Market Analysis & Outlook
Mulching materials are organic products such as bark, wood chips, straw, pine needles, grass clippings and shredded leaves, and manufactured products such as plastic film, woven or non-woven landscape fabric, and stone or gravel, applied over soil to suppress weeds, retain moisture and moderate soil temperature. Buyers range from commercial and smallholder farm operations covering row crops with film, to landscaping and horticulture contractors installing bark and fabric on commercial and residential sites, to retail garden centers supplying home gardeners with bagged mulch.
The global mulching materials market stood at USD 4.68 billion in 2025. A forecast-period rate of 6.1% takes it to USD 7.95 billion by 2034, and the study reports every year in between, passing USD 3.55 billion in 2020, USD 4.42 billion in 2024, USD 4.95 billion in 2026 and USD 6.25 billion in 2030.
The product type mix shifts over the period. Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch is the largest line in 2025 at USD 1.54 billion, a 32.91% share, moving to USD 2.45 billion and 30.82% by 2034. Black Plastic Mulch grows fastest at 7.4%, taking its share from 23.5% to 26.04%, while Shredded Leaves grows slowest at 3.66%. Share moves toward Straw, Black Plastic Mulch, Landscape Fabric and Stone/Gravel Mulch and away from Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, Pine Needles, Grass Clippings and Shredded Leaves, though no line shrinks in revenue terms.
Cut by type, the largest line is Black: 45.09% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 2.11 billion, and 42.01% at USD 3.34 billion by 2034. Degradable grows faster at 10.98% against 5.24%, moving from 11.97% of revenue to 17.99% by 2034. Both this axis and the product type one divide the same revenue, which is why they are alternative views, not components.
USD 1.76 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in North America, 37.6% of the global total and the largest regional share; it reaches USD 2.78 billion by 2034. Asia Pacific is next at 27.1% and USD 1.27 billion, and Middle East and Africa last at 5%. Share shifts toward Asia Pacific and Latin America over the forecast period, so the regional split repays a close reading.
The 2025 total is arrived at by triangulating published aggregates against category proxies, not by an independent count. Segment, regional and country splits are estimated on the same basis, which bounds the precision of the figures above. Coverage runs to five regions, eight product type lines and five segmentation axes across a fifteen-year window.

