Market Analysis & Outlook
Krill meal is a protein and lipid-rich ingredient produced by processing and drying Antarctic krill, a small crustacean harvested from the Southern Ocean, into a granular or powdered form used primarily as a feed additive. It is purchased mainly by aquaculture feed formulators for salmon and shrimp diets, and by pet food and nutraceutical manufacturers seeking a marine-derived source of protein, phospholipids and omega-3 fatty acids. Buyers range from large integrated feed producers procuring bulk volumes to smaller supplement and premium pet food brands sourcing refined, higher-purity grades.
Between 2025 and 2034 the global krill meal market moves from USD 350 million to USD 766.3 million, compounding at 9.2% a year. Fifteen years are covered in all, taking in USD 243.8 million in 2020, USD 325.6 million in 2024, USD 379 million in 2026 and USD 538.9 million in 2030.
The type mix shifts over the period. Feed Grade Krill Meal is the largest line in 2025 at USD 283.5 million, a 81% share, moving to USD 582.4 million and 76% by 2034. Food Grade Krill Meal grows fastest at 12%, taking its share from 19% to 24%, while Feed Grade Krill Meal grows slowest at 8.4%. Share moves toward Food Grade Krill Meal and away from Feed Grade Krill Meal, though no line shrinks in revenue terms.
The application split puts Supermarkets/Hypermarkets first, at USD 147 million and 42% of revenue in 2025, rising to USD 260.5 million and 34% in 2034. Online Stores grows faster at 12.2% against 6.6%, moving from 28% of revenue to 36% by 2034. It cuts the same total as the type axis from a different commercial angle, so revenue does not add across the two.
The regional order runs from Europe at 34% of 2025 revenue down to Middle East and Africa at 6%. Europe is worth USD 119 million in 2025 and USD 230 million in 2034; Asia Pacific, second at 32%, moves from USD 112 million to USD 275.9 million. Asia Pacific and Latin America gain share across the period, so growth is not distributed evenly between regions.
The 2025 total is arrived at by triangulating published aggregates against category proxies, not by an independent count. Segment, regional and country splits are estimated on the same basis, which bounds the precision of the figures above. Coverage runs to five regions, two type lines and five segmentation axes across a fifteen-year window.

Market Trends
Revenue Share, By by type
Base year 2025Feed Grade Krill Meal leads with 81.0% of by type segment revenue.
Share of by type segment revenue, most recent base year.
The global krill meal market is shaped over 2026-2034 by three measurable movements: a change in the type mix, a shift in where revenue sits geographically, and the 9.2% rate carrying the total.
All three are changes in mix, not in direction: nothing contracts, and the movement is in which lines and regions absorb the new revenue.
Composition shifts on the type axis. The widest spread on the type axis is between Food Grade Krill Meal at 12% and Feed Grade Krill Meal at 8.4%. Over the forecast period that moves Food Grade Krill Meal from 19% of revenue to 24%, and Feed Grade Krill Meal from 81% to 76%. Revenue rises on both sides; USD 66.5 million to USD 183.9 million and USD 283.5 million to USD 582.4 million respectively, so this is a change in composition, not a contraction, and one forecast window is long enough for it to matter.
Asia Pacific and Latin America gain regional share. Asia Pacific moves from 32% of revenue in 2025 to 36% in 2034, worth USD 112 million rising to USD 275.9 million; Latin America moves from 10% of revenue in 2025 to 12% in 2034, worth USD 35 million rising to USD 92 million. Against that, Europe at 34% moving to 30%, North America at 18% moving to 16%, Middle East and Africa at 6% moving to 6%, a fall in share, not in revenue. The practical consequence is that regional weighting decides whether a participant matches the market rate or trails it, regardless of how its own revenue reads.
The series never breaks trajectory. Year by year the total runs USD 243.8 million in 2020, USD 325.6 million in 2024, USD 350 million in 2025, USD 379 million in 2026, USD 538.9 million in 2030 and USD 766.3 million in 2034. The forecast rate of 9.2% sits against 7.5% over the historical period, so the projection extends an observed trend instead of proposing a new one. That moves the planning question away from timing a turn and onto the type and regional mixes, where the actual movement is.
