Market Analysis & Outlook
Fanfold corrugated is corrugated board supplied as a continuously folded, pre-scored stack rather than individual flat sheets, designed to feed directly into automated case-forming, void-fill, and protective-wrap equipment on a packaging line. Buyers are fulfillment centers, contract packagers, and manufacturers that need a steady, unattended supply of board for high-throughput packing operations instead of pre-cut boxes ordered in batches. The format spans single-walled and double-walled constructions and multiple flute profiles, selected according to the weight and fragility of the product being packed.
The global fanfold corrugated market is valued at USD 9.15 billion in 2025 and is set to reach USD 17.02 billion by 2034, a compound annual growth rate of 7.21% across the 2026-2034 forecast period. The study tracks the market across USD 6.95 billion in 2020, USD 8.64 billion in 2024, USD 9.75 billion in 2026 and USD 12.88 billion in 2030.
On the type axis, growth rates run from 5.84% for Single-walled up to 9.32% for Double-walled. Single-walled carries the volume: USD 5.86 billion and 64% of revenue in 2025, USD 9.7 billion and 57% in 2034. Double-walled take share over the period; Single-walled give it up while still growing in absolute terms.
By application, E-Commerce accounts for 47.98% of 2025 revenue at USD 4.39 billion, reaching USD 9.53 billion and 55.99% by 2034. It is also the fastest-growing line on this axis at 8.99%, so the split concentrates over the period instead of balancing. This axis divides the same revenue as the type split instead of adding to it, so the two are read together and never summed.
USD 3.48 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in Asia Pacific, 38.03% of the global total and the largest regional share; it reaches USD 6.98 billion by 2034. North America is next at 26.01% and USD 2.38 billion, and Middle East and Africa last at 6.01%. Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa gain share across the period, so growth is not distributed evenly between regions.
The 2025 total is triangulated from published sources and category proxies, with no independently sourced count behind it. Segment, regional and country splits are estimated on the same basis, which bounds the precision of the figures above. Coverage runs to five regions, two type lines and five segmentation axes across a fifteen-year window.

- The study covers 2020 through 2034 with 2025 as the base year, reporting five regions and five segmentation axes separately, with revenue, share and a growth rate for every line in each year.
Market Trends
Revenue Share, By By Type
Base year 2025Single-walled leads with 64.0% of by type segment revenue.
Share of by type segment revenue, most recent base year.
Three movements define the forecast period in the global fanfold corrugated market: how the type mix changes, where regional weight shifts, and the rate at which the total compounds.
The direction of the market is not in question in any of the three. Each line and each region grows in revenue terms; what separates them is which takes the larger part of the growth.
Composition shifts on the type axis. Double-walled grows at 9.32% across 2026-2034 against 5.84% for Single-walled, the widest spread on the type axis. Double-walled takes its share of revenue from 36% to 43% while Single-walled gives up ground, from 64% to 57%. The revenue figures behind that are USD 3.29 billion to USD 7.32 billion and USD 5.86 billion to USD 9.7 billion. Both expand; where a supplier sits on the axis still decides whether it tracks the market.
Regional weight shifts toward Asia Pacific, Latin America and Middle East and Africa. Asia Pacific moves from 38.03% of revenue in 2025 to 41.01% in 2034, worth USD 3.48 billion rising to USD 6.98 billion; Latin America moves from 7.98% of revenue in 2025 to 8.52% in 2034, worth USD 0.73 billion rising to USD 1.45 billion; Middle East and Africa moves from 6.01% of revenue in 2025 to 6.52% in 2034, worth USD 0.55 billion rising to USD 1.11 billion. The offsetting side is North America at 26.01% moving to 23.97%, Europe at 21.97% moving to 19.98%, none of which contracts. That makes the regional split worth reading directly instead of scaling from the global rate: the same market rate produces different outcomes depending on where a supplier's revenue sits.
Growth compounds at 7.21% without a step change. Year by year the total runs USD 6.95 billion in 2020, USD 8.64 billion in 2024, USD 9.15 billion in 2025, USD 9.75 billion in 2026, USD 12.88 billion in 2030 and USD 17.02 billion in 2034. There is no discontinuity to time, and 7.21% forecast growth against 5.66% historical means the trend continues and does not turn. That moves the planning question away from timing a turn and onto the type and regional mixes, where the actual movement is.
Market Growth Factors
Growth is concentrated in Double-walled
Market Drivers
3- 01Growth is concentrated in Double-walled
9.32% growth in Double-walled, against 7.21% for the market as a whole, moves it from USD 3.29 billion and 36% of revenue in 2025 to USD 7.32 billion and 43% in 2034. Nothing else on the axis grows as fast (Single-walled manages 5.84%) so the blended 7.21% is carried by this one line instead of shared across them. Where a supplier sits on this axis therefore decides whether it grows with the market or below it.
- 02Regional weight, not regional count
Asia Pacific is the largest region at USD 3.48 billion in 2025, 38.03% of global revenue, and reaches USD 6.98 billion by 2034 on a share rising to 41.01%. Behind it, North America holds 26.01%; USD 2.38 billion rising to USD 4.08 billion. Because both the existing revenue and the revenue added concentrate in these two, regional weighting matters more to a forecast than regional count does.
- 03The trend is already in the record
The historical period compounded at 5.66%; USD 6.95 billion in 2020, USD 8.64 billion in 2024 and USD 9.15 billion in 2025. From there the forecast carries 7.21% through to USD 17.02 billion in 2034. Because the growth is already in the record and not only in the projection, the rate is held flat across the forecast instead of ramped, and the risk in the number sits in the mix assumptions, not in whether the market grows at all.