Key Takeaways
- Revenue grows from USD 4.68 billion in 2025 to USD 7.95 billion in 2034, a compound annual rate of 6.1%, having reached USD 4.42 billion in 2024 from USD 3.55 billion in 2020.
- Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch is the largest product type line at USD 1.54 billion in 2025, a 32.91% share, reaching USD 2.45 billion and 30.82% of revenue by 2034.
- At 7.4%, Black Plastic Mulch grows faster than any other product type line, moving from USD 1.1 billion and 23.5% of revenue in 2025 to USD 2.07 billion and 26.04% in 2034.
- The bull case puts 2034 revenue at USD 8.98 billion and the bear case at USD 7.02 billion, either side of the USD 7.95 billion base case, each with its own stated assumption in the full report.
- North America holds 37.6% of global revenue in 2025 at USD 1.76 billion, the largest of the five regions tracked, and reaches USD 2.78 billion by 2034.
- 85.2% of North America's base-year revenue comes from the United States alone: USD 1.5 billion in 2025, rising to USD 2.36 billion by 2034, which is why it is that region's worked example.
- Every line on all five segmentation axes and in each of the five regions carries its own revenue, share and growth rate for all fifteen years, 2020 through 2034, on a 2025 base.
Market Trends
Revenue Share, By By Product Type
Base year 2025Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch leads with 32.9% of by product type segment revenue.
Share of by product type segment revenue, most recent base year. The 2 smallest segments are grouped as Other.
Three things move over 2026-2034, and they are worth separating: the product type mix, the regional balance, and the 6.1% compounding underneath both.
Not one of them points downward. Growth is everywhere in absolute terms, and the interest is entirely in where it lands.
The product type mix tilts toward Black Plastic Mulch. 7.4% against 3.66%: that gap, between Black Plastic Mulch and Shredded Leaves, is the largest on the product type axis. By 2034 the two sit at 26.04% and 3.02% of revenue, against 23.5% and 3.63% in 2025. The revenue figures behind that are USD 1.1 billion to USD 2.07 billion and USD 0.17 billion to USD 0.24 billion. Both expand; where a supplier sits on the axis still decides whether it tracks the market.
Growth concentrates in Asia Pacific and Latin America. Asia Pacific moves from 27.1% of revenue in 2025 to 31% in 2034, worth USD 1.27 billion rising to USD 2.46 billion; Latin America moves from 8.4% of revenue in 2025 to 9% in 2034, worth USD 0.39 billion rising to USD 0.72 billion. The offsetting side is North America at 37.6% moving to 35%, Europe at 21.9% moving to 20%, Middle East and Africa at 5% moving to 5%, none of which contracts. Growth is therefore not something a participant inherits from the market; it depends on which regions its revenue is weighted toward.
The series never breaks trajectory. Year by year the total runs USD 3.55 billion in 2020, USD 4.42 billion in 2024, USD 4.68 billion in 2025, USD 4.95 billion in 2026, USD 6.25 billion in 2030 and USD 7.95 billion in 2034. No year breaks the trajectory, and the 6.1% forecast rate compares with 5.68% recorded over 2020-2025, a continuation, not an inflection. A plan built on this market is therefore a plan about capturing a share of steady expansion, which is decided on the product type and regional axes, not by the headline rate.
Market Growth Factors
Black Plastic Mulch adds the most incremental growth
Market Drivers
3- 01Black Plastic Mulch adds the most incremental growth
At 7.4% against a market rate of 6.1%, Black Plastic Mulch is the line pulling the average up: USD 1.1 billion to USD 2.07 billion, and 23.5% of revenue to 26.04%. Nothing else on the axis grows as fast (Shredded Leaves manages 3.66%) so the blended 6.1% is carried by this one line instead of shared across them. That makes position on the product type axis a growth decision, not a product one.
- 02Regional weight, not regional count
The largest regional base is North America: USD 1.76 billion in 2025 at 37.6% of the global total, USD 2.78 billion by 2034, still 35%. Behind it, Asia Pacific holds 27.1%; USD 1.27 billion rising to USD 2.46 billion. Most of the base and most of the growth sit in those two, and a plan spread evenly across regions therefore over-invests outside them.
- 03A demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround
Revenue rose through USD 3.55 billion in 2020, USD 4.42 billion in 2024 and USD 4.68 billion in 2025, a compound 5.68% across the historical period. From there the forecast carries 6.1% through to USD 7.95 billion in 2034. Because the growth is already in the record and not only in the projection, the rate is held flat across the forecast instead of ramped, and the risk in the number sits in the mix assumptions, not in whether the market grows at all.