Market Growth Factors
The fastest line decides the blended rate
Market Drivers
3- 01The fastest line decides the blended rate
Food Grade Krill Meal compounds at 12% against 9.2% for the market, rising from USD 66.5 million in 2025 to USD 183.9 million in 2034 and from 19% of revenue to 24%. Set against 8.4% at the other end of the axis, this is the line that decides whether the market's 9.2% holds. Exposure to this line, not to the market as a whole, is what determines a supplier's own rate.
- 02The two largest regions hold most of the base
34% of 2025 revenue (USD 119 million) is generated in Europe, reaching USD 230 million by 2034 at an unchanged 30%. Asia Pacific is next at 32% of revenue, USD 112 million in 2025 and USD 275.9 million in 2034. Most of the base and most of the growth sit in those two, and a plan spread evenly across regions therefore over-invests outside them.
- 03Fifteen years of unbroken growth underpin the forecast
The historical period compounded at 7.5%; USD 243.8 million in 2020, USD 325.6 million in 2024 and USD 350 million in 2025. The forecast continues at 9.2% to USD 766.3 million in 2034. Fifteen years of unbroken growth in the series means the forecast rests on a demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround, and it is why the 9.2% rate is applied flat across the whole period instead of ramped through it.
Growth drivers
| # | Growth driver | Impact | Gross contribution (Million) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |

Restraints
| # | Restraint | Impact | Estimated reduction (Million) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Southern Ocean catch-limit constraints on supply growth | Medium-High | −45 | Medium | Medium | High |

| Total | −73.7 | |||||
Drivers contribute 490 Million and restraints remove 73.7 Million, a net 416.3 Million, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Three sources account for the growth to 2034: 9.2% compounding across the base, share moving toward the faster type lines, and above-market expansion in the leading regions.
Restraining Factors
Downside case: USD 674.5 million by 2034, against USD 766.3 million in the base case
Market Restraints
2- 01Downside case: USD 674.5 million by 2034, against USD 766.3 million in the base case
A bear case of USD 674.5 million in 2034, against USD 766.3 million in the base case, rests on one stated assumption: the bear case assumes catch quotas tighten, substitute omega-3 ingredients gain share faster, and aquafeed formulators slow their adoption of krill meal relative to the base case. Neither case changes the USD 350 million 2025 base.
- 02The largest line is not the fastest
Feed Grade Krill Meal carries 81% of 2025 revenue at USD 283.5 million but compounds at 8.4% against 9.2% for the market, taking its share to 76% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 582.4 million. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
Where the forecast could be beaten
Market Opportunities
2- 01Where the forecast could be beaten
The bull case assumes Southern Ocean catch quotas expand modestly and aquafeed and nutraceutical demand adopt krill meal faster than the base case, without new supply constraints emerging. On that assumption the market reaches USD 858.3 million by 2034 against USD 766.3 million in the base case, from the same USD 350 million in 2025.
- 02Food Grade Krill Meal share moves from 19% to 24%
Share on the type axis moves toward Food Grade Krill Meal, from 19% in 2025 to 24% in 2034, on 12% growth against the market's 9.2% and revenue rising from USD 66.5 million to USD 183.9 million. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds Feed Grade Krill Meal, which is the harder and more expensive fight.
Market Challenges
The total depends on a single line
Market Challenges
2- 01The total depends on a single line
With 81% of 2025 revenue and 76% of 2034 revenue (USD 283.5 million rising to USD 582.4 million) Feed Grade Krill Meal is where the market's exposure sits. Anything that changes demand for it changes the headline number; nothing else on the axis carries that weight.
- 02Norway is 58.82% of Europe
Of Europe's USD 119 million in 2025, USD 70 million (58.82%) comes from Norway alone, rising to USD 132 million by 2034. Read as a region it looks diversified; read by weight it is not, and the regional forecast inherits whatever happens in that one market.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesThe global krill meal market is cut five ways: by type, application, end use, processing grade and packaging. Revenue does not add across them: each is a different cut of the same total.
