing assumptions hold average selling prices for automated optical inspection flat while allowing X-ray and solder-paste system prices to decline modestly as adoption broadens beyond premium buyers. The build normalizes for a 2022-2023 capacity-driven purchasing spike tied to the post-shortage semiconductor and electronics capex cycle, treating it as pulled-forward demand rather than a new baseline. For the forecast to hold, automotive electronics content and Asia Pacific capacity expansion both need to continue at their current pace.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Outputs were back-tested against recorded 2020-2024 equipment shipment growth across the named supplier base to confirm the historical build tracks actual market movement rather than a smoothed trend line. Segment share shifts, including the migration of demand from automated optical toward automated X-ray and solder-paste inspection, were reviewed against industry capacity and shipment benchmarks without assuming the shift continues linearly. Two sensitivities were tested: a slower automotive electronics adoption case and a delayed Asia Pacific capacity-expansion case, both checked against how far each would need to shift before the segment ranking itself would change.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmest for the type and application splits, where public segment disclosures from named suppliers and industry shipment data give a direct anchor. It is softer for the offering, PCB-type and deployment splits, where reporting is thinner and the estimate leans more on trade-association benchmarks and adjacent-market analogues than on direct disclosure. The structural risks most likely to force a revision are a slower-than-expected rise in automotive electronics content and a pause in Asia Pacific capacity expansion; either would shift both the growth rate and the segment mix this forecast assumes.