| 3 | Competition from reusable and alternative weed-control methods in horticulture | Low | −0.13 | Low | Low | Low |
| Total | −0.78 | |||||
Drivers contribute 4.05 Billion and restraints remove 0.78 Billion, a net 3.27 Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Separate the 6.1% into its parts and three show up: an already-large base compounding, the product type mix moving toward its faster lines, and regional growth landing unevenly.
Restraining Factors
Downside case: USD 7.02 billion by 2034, against USD 7.95 billion in the base case
Market Restraints
2- 01Downside case: USD 7.02 billion by 2034, against USD 7.95 billion in the base case
Where the forecast could miss: bear case assumes a slower pace of single-use-plastic regulation, prolonged feedstock and freight cost pressure that delays capacity additions, and a plateau in North American landscaping demand. That path reaches USD 7.02 billion by 2034 instead of USD 7.95 billion, off an unchanged USD 4.68 billion in 2025.
- 02Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch grows below the market rate
Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch carries 32.91% of 2025 revenue at USD 1.54 billion but compounds at 5.47% against 6.1% for the market, taking its share to 30.82% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 2.45 billion. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
Upside case: USD 8.98 billion by 2034
Market Opportunities
2- 01Upside case: USD 8.98 billion by 2034
Bull case assumes accelerated biodegradable-film adoption and continued expansion of protected horticulture and row-crop plasticulture acreage across Asia Pacific and Latin America, sustaining a wider price realization for certified compostable film through the forecast period. On that assumption the market reaches USD 8.98 billion by 2034 against USD 7.95 billion in the base case, from the same USD 4.68 billion in 2025.
- 02The opening is on the product type axis, not the regional one
Black Plastic Mulch grows at 7.4% against 6.1% for the market, adding revenue from USD 1.1 billion in 2025 to USD 2.07 billion in 2034 and taking its share from 23.5% to 26.04%. It is the place on this axis where share changes hands at scale, so it is where an entrant can take position without displacing the incumbent in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch.
Market Challenges
Concentration on the product type axis
Market Challenges
2- 01Concentration on the product type axis
One line dominates: Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, at 32.91% of revenue in 2025 and 30.82% in 2034, worth USD 1.54 billion and USD 2.45 billion. That concentration means the market's own forecast is, to a large extent, a forecast for one product type line.
- 02The United States is 85.2% of North America
85.2% of the leading region is one country: the United States, at USD 1.5 billion against North America's USD 1.76 billion in 2025, and USD 2.36 billion by 2034. Read as a region it looks diversified; read by weight it is not, and the regional forecast inherits whatever happens in that one market.
Segmentation Analysis

Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch Held the Dominant Share of the Product type Segment in 2025 Barked, shredded and chipped mulch leads because established supply chains for sawmill and land-clearing residue keep it the lowest-cost, most widely available material across landscaping and garden retail channels. Black plastic mulch grows fastest as row-crop growers in expanding agricultural regions adopt plastic-covered cultivation for weed suppression and soil-moisture retention at scale. Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order. This is the axis the estimation prices in full, year by year, and the one the regional chapters cut against.

Black film leads because its opacity delivers the strongest weed suppression and heat retention at the lowest per-roll cost, keeping it the default choice for large-acreage growers. Degradable film grows fastest as tightening restrictions on non-degradable plastic in parts of Europe and Asia push growers and landscapers toward compostable alternatives that avoid end-of-season removal. By 2034 Black is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

Horticulture leads because landscaping, nursery and residential gardening projects apply mulch far more frequently than field crops and draw on an established base of garden-center and contractor demand. Agriculture grows fastest as plasticulture adoption expands across large-acreage row-crop regions seeking consistent weed control and moisture retention over wider planted areas. The order does not change: Horticulture is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

Scale in Polyethylene (PE) and Growth in Polylactic Acid (PLA) / Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) Define the Element Axis Polyethylene leads because its extrusion infrastructure is the most established and its per-unit cost remains the lowest among mulch film polymers, keeping it the default specification for large-scale growers. Polylactic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoate blends grow fastest as compostability requirements and grower interest in removal-free end-of-season disposal favor certified bio-based film over conventional plastic. The order does not change: Polyethylene (PE) is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

- Revenue $1.76B → $2.78B
In North America, 37.6% of global revenue puts 2025 at USD 1.76 billion rising to USD 2.78 billion in 2034. By revenue it sits first across the study, and the ranking does not change between 2025 and 2034.
By 2034 the share stands at 35%, a shift in share, not in direction: revenue climbs every year while the market's centre of gravity moves elsewhere.
Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch leads here as it does globally, at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, and Black Plastic Mulch again grows fastest at 7.4%. Per-axis and per-country detail for North America sits in the full report.