There are two lines on the type axis, and all of them grow in revenue between 2025 and 2034. What separates them is share: one gains it, the other gives it up.

| Feed Grade Krill Meal | $284M | 81% | $582M | 76%-5 | 8.4% |
Feed grade product leads because aquaculture and livestock formulators buy in bulk at lower per-unit cost, and established supply agreements with feed manufacturers sustain volume. Food grade krill meal grows faster as nutraceutical and premium pet food brands seek higher-purity, traceable marine protein, and consumer willingness to pay a premium for certified sourcing widens. Food Grade Krill Meal outgrows every other line on this axis, narrowing the gap to Feed Grade Krill Meal. Feed Grade Krill Meal remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order. Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.

| Online Stores | $98M | 28% | $276M | 36%+8 | 12.2% |
Supermarkets and hypermarkets remain the leading channel because they offer the broadest shelf reach and brand visibility for finished krill-based products, supporting steady repeat purchase. Online stores grow fastest as buyers increasingly research and purchase specialty marine supplements directly, drawn by subscription models, product education content and channel-specific pricing that traditional retail formats do not match. By 2034 the largest line is Online Stores and no longer Supermarkets/Hypermarkets, the one axis here where the order actually changes.

Aquafeed leads because salmon and shrimp producers rely on krill meal as a proven palatability and pigmentation enhancer at scale, with long-standing procurement relationships. Nutraceuticals grow fastest as omega-3 supplement brands diversify beyond fish oil toward krill-derived phospholipid formulations, supported by rising consumer interest in bioavailable marine nutrition and expanding retail supplement categories. Aquafeed remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

| Deshelled (Low-Fluoride) Krill Meal | $98M | 28% | $276M | 36%+8 | 12.2% |
Whole krill meal leads because it costs less to produce and suits feed formulations where fluoride content is not tightly restricted, keeping it the default choice for many aquafeed and livestock applications. Deshelled, low-fluoride meal grows fastest as shrimp feed producers and premium pet food makers adopt stricter fluoride limits and prioritize refined, higher-value ingredient specifications. By 2034 Whole Krill Meal is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

| Retail/Consumer Packaging | $52.50M | 15% | $153M | 20%+5 | 12.6% |
Bulk packaging leads because feed manufacturers and aquaculture integrators purchase in large industrial volumes through established logistics and shipping arrangements that favor bulk handling. Retail and consumer packaging grows fastest as supplement and premium pet food brands expand direct sales, requiring smaller, branded, consumer-ready formats that bulk logistics were never designed to serve. Bulk Packaging remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

Norway
The largest market in Europe, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 58.8%
- Of global 20%
- Revenue $70M → $132M
58.82% of Europe's base-year revenue comes from Norway; USD 70 million, rising to USD 132 million by 2034. At 58.82% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Europe's revenue is generated in other markets. Set against USD 119 million and USD 230 million for the region, it is why this market, and not a smaller one, is the one reported in full.
Norway buys along the same lines as the market globally; Feed Grade Krill Meal first at 81% of 2025 revenue and 76% in 2034, Food Grade Krill Meal fastest at 12% on a share moving from 19% to 24%. With 58.82% of Europe concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. The full report reports Norway by type separately.
Krill meal produced in Norway falls under the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, Mattilsynet, operating within the wider European feed and food safety framework since krill meal is used mainly as an aquafeed and nutraceutical ingredient. Harvesting itself is overseen separately by the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries, which sets vessel licensing and catch conditions for krill taken from the Southern Ocean under CCAMLR arrangements. A supplier placing krill meal on the market must meet feed hygiene and traceability requirements equivalent to those in the EU Feed Hygiene Regulation, including facility approval, batch traceability back to the catch, and control of contaminants such as fluoride, which krill naturally concentrate. Labelling must state the species origin, intended use as feed or dietary ingredient, and composition, with conformity to recognised industry standards on freshness and oxidation stability expected of any exporter supplying European or global feed manufacturers.
