Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from unit shipment volumes of wrap-around, front-and-back, top-and-bottom, spot and corner-wrap hot melt labeling machines, combined with average selling prices that vary by automation level and output capacity band. Beverage-line installation counts and glass-container fill-line capacity additions anchor the largest segment, while pharmaceutical and personal-care unit volumes are built from container output estimates in those industries. The resulting bottom-up figure is checked against disclosed machinery-segment revenue and order backlog figures reported by the largest labeling equipment suppliers. Where a supplier's disclosed revenue implied a materially different total, the unit-price or installed-base assumption feeding that segment was revisited and corrected rather than averaging the two figures together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary input comes from structured conversations with packaging engineering and procurement leads at beverage, pharmaceutical and personal-care manufacturers who specify and purchase labeling equipment, plant-level maintenance managers who evaluate machine uptime and changeover cost, and sales and channel managers at labeling equipment suppliers and their regional distributors. Regulatory affairs contacts at pharmaceutical and personal-care producers are included where label placement and tamper-evidence requirements shape equipment specification. Sampling emphasizes North America and Europe, where the largest installed base of beverage bottling capacity sits, alongside Asia Pacific, where new bottling and pharmaceutical packaging capacity is being added fastest, to capture both replacement demand and new-line adoption patterns.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on machinery trade classification data under the relevant customs codes for labeling and packaging equipment, national manufacturing and capital goods shipment statistics for the countries covered, and beverage industry association output data covering glass and PET bottling volumes, which anchor the largest end-use segment. Pharmaceutical packaging volumes are cross-checked against regional drug approval and packaging-line registration filings. Public company filings and investor presentations from the largest labeling equipment suppliers provide segment-level machinery revenue disclosures used in the bottom-up check. Industry trade publications covering packaging machinery exhibitions and product launches are used to track configuration and automation-level shifts.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected growth in beverage bottling and fill-line capacity, the pace at which pharmaceutical and personal-care producers convert to hot melt adhesion for tamper-evident labeling, and the rate at which mid-size producers retrofit existing lines with higher-speed, automated stations. Pricing is held broadly stable in real terms, with modest premiums for high-speed, fully automated configurations as their installation share grows. The forecast normalizes for capital spending deferred in 2020 and 2021, treating that period as a temporary dip, not a shift in underlying demand. For the forecast to hold, beverage packaging capacity additions must continue at a pace similar to the last five years.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Historical output was back-tested against recorded growth in beverage bottling capacity and machinery shipment data for 2020 through 2024, confirming that the modeled dip in 2020 and recovery through 2023 track the capacity data itself, not an assumed shape. Segment-level shifts, particularly the move toward corner-wrap and spot configurations, were reviewed against packaging engineering input on container diversification trends. Sensitivities were tested on the pace of pharmaceutical and personal-care adoption and on beverage capacity investment timing, the two assumptions with the widest plausible range. Regional splits were checked against known concentrations of bottling and pharmaceutical packaging capacity by country.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in the beverage end use and in the wrap-around and front-and-back machine categories, where installed-base and shipment data are most complete. It is weaker in the corner-wrap and spot categories and in the personal-care end use, where adoption is newer and supplier reporting is thinner. Regional confidence is stronger in North America and Europe than in the Middle East and Africa and Latin America, where fewer disclosed transactions are available. A shift in beverage packaging capital spending, or faster-than-assumed migration to alternative labeling technologies in plastic-container categories, are the structural risks most likely to force a revision.