- Revenue $1.50B → $2.36B
The United States is the largest market within North America, generating USD 1.5 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 2.36 billion by 2034. At 85.2% of regional revenue in the base year it is not one market among several, the region's trajectory is largely this country's trajectory. Regional revenue of USD 1.76 billion in 2025 and USD 2.78 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, easing to 30.82% by 2034, and the fastest is Black Plastic Mulch at 7.4%, from 23.5% to 26.04%. With 85.2% of North America concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. The United States carries its own product type breakdown in the full report.
Mulch sold in the United States sits across several regulatory lines rather than one. Where a supplier labels a product organic, the USDA National Organic Program governs which feedstocks and additives qualify. State departments of agriculture typically set compost quality rules covering pathogen reduction, weed-seed content and contaminant limits for wood- and yard-waste-derived mulch. Plastic mulch film is treated as an agricultural input subject to state pesticide and solid-waste handling rules when treated or disposed of after use. Any claim that a mulch or film is biodegradable or compostable falls under the Federal Trade Commission's Green Guides, which require that such claims be substantiated and not mislead buyers about how the material actually breaks down.
Competition in the United States runs between the suppliers this study tracks: FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Jolly Gardener, Novamont S.p.A, Ohio Mulch, Preen, The Scotts Company LLC, The Mulch Center, Renewable Fiber, Lafayette Materials, Good Earth Garden Market, Cowart Mulch Products, Bailey Bark Materials, Alpine Materials and Agriplast Tech India. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, and taking Black Plastic Mulch while it grows at 7.4%. The full report covers country-level positioning and shares company by company; this summary does not.

Germany is the largest market within Europe, generating USD 0.31 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 0.48 billion by 2034. Its 30.1% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Europe is not a proxy for it. The region itself runs USD 1.03 billion to USD 1.59 billion over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Demand in Germany follows the product type mix reported at global level: Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch is the largest line at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, moving to 30.82% by 2034, while Black Plastic Mulch grows fastest at 7.4% and takes its share from 23.5% to 26.04%. With 30.1% of Europe concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. The full report reports Germany by product type separately.
Mulch products placed on the German market fall within the EU framework for soil improvers and growing media, and a supplier marketing a CE-marked fertilising product must meet the compositional and labelling conditions set out in the EU Fertilising Products Regulation. Mulch derived from biowaste compost is additionally governed by Germany's Biowaste Ordinance, which sets requirements for treatment and permissible input material. Plastic mulch films are subject to REACH restrictions on chemical additives, and a film marketed as biodegradable is expected to conform to the relevant European standard for biodegradable mulch films rather than rely on an unverified claim. Packaging and labelling must state composition and intended use clearly enough for a buyer to judge suitability.
The suppliers tracked in this study (FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Jolly Gardener, Novamont S.p.A, Ohio Mulch, Preen, The Scotts Company LLC, The Mulch Center, Renewable Fiber, Lafayette Materials, Good Earth Garden Market, Cowart Mulch Products, Bailey Bark Materials, Alpine Materials and Agriplast Tech India) compete in Germany across the product type lines above. The commercially relevant division is 32.91% of 2025 revenue in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, where the volume is, against 7.4% growth in Black Plastic Mulch, where share moves. A supplier weighted toward Europe is competing over a base of USD 1.03 billion in 2025 reaching USD 1.59 billion by 2034, 21.9% of global revenue at the start of that period.