The suppliers tracked in this study (SipCarp, Qrill, Shandong Keruier Biological Company, La Merced, Sunflower Enterprise, Nutrafeed, SEAPRO, Qingdao Kangjing, Beijing Jin-Ye and Interrybflot.) compete in Norway across the type lines above. Feed Grade Krill Meal, at 81% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Food Grade Krill Meal, growing at 12%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. China
The largest market in Asia Pacific, growing 2.6×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 51.8%
- Of global 16.6%
- Revenue $58M → $150M
51.79% of Asia Pacific's base-year revenue comes from China; USD 58 million, rising to USD 150 million by 2034. Its 51.79% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Asia Pacific is not a proxy for it. Regional revenue of USD 112 million in 2025 and USD 275.9 million in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
The type pattern in China is the global one: 81% of 2025 revenue in Feed Grade Krill Meal, 76% by 2034, against 12% growth in Food Grade Krill Meal taking it from 19% to 24%. Its 51.79% weight in Asia Pacific means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. The full report reports China by type separately.
China regulates krill meal as an aquafeed raw material under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, which administers feed registration through its feed additive and feed raw material catalogues. A domestic producer or importer must have the product listed as an approved feed ingredient before sale, with production facilities subject to inspection and licensing consistent with national feed hygiene rules. Imported krill meal additionally passes through customs inspection administered by the General Administration of Customs, which checks documentation on origin, processing method, and contaminant testing before clearance. Labelling must disclose species, intended animal use, and storage conditions in Chinese, and conformity to national feed quality standards covering protein content bands and impurity limits is required. Given krill meal's growing role in aquaculture feed, compliance with these registration and inspection steps determines market access rather than being a formality suppliers can bypass.
Competition in China runs between the suppliers this study tracks: SipCarp, Qrill, Shandong Keruier Biological Company, La Merced, Sunflower Enterprise, Nutrafeed, SEAPRO, Qingdao Kangjing, Beijing Jin-Ye and Interrybflot.. Feed Grade Krill Meal, at 81% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Food Grade Krill Meal, growing at 12%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. A supplier weighted toward Asia Pacific is competing over a base of USD 112 million in 2025, reaching USD 275.9 million by 2034 on the trajectory this study models.

North America Market Analysis
The 3rd-largest region covered — 2 points of share move elsewhere by 2034, while revenue still grows 1.9×.
- Rank 3 of 5
- 2025 share 18%
- By 2034 16%
- Revenue $63M → $123M
North America holds 18% of the global krill meal market in 2025, worth USD 63 million with USD 122.6 million projected for 2034. That makes it the third-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
Share settles at 16% in 2034, while nothing contracts here; other regions simply grow faster, which shows up as relative weight, not as falling revenue.
Feed Grade Krill Meal leads here as it does globally, at 81% of 2025 revenue, and Food Grade Krill Meal again grows fastest at 12%. Revenue for North America is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
United States
Sets the pace for North America at 76.2% of it, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 76.2%
- Of global 13.7%
- Revenue $48M → $92M
The United States is the largest market within North America, generating USD 48 million in 2025 and projected to reach USD 92 million by 2034. Because it is 76.19% of the region in the base year, North America's totals move with this one country instead of a spread of them. Regional revenue of USD 63 million in 2025 and USD 122.6 million in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
The type pattern in the United States is the global one: 81% of 2025 revenue in Feed Grade Krill Meal, 76% by 2034, against 12% growth in Food Grade Krill Meal taking it from 19% to 24%. Since 76.19% of North America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. Revenue by type for the United States is reported separately in the full report.
In the United States, krill meal intended for animal feed is regulated jointly by the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine and the Association of American Feed Control Officials, whose model definitions individual states adopt into their own feed laws. A supplier must ensure the ingredient is recognized as safe for its intended feed use, either through an accepted AAFCO definition or a food additive petition route, and must register any manufacturing facility with the FDA under current good manufacturing practice rules for animal food. When krill oil or meal-derived extracts are marketed as dietary supplements for human use, they fall instead under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, which places responsibility for safety and accurate labelling on the manufacturer without pre-market approval. Labels must correctly identify species source, given that krill allergens can cross-react with shellfish allergies, and must state guaranteed analysis values for feed products.
