Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The market was built upward from methomyl production and formulation volumes by region, converted into revenue using realised prices for soluble liquid, wettable powder and bait formulations reported at the distributor and agri-dealer level. Volumes were derived from technical-grade output estimates, formulation conversion ratios, and crop-acreage-weighted application rates for the vegetable, fruit, field crop and cereal segments where methomyl is registered. This bottom-up build was then checked against disclosed agrochemical segment revenue from the technical and formulated-product manufacturers named in this report, and against publicly available agrochemical trade and customs data. Where the volume-and-price build diverged from disclosed revenue, the underlying application-rate or price assumption was revisited and corrected; the two figures were never simply averaged together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary outreach targeted commercial and technical roles at formulation and technical-grade manufacturers, procurement leads at agricultural distributors and agri-input dealers, and regulatory affairs contacts responsible for product registration renewals in major crop-producing geographies. Pest control operators and public health procurement contacts were included to capture demand outside crop agriculture. Sampling weighted Asia Pacific and Latin America, where acreage growth and generic manufacturing capacity are concentrated, alongside North America and Europe to capture the effect of tightening registration requirements on regional supply. Conversations focused on realised pricing, formulation mix shifts, channel margins and the pace of registration change, not on volume disclosures alone.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research drew on national and regional pesticide registration registers, including the US EPA's pesticide product label system and the European Union's pesticide database, both of which record active-ingredient approvals, restrictions and withdrawal dates relevant to methomyl. Customs and trade classification data under the relevant harmonized system code for carbamate insecticides was used to cross-check regional volume flows. Company-level filings and investor disclosures from the technical and formulated-product manufacturers named in this report supplied revenue and capacity context. Crop-acreage and agrochemical-use benchmarks published by national agriculture ministries in major producing countries supported the crop-type demand split.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected crop acreage growth in vegetables, fruits and field crops across Asia Pacific and Latin America, set against the pace of registration withdrawal in the European Union and select US states, which is treated as a structural reduction to addressable volume, not a temporary dip. Pricing is assumed to track input-cost inflation for technical-grade carbamate production and is not expected to expand materially in real terms. Growth in non-agricultural bait and public health applications is modeled separately from crop-protection demand, since the two respond to different drivers. The forecast holds if acreage expansion in emerging producing regions continues to outpace the rate of regulatory contraction in developed markets.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Forecast outputs were back-tested against recorded methomyl volume and price trends over the 2020-2024 historical period to confirm the model reproduces observed growth before being extended forward. Segment-level shifts, including the movement toward bait and powder formulations and the rising share of Asia Pacific and Latin America, were checked against crop-acreage and registration data, not accepted on trend alone. Sensitivities were tested against a faster pace of European Union and US regulatory withdrawal and against slower-than-assumed acreage growth in Asia Pacific; both were used to bound the bear and bull scenarios, and neither adjusted the base case.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmer for the soluble liquid and wettable powder formulation segments and for the Asia Pacific and Latin America regional splits, where crop-acreage and registration data are both current and granular. It is thinner for the non-agricultural and bait-application segment, where public health and pest control procurement is reported less consistently, and for country-level splits within the Middle East and Africa, where registration and trade data are sparser. A structural risk to this estimate is an acceleration in regulatory withdrawal beyond what is currently scheduled, which would compress the addressable base faster than acreage growth in emerging markets could offset.