Asia Pacific Market Analysis
The 2nd-largest region covered, and the one gaining the most — it picks up 3.8 points of share by 2034, while revenue still grows 1.9×.
- Rank 2 of 5
- 2025 share 27.1%
- By 2034 30.9%
- Revenue $1.27B → $2.46B
27.1% of the global mulching materials market sits in Asia Pacific in 2025, worth USD 1.27 billion on the way to USD 2.46 billion by 2034. That makes it the second-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
Share climbs to 31% by 2034, so the region grows faster than the market's 6.1% and takes a larger part of the revenue added by 2034 than its 2025 weight implies.
Segment composition follows the global pattern: Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch largest at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, Black Plastic Mulch fastest at 7.4%. The full report breaks Asia Pacific out along every axis and by country.
China
The largest market in Asia Pacific, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 44.9%
- Of global 12.2%
- Revenue $0.57B → $1.11B
The largest single market in Asia Pacific is China, at USD 0.57 billion in 2025 and USD 1.11 billion in 2034. Its 44.9% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Asia Pacific is not a proxy for it. The region itself runs USD 1.27 billion to USD 2.46 billion over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
The product type pattern in China is the global one: 32.91% of 2025 revenue in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, 30.82% by 2034, against 7.4% growth in Black Plastic Mulch taking it from 23.5% to 26.04%. With 44.9% of Asia Pacific concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. Revenue by product type for China is reported separately in the full report.
Agricultural mulch materials in China are overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, which sets registration and quality expectations for inputs used in crop production. Plastic mulch film is subject to a national product standard covering thickness and mechanical properties, administered through the State Administration for Market Regulation's quality supervision system, and a supplier must demonstrate conformity before sale. Because residual film left in soil is a recognised concern, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment has pushed adoption of degradable film meeting a dedicated national standard, and several provinces now restrict the sale of film that falls short of the minimum thickness rule. Organic or compost-based mulch marketed for use in certified organic production must also meet the separate national organic standard.
In China the field is FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Jolly Gardener, Novamont S.p.A, Ohio Mulch, Preen, The Scotts Company LLC, The Mulch Center, Renewable Fiber, Lafayette Materials, Good Earth Garden Market, Cowart Mulch Products, Bailey Bark Materials, Alpine Materials and Agriplast Tech India. Volume sits in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch at 32.91% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Black Plastic Mulch at 7.4% growth. The commercial size of that position is USD 1.27 billion in 2025 and USD 2.46 billion by 2034, 27.1% of the global total in the base year.
India

6.84% of global revenue is generated in India; USD 0.32 billion in 2025, reaching USD 0.62 billion in 2034, and 25.2% of Asia Pacific.
Latin America Market Analysis
The 4th-largest region covered — it picks up 0.7 points of share by 2034, while revenue still grows 1.8×.
- Rank 4 of 5
- 2025 share 8.4%
- By 2034 9.1%
- Revenue $0.39B → $0.72B
8.4% of the global mulching materials market sits in Latin America in 2025, worth USD 0.39 billion on the way to USD 0.72 billion by 2034. By revenue it sits fourth across the study, and the ranking does not change between 2025 and 2034.
Share climbs to 9% by 2034, at a pace above the 6.1% global rate, so this region warrants separate treatment and should not be scaled off the total.
Segment composition follows the global pattern: Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch largest at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, Black Plastic Mulch fastest at 7.4%. Latin America is reported axis by axis and country by country in the full study.
Brazil
The largest market in Latin America, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 53.8%
- Of global 4.5%
- Revenue $0.21B → $0.40B
53.8% of Latin America's base-year revenue comes from Brazil; USD 0.21 billion, rising to USD 0.4 billion by 2034. Its 53.8% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Latin America is not a proxy for it. Against regional totals of USD 0.39 billion in 2025 and USD 0.72 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, easing to 30.82% by 2034, and the fastest is Black Plastic Mulch at 7.4%, from 23.5% to 26.04%. Since 53.8% of Latin America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. The full report reports Brazil by product type separately.
Brazil regulates mulch as an agricultural input through the Ministério da Agricultura, Pecuária e Abastecimento, which classifies soil amendments, organic fertilisers and similar products under its normative framework for registration and labelling before they can be legally sold. A supplier must register the product, declare its composition and origin, and label it in Portuguese with the intended use and any handling precautions. Where mulch is packaged in or supplied as plastic film, INMETRO's conformity assessment applies to the plastic product itself, covering material identification and basic performance claims. Municipal environmental licensing can also apply where mulch is produced from processed urban green waste, since the source material's handling is separately controlled.
In Brazil the field is FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Jolly Gardener, Novamont S.p.A, Ohio Mulch, Preen, The Scotts Company LLC, The Mulch Center, Renewable Fiber, Lafayette Materials, Good Earth Garden Market, Cowart Mulch Products, Bailey Bark Materials, Alpine Materials and Agriplast Tech India. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch at 32.91% of 2025 revenue, and taking Black Plastic Mulch while it grows at 7.4%. That makes Latin America a 8.4% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 0.39 billion rising to USD 0.72 billion, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.
Mexico
2nd-largest in Latin America, growing 1.8×.