SipCarp, Qrill, Shandong Keruier Biological Company, La Merced, Sunflower Enterprise, Nutrafeed, SEAPRO, Qingdao Kangjing, Beijing Jin-Ye and Interrybflot. are the suppliers covered in the United States. Volume sits in Feed Grade Krill Meal at 81% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Food Grade Krill Meal at 12% growth. A supplier weighted toward North America is competing over a base of USD 63 million in 2025, reaching USD 122.6 million by 2034 on the trajectory this study models.

Within North America, Canada accounts for 15.87% of regional revenue and 2.86% of the global total, worth USD 10 million in 2025 and USD 18 million by 2034.
Latin America Market Analysis
The 4th-largest region covered — it picks up 2 points of share by 2034, while revenue still grows 2.6×.
- Rank 4 of 5
- 2025 share 10%
- By 2034 12%
- Revenue $35M → $92M
In Latin America, 10% of global revenue puts 2025 at USD 35 million and reaches USD 92 million by 2034. Among the five regions it ranks fourth by revenue in both years.
By 2034 the share has moved up to 12%, so the region grows faster than the market's 9.2% and takes a larger part of the revenue added by 2034 than its 2025 weight implies.
Within the region the type split tracks the global one; 81% of 2025 revenue in Feed Grade Krill Meal, fastest growth of 12% in Food Grade Krill Meal. Per-axis and per-country detail for Latin America sits in the full report.
Chile
Sets the pace for Latin America at 62.9% of it, growing 2.6×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 62.9%
- Of global 6.3%
- Revenue $22M → $58M
Chile is the largest market within Latin America, generating USD 22 million in 2025 and projected to reach USD 58 million by 2034. At 62.86% of regional revenue in the base year it is not one market among several, the region's trajectory is largely this country's trajectory. Regional revenue of USD 35 million in 2025 and USD 92 million in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
The type pattern in Chile is the global one: 81% of 2025 revenue in Feed Grade Krill Meal, 76% by 2034, against 12% growth in Food Grade Krill Meal taking it from 19% to 24%. Its 62.86% weight in Latin America means those movements carry straight into the regional totals. The full report reports Chile by type separately.
Chile's regulatory oversight of krill meal begins with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, Sernapesca, which licenses vessels and processing operations and enforces sanitary standards for marine-derived feed ingredients under fisheries and aquaculture law. Because Chile is a major supplier to its own salmon farming sector, krill meal destined for aquafeed must meet the feed safety and traceability requirements set by Sernapesca alongside the Chilean Institute of Public Health where products cross into human supplement use. A processor must maintain HACCP-based hygiene controls, document the catch area consistent with CCAMLR reporting obligations where krill originates in Antarctic waters, and label the product with species identity and intended use. Export shipments are additionally subject to health certification confirming the meal meets the importing country's own feed or food safety conformity requirements before departure.
In Chile the field is SipCarp, Qrill, Shandong Keruier Biological Company, La Merced, Sunflower Enterprise, Nutrafeed, SEAPRO, Qingdao Kangjing, Beijing Jin-Ye and Interrybflot.. The commercially relevant division is 81% of 2025 revenue in Feed Grade Krill Meal, where the volume is, against 12% growth in Food Grade Krill Meal, where share moves. A supplier weighted toward Latin America is competing over a base of USD 35 million in 2025, reaching USD 92 million by 2034 on the trajectory this study models.
Peru
2nd-largest in Latin America, growing 2.5×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 22.9%
- Of global 2.3%
- Revenue $8M → $20M
Within Latin America, Peru accounts for 22.86% of regional revenue and 2.29% of the global total, worth USD 8 million in 2025 and USD 20 million by 2034.
