Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

This market was built upward from unit volumes and realized prices across the mini LED value chain: chip and driver IC shipments from major Asian LED foundries, the backlight module volumes those chips are assembled into for television, monitor, laptop and automotive display lines, and the average selling price per chip and per module drawn from component pricing trackers. The chip level build was checked against the mini LED and display related revenue that Samsung, LG Innotek, Seoul Semiconductor, AU Optronics, Innolux and BOE Technology Group disclose within their broader LED or display segments. Where the unit based build implied a segment share that looked too high, the attach rate assumption was corrected and the disclosed segment revenue was treated as correct.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Bottom-up sequence
1
Size the base
2
Apply take-up
3
Apply frequency
4
Apply realised price
Reconciliation sequence
1
Gather disclosed revenue
2
Strip out-of-scope lines
3
Compare against the build
4
Correct the assumption

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary interviews for this market focus on procurement and engineering roles at television, monitor, laptop and automotive display makers who select between mini LED, OLED and conventional LCD backlighting for upcoming product lines, since that decision determines chip and module demand years ahead of a product launch. Additional interviews target sales and product management staff at LED chip foundries and backlight module assemblers in Taiwan, South Korea, China and Japan, where mini LED production is concentrated, along with automotive lighting engineers evaluating mini LED for headlamp and cockpit display programs. Sampling weights toward these Asian manufacturing geographies while still covering North American and European buyers who set the specifications those suppliers build to.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research for this market draws on customs and trade classification data for LED chips and display modules under Harmonized System code 8541 headings, patent filings related to local dimming zone control assigned to major panel and driver IC makers, and the segment level disclosures that Samsung Electronics, LG Innotek, Seoul Semiconductor, AU Optronics, Innolux, BOE Technology Group and ams-OSRAM publish in their annual reports and investor presentations. Display industry trade association shipment data covering panel and backlight unit volumes by region supplements these company filings, and vehicle homologation filings referencing adaptive LED headlamp modules support the automotive lighting estimates.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from expected mini LED penetration curves within each end use: the share of new television models offered with mini LED backlighting each year, the pace at which laptop, tablet and monitor makers extend mini LED beyond flagship models, and the rate at which automotive programs move from concept to production for mini LED headlamps and cockpit displays. Pricing is assumed to keep declining as chip yields improve, and that decline is the main lever letting mini LED reach lower price tiers. The forecast also normalizes the artificially high growth of 2020 to 2022, when the technology was scaling off a very small base, so that later years reflect underlying demand rather than base effects.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were checked by back testing the same unit and pricing build against recorded mini LED shipment growth from 2020 through 2024, confirming that the historical curve produced by the model matches the pace of adoption already seen in television and laptop launches. Segment level shifts, such as the growing share held by laptop and monitor backlighting relative to television backlighting, were reviewed against product roadmaps published by major brands. Sensitivities were run on chip price decline rates and on automotive program timing, since those two assumptions move the forecast more than any other input, and the base case reflects the middle of the resulting range instead of either extreme.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest for television backlighting, where shipment volumes and price trends are visible across several years of product cycles from the largest panel makers. It is thinner for automotive adoption, since most programs are still moving from pilot to production and public disclosure of mini LED specific automotive revenue is limited. Estimates for driver IC and signage demand rest more on component level pricing than on direct company disclosure. A structural risk to this forecast is a faster than expected shift toward OLED in the television segment mini LED was built to compete against, which would compress the largest single line in this market.