2.56% of global revenue is generated in Mexico; USD 0.12 billion in 2025, reaching USD 0.22 billion in 2034, and 30.8% of Latin America.
Middle East and Africa Market Analysis
The 5th-largest region covered, holding its share flat through 2034, while revenue still grows 1.7×.
- Rank 5 of 5
- 2025 share 5%
- By 2034 5%
- Revenue $0.23B → $0.40B
USD 0.23 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in Middle East and Africa, 5% of the global mulching materials market and reaches USD 0.4 billion by 2034. Among the five regions it ranks fifth by revenue in both years.
By 2034 the share stands at 5%, a shift in share, not in direction: revenue climbs every year while the market's centre of gravity moves elsewhere.
The product type mix reported at global level applies here, with Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch the largest line at 32.91% of 2025 revenue and Black Plastic Mulch the fastest-growing at 7.4%. Revenue for Middle East and Africa is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
South Africa
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 1.8×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 34.8%
- Of global 1.7%
- Revenue $0.08B → $0.14B
South Africa is the largest market within Middle East and Africa, generating USD 0.08 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 0.14 billion by 2034. Its 34.8% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Middle East and Africa is not a proxy for it. Regional revenue of USD 0.23 billion in 2025 and USD 0.4 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
The product type pattern in South Africa is the global one: 32.91% of 2025 revenue in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, 30.82% by 2034, against 7.4% growth in Black Plastic Mulch taking it from 23.5% to 26.04%. Its 34.8% weight in Middle East and Africa means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. Per-product type revenue for South Africa appears on its own in the full report.
In South Africa, mulch marketed as a soil conditioner or organic fertiliser falls under the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act, administered by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, which requires registration of the product and accurate labelling of its composition and recommended use before sale. A supplier cannot make unregistered claims about a mulch product's effect on soil or plant growth. Plastic mulch film is assessed against South African Bureau of Standards specifications covering material quality and dimensions, and importers are expected to show the film meets these before distribution. Where mulch is produced from recycled organic waste, provincial environmental authorities may impose additional conditions on the source material's processing.
The suppliers tracked in this study (FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Jolly Gardener, Novamont S.p.A, Ohio Mulch, Preen, The Scotts Company LLC, The Mulch Center, Renewable Fiber, Lafayette Materials, Good Earth Garden Market, Cowart Mulch Products, Bailey Bark Materials, Alpine Materials and Agriplast Tech India) compete in South Africa across the product type lines above. The commercially relevant division is 32.91% of 2025 revenue in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, where the volume is, against 7.4% growth in Black Plastic Mulch, where share moves. The commercial size of that position is USD 0.23 billion in 2025 and USD 0.4 billion by 2034, 5% of the global total in the base year.