Middle East and Africa Market Analysis
The 5th-largest region covered, holding its share flat through 2034, while revenue still grows 2.2×.
- Rank 5 of 5
- 2025 share 6%
- By 2034 6%
- Revenue $21M → $46M
6% of the global krill meal market sits in Middle East and Africa in 2025, worth USD 21 million on the way to USD 46 million by 2034. That makes it the fifth-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
6% of global revenue sits here in 2034, below the 2025 level, though revenue still rises throughout; the shift is in the region's weight against faster-growing ones, which is not the same as weakening demand.
Within the region the type split tracks the global one; 81% of 2025 revenue in Feed Grade Krill Meal, fastest growth of 12% in Food Grade Krill Meal. Per-axis and per-country detail for Middle East and Africa sits in the full report.
South Africa
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 2.0×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 38.1%
- Of global 2.3%
- Revenue $8M → $16M
The largest single market in Middle East and Africa is South Africa, at USD 8 million in 2025 and USD 16 million in 2034. It accounts for 38.1% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Set against USD 21 million and USD 46 million for the region, it is why this market, and not a smaller one, is the one reported in full.
South Africa buys along the same lines as the market globally; Feed Grade Krill Meal first at 81% of 2025 revenue and 76% in 2034, Food Grade Krill Meal fastest at 12% on a share moving from 19% to 24%. Because the country carries 38.1% of Middle East and Africa, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. South Africa carries its own type breakdown in the full report.
South Africa does not operate a krill fishery of its own, so regulatory oversight centres on import and use of krill meal as an animal feed ingredient under the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, administering the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies and Stock Remedies Act. A supplier bringing krill meal into the country must register the product as a farm feed before sale, with registration assessing composition, intended species of use, and safety of any processing aids. Import consignments are also subject to veterinary and phytosanitary clearance confirming the marine origin material carries no disease risk to livestock or aquaculture stock. Labelling must state the guaranteed analysis, species origin, and directions for use consistent with the Act's feed labelling schedule, and any health-related claims made for supplement applications fall additionally under the Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act.
SipCarp, Qrill, Shandong Keruier Biological Company, La Merced, Sunflower Enterprise, Nutrafeed, SEAPRO, Qingdao Kangjing, Beijing Jin-Ye and Interrybflot. are the suppliers covered in South Africa. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Feed Grade Krill Meal at 81% of 2025 revenue, and taking Food Grade Krill Meal while it grows at 12%. The commercial size of that position is USD 21 million in 2025, moving to USD 46 million by 2034 across the forecast period.
United Arab Emirates
2nd-largest in Middle East and Africa, growing 2.2×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 28.6%
- Of global 1.7%
- Revenue $6M → $13M
Within Middle East and Africa, the United Arab Emirates accounts for 28.57% of regional revenue and 1.71% of the global total, worth USD 6 million in 2025 and USD 13 million by 2034.

Competitive Landscape
Scale in Feed Grade Krill Meal and Growth in Food Grade Krill Meal Set the Terms of Competition
Suppliers in scope: SipCarp, Qrill, Shandong Keruier Biological Company, La Merced, Sunflower Enterprise, Nutrafeed, SEAPRO, Qingdao Kangjing, Beijing Jin-Ye and Interrybflot..
Competition follows the type split, not the regional one. Feed Grade Krill Meal is 81% of 2025 revenue at USD 283.5 million and still 76% in 2034, so it is where the volume sits and where an incumbent's position is hardest to move. Movement is concentrated in Food Grade Krill Meal; 12% growth, against 8.4% at the other end of the axis in Feed Grade Krill Meal. The two rarely sit with the same supplier, and that is the reason a USD 350 million market is not already consolidated.
Competitive position in krill meal rests first on harvesting and processing scale: access to Antarctic krill fishing quotas, purpose-built vessels and onboard processing capacity determines how much raw material a supplier can convert before quality degrades. Regulatory and sustainability certification, particularly compliance with catch-limit reporting and independent fishery certification, increasingly decides which suppliers large feed and supplement buyers will contract with. The largest players combine vessel-based harvesting with integrated processing and established distribution into aquafeed formulators, giving them cost and reliability advantages. Smaller and regional suppliers compete on refined product grades, private-label supply to supplement brands, and flexible, smaller-volume distribution regional integrators are not built to serve.
