Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from flaxseed crush volumes and the oil extraction yield per tonne, converted into oil output by grade using expeller-press and solvent-extraction yield ratios published by oilseed processing associations, then priced using realised bulk oil transaction values for food grade, industrial grade and pharmaceutical grade material. Packaging-level pricing for bottled and capsule formats is layered on top of the bulk oil base using observed retail-to-bulk markups. This bottom-up build is then checked against disclosed revenue and shipment volumes reported by major crushers and branded oil suppliers; where the two diverge, the correction is made to the underlying yield or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build, not by averaging the two figures together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target procurement managers at edible oil processors and paint and coatings manufacturers, category buyers at supplement and personal care brands, and regulatory affairs staff who track food grade and pharmaceutical grade approvals in each market. Channel contacts include distributors who move bulk flaxseed oil between crushers and downstream formulators, since pricing at that step is rarely published. Sampling emphasises North America and Europe, where flax cultivation and crushing capacity are concentrated, alongside Asia Pacific contacts covering the fastest growing demand base in nutraceuticals and food applications. Latin American sampling focuses on Argentina, given its position as a flaxseed growing region feeding both domestic processing and export.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on crop production and trade statistics for flaxseed from national agriculture ministries and the Food and Agriculture Organization, customs trade data filed under the relevant flaxseed and linseed oil harmonised system codes, and food grade and industrial grade specification registers maintained by national food safety authorities. Company filings and investor disclosures from publicly listed oilseed processors provide revenue and volume cross-checks, and trade association benchmarks from oilseed crushing and paint and coatings industry bodies inform yield and application-mix assumptions. Where a market lacks a dedicated flaxseed trade code, disclosures are triangulated against adjacent vegetable oil trade categories.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from expected growth in flax cultivation area and crush capacity, projected consumption growth in nutraceutical and food applications driven by demand for plant-based omega-3 sources, and steadier industrial demand tied to coatings and construction activity. Grade mix is projected to shift toward pharmaceutical and nutraceutical grade material as that application grows faster than industrial use, while pricing assumptions hold real bulk oil prices broadly flat and let volume carry most of the growth. The approach normalises for the seed price volatility seen in recent harvest years, treating it as a recurring feature of a thinly traded commodity, not a structural break. Flax planting area keeping pace with nutraceutical and food demand growth is the condition the forecast rests on.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded flaxseed crush volume and trade growth over the 2020 to 2024 period to confirm the historical series moves in line with observed production and export trends. Segment shift assumptions, particularly the move toward pharmaceutical and nutraceutical grade material, are reviewed against category growth already visible in dietary supplement retail data. Sensitivities are tested on the two inputs the forecast depends on most: flaxseed planting area and real bulk oil pricing, to see how much the 2034 total moves if either holds flat instead of following the assumed path. Regional splits are checked against each region's own reported crush capacity and consumption trend to catch a share that has drifted away from what the underlying production base supports.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmer for the food grade and industrial grade segments, where crush volume, trade data and industrial application patterns are well documented across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. It is thinner for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical grade split and for personal care applications, where product-level disclosure is limited and the estimate relies more heavily on retail category growth as a proxy. Regional detail for the Middle East and Africa and parts of Latin America carries wider uncertainty given sparser trade reporting. A structural risk worth flagging is a sustained shift in edible oil substitution that would move demand away from flaxseed oil faster than the current forecast assumes.