Report Coverage
This report assesses the market across every segment, with revenue and a growth rate for each line in each year of the study period. It covers the drivers, trends, opportunities, restraints and challenges shaping growth, the competitive landscape and the companies profiled, and the research methodology behind every estimate. Segmentation is reported by Product Type, Type, Application, Element, End User, and regional analysis covers North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, Middle East and Africa, each broken out by country.
Competitive Landscape
Suppliers Compete on Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch Volume and Black Plastic Mulch Momentum
The suppliers covered are: FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Jolly Gardener, Novamont S.p.A, Ohio Mulch, Preen, The Scotts Company LLC, The Mulch Center, Renewable Fiber, Lafayette Materials, Good Earth Garden Market, Cowart Mulch Products, Bailey Bark Materials, Alpine Materials and Agriplast Tech India.
Competition follows the product type split, not the regional one. Volume sits in Barked, Shredded, or Chipped Mulch, USD 1.54 billion and 32.91% of 2025 revenue, 30.82% by 2034, which is also where an incumbent is hardest to dislodge. Black Plastic Mulch, compounding at 7.4% against 3.66% for Shredded Leaves, is where share changes hands over the forecast period. A supplier positioned in one is not automatically positioned in the other, so a field of this size stays viable in a market of USD 4.68 billion.
Manufacturing and formulation scale sets the largest suppliers apart: bark and wood-chip processors with steady access to sawmill and land-clearing residue keep per-unit costs down, while film producers with in-house polymer formulation and compostability certification experience, such as bio-based film specialists, hold an edge as biodegradable requirements tighten. Retail shelf position and distribution reach through garden-center and big-box channels matter for branded lawn-and-garden suppliers. Smaller regional bark, fabric and stone suppliers compete on trucking radius, delivery reliability and price rather than brand recognition, serving landscaping contractors and garden centers within a limited geographic footprint.
The regional picture sets the entry cost: 37.6% of revenue is in North America and 27.1% in Asia Pacific, so a credible global position requires both, while Middle East and Africa at 5% can be served opportunistically.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
Sizing starts from the bottom up: organic mulch volumes are built from bark and wood-chip processing tonnage tied to sawmill and land-clearing residue supply, and film, fabric and stone volumes are built from extrusion, weaving and quarrying shipment data, each multiplied by realized per-unit prices observed across bagged retail, bulk landscape-supply and agricultural-film channels. That bottom-up build is then checked against disclosed revenue from named producers, including Scotts, Novamont and FKuR, and against regional trade-association shipment figures. Where the two diverge, the correction is made to the underlying bottom-up assumption, typically a per-cubic-yard bark price or a per-roll film price, rather than averaging the bottom-up and disclosed figures together.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary outreach targets procurement managers at large-scale farm cooperatives and greenhouse operators who set film and mulch specifications, purchasing leads at landscaping and garden-center distribution chains who set bark and fabric order volumes, product managers at film-extrusion and bark-processing companies who confirm realized pricing, and regulatory contacts tracking single-use plastic and compostability rules in jurisdictions considering restrictions. Sampling emphasizes North America and Europe, where the named suppliers concentrate and disclosure is most available, with supplementary contacts in China and India added given the scale of agricultural plasticulture volume in both countries and the comparatively thin public disclosure available from producers based there.
Desk research draws on USDA NASS acreage and plasticulture adoption data, Eurostat and European Bioplastics shipment statistics for compostable film, United States International Trade Commission trade data filed under the plastic-sheeting and film harmonized codes, EN 17033 and ASTM D6400 compostability certification registries for biodegradable film producers, and state agricultural-extension service reports documenting mulch adoption among row-crop growers. Company-level detail is cross-checked against the annual filings of the publicly disclosed producers named in the competitive set, where filings exist, and against regional landscape-supply trade association shipment summaries where they do not.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from acreage projected under protected and open-field plasticulture cultivation, the pace at which biodegradable film formulations replace conventional polyethylene as single-use plastic rules tighten across parts of Europe and Asia, realized price trends for bark and wood-residue feedstock tied to sawmill output, and a normalization for the freight and feedstock cost spikes recorded in the historical period so they are not carried forward as a permanent cost level. The forecast holds if acreage expansion in Asia Pacific and Latin America continues near its recent pace and if compostability policy is not reversed in the jurisdictions currently driving biodegradable-film adoption.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
The 2020 through 2024 build was back-tested against recorded historical growth in bark and mulch processing volumes and in film shipment data, and the resulting segment shifts, bark versus film, and black versus degradable film type, were reviewed against the disclosures of the named companies in the competitive set. The forecast was then sensitivity-tested against a slower biodegradable-adoption case, in which regulatory tightening is delayed, and a higher feedstock-and-freight-cost case, confirming that the base case sits between those two bounds rather than at either edge.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
The North America and Europe organic-mulch and branded-film segments are the firmest part of the estimate, anchored to volumes and pricing disclosed by named processors and film producers. Asia Pacific and Latin America agricultural film demand is triangulated from trade and acreage data rather than direct company disclosure, since most producers serving those regions are private. The pace of biodegradable-film adoption is the largest source of variance in the forecast: it depends on compostability policy timing in specific jurisdictions, not on demand, and a delay or reversal in that policy is what would force the sharpest revision.