The regional picture sets the entry cost: 34% of revenue is in Europe and 32% in Asia Pacific, so a credible global position requires both, while Middle East and Africa at 6% can be served opportunistically.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
Market size was built upward from estimated Antarctic krill catch volumes reported under Southern Ocean fishery quotas, applying meal-yield ratios from raw catch to dried krill meal, then multiplying resulting tonnage by realized per-tonne prices separately for feed-grade and food-grade product. Aquafeed inclusion-rate data from salmon and shrimp feed formulations anchored the feed-grade volume estimate, while nutraceutical and pet food ingredient purchase volumes anchored the food-grade estimate. This bottom-up build was then checked against disclosed harvesting and ingredient segment revenue from krill processing companies and aquafeed input-cost disclosures. Where the two diverged, the bottom-up yield or price assumption was corrected, not averaged with the disclosed figure.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research targeted procurement and formulation managers at salmon and shrimp aquafeed producers, ingredient sourcing leads at pet food manufacturers, and supply chain managers at nutraceutical and dietary supplement companies who specify krill-derived inputs. Commercial and sales leads at krill harvesting and processing companies were also interviewed to confirm realized pricing and shifts in feed-grade versus food-grade demand. Sampling emphasized Norway, given its concentration of krill harvesting and processing capacity, alongside China, Chile and the United States, where the largest volumes of aquafeed and nutraceutical demand are concentrated. Regulatory contacts familiar with Southern Ocean catch reporting were consulted to confirm quota and harvest-volume context.
Desk research drew on catch and quota reporting published under the Southern Ocean fishery's regulatory framework, national fisheries statistics from Norway's fisheries directorate, and customs trade data classified under krill meal and marine-protein-meal codes to track cross-border shipment volumes. Aquafeed industry benchmarks covering salmon and shrimp feed formulation costs, and nutraceutical industry ingredient-pricing references for marine-derived omega-3 inputs, supplemented these figures. Company-level disclosures from listed krill harvesting and processing businesses, where available, were used to cross-check volume and revenue estimates built from catch and trade data.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from projected aquaculture production growth in salmon and shrimp farming, projected pet food category growth weighted toward premium and marine-protein formulations, and expected nutraceutical demand growth for krill-derived omega-3 products. Southern Ocean catch-quota trajectories were assumed to hold near current levels, since quota policy has historically changed gradually and rarely shifts sharply in either direction. Feed-grade pricing was normalized for the volatility seen in earlier years of the historical period, treating that volatility as a temporary supply disruption and not a repeating pattern. The forecast holds if aquafeed inclusion rates and nutraceutical adoption continue on their recent trajectories without a material change to catch-limit regulation.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Historical growth implied by the sizing build was back-tested against recorded catch and shipment volumes for the 2020 to 2024 period to confirm the yield and pricing assumptions held across those years. Segment share shifts, particularly the movement toward food-grade and deshelled, low-fluoride product, were reviewed against feedback from aquafeed and nutraceutical buyers on changing specification requirements. Sensitivities were tested on catch-quota tightening, on substitution by plant-based and algal omega-3 ingredients, and on feed-grade pricing swings, to confirm the forecast range remained reasonable under each condition instead of depending on a single assumption holding exactly.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is strongest for the aquafeed segment, where volume is anchored to well-reported salmon and shrimp feed formulation data. It is weaker for the food-grade and nutraceutical segments, where ingredient purchase reporting is thinner and pricing is less consistently disclosed. The clearest structural risk is a tightening of Southern Ocean catch quotas, which would constrain raw material supply independent of demand growth; a second is faster-than-expected substitution by algal or plant-based omega-3 ingredients in nutraceutical formulations. Overall confidence sits at a medium band, triangulated from adjacent aquafeed and fisheries data rather than direct company-level disclosure specific to krill meal.