Drivers contribute 8.25 Billion and restraints remove 0.38 Billion, a net 7.87 Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Three sources account for the growth to 2034: 7.21% compounding across the base, share moving toward the faster type lines, and above-market expansion in the leading regions.
Restraining Factors
The bear case and what drives it
Market Restraints
2- 01The bear case and what drives it
A bear case of USD 15.32 billion in 2034, against USD 17.02 billion in the base case, rests on one stated assumption: the bear case assumes containerboard price volatility persists longer than assumed and capital spending on new automated packaging lines slows, delaying the shift toward double-walled and premium flute grades. Neither case changes the USD 9.15 billion 2025 base.
- 02Single-walled grows below the market rate
Single-walled carries 64% of 2025 revenue at USD 5.86 billion but compounds at 5.84% against 7.21% for the market, taking its share to 57% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 9.7 billion. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
Upside case: USD 18.72 billion by 2034
Market Opportunities
2- 01Upside case: USD 18.72 billion by 2034
The bull case assumes faster adoption of automated case-forming and void-fill equipment among mid-sized fulfillment operations and a quicker shift to double-walled grades than the base case. On that assumption the market reaches USD 18.72 billion by 2034 against USD 17.02 billion in the base case, from the same USD 9.15 billion in 2025.
- 02The opening is on the type axis, not the regional one
Share on the type axis moves toward Double-walled, from 36% in 2025 to 43% in 2034, on 9.32% growth against the market's 7.21% and revenue rising from USD 3.29 billion to USD 7.32 billion. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds Single-walled, which is the harder and more expensive fight.
Market Challenges
One type line carries the market
Market Challenges
2- 01One type line carries the market
Single-walled is 64% of 2025 revenue at USD 5.86 billion and still 57% at USD 9.7 billion in 2034. Anything that changes demand for it changes the headline number; nothing else on the axis carries that weight.
- 02Single-country exposure in Asia Pacific
Of Asia Pacific's USD 3.48 billion in 2025, USD 1.57 billion (45.11%) comes from China alone, rising to USD 2.93 billion by 2034. A regional number that depends this heavily on one country carries that country's specific conditions inside it, which a reader treating the region as diversified would miss.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesThe market is divided by type and by application, end-use industry, flute profile and distribution channel; five axes in all. Each axis cuts the same total revenue along a different commercial dimension, so the splits are alternative views of one market, not additions to it.
There are two lines on the type axis, and all of them grow in revenue between 2025 and 2034. What separates them is share: one gains it, the other gives it up.

| Double-walled | $3.29B | 36% | $7.32B | 43%+7 | 9.3% |
Single-walled board leads because it is the lowest-cost option for standard-weight cartons and void-fill needs that account for most packaging volume across food, retail, and light industrial shipments. Double-walled board grows faster as e-commerce shippers move heavier, more fragile items through automated lines, where its added stacking strength and cushioning reduce transit damage enough to justify the higher material cost. Double-walled grows fastest here, so its share rises while Single-walled gives ground. The order does not change: Single-walled is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds. Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.

| Others | $1.10B | 12% | $1.87B | 11%-1 | 6.1% |
E-commerce leads and is growing fastest because online fulfillment operations depend on protective, right-sized packaging that can be dispensed automatically at high speed, a use case this format is built around, and continued growth in direct-to-consumer shipping keeps pulling more volume into that channel. Offline retail grows more slowly as in-store and wholesale replenishment volumes plateau relative to direct shipping, while other uses stay a smaller, more fragmented base. The order does not change: E-Commerce is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

| Others | $0.92B | 10.1% | $1.53B | 9%-1.1 | 5.8% |
Food and beverage leads because packaged food and beverage goods ship in the highest unit volumes of any end use, and fanfold board's automated feed suits the high-speed case-packing lines common in that sector. Consumer electronics and appliances is growing fastest as more of that category moves through direct-to-consumer channels, where fragile, variably sized items need protective packaging formed on demand instead of pre-cut boxes ordered in batches. Food & Beverage remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

C-flute leads because it offers the general-purpose balance of cushioning and stacking strength that suits the widest range of standard carton and void-fill applications across the market. E-flute is growing fastest as more volume shifts toward thin, retail-ready packaging where a slim profile and clean die-cut edges matter more than raw crush resistance, a shift concentrated in e-commerce and consumer electronics shipments. C-Flute remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.

Direct sales leads because large converters and brand owners buy fanfold board under standing supply agreements tied directly to their packaging-line specifications, a relationship that favors established mill and converter relationships over spot purchasing. Online retail platforms are growing fastest as smaller packagers and regional brand owners increasingly source board in smaller, more frequent order quantities that marketplace ordering handles more efficiently than a traditional sales account. The order does not change: Direct Sales is still largest in 2034, and what moves is how much it holds.

North America holds 26.01% of the global fanfold corrugated market in 2025, worth USD 2.38 billion on the way to USD 4.08 billion by 2034. Among the five regions it ranks second by revenue in both years.
Its share moves to 23.97% by 2034, though revenue still rises throughout; the shift is in the region's weight against faster-growing ones, which is not the same as weakening demand.
Single-walled leads here as it does globally, at 64% of 2025 revenue, and Double-walled again grows fastest at 9.32%. Per-axis and per-country detail for North America sits in the full report.

- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 68.1%
- Of global 17.7%
- Revenue $1.62B → $2.69B
68.07% of North America's base-year revenue comes from the United States; USD 1.62 billion, rising to USD 2.69 billion by 2034. 68.07% of the region in 2025 means the regional figures are, in practice, a view of this market with others attached. The region itself runs USD 2.38 billion to USD 4.08 billion over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Composition here matches the global split: the largest line is Single-walled at 64% of 2025 revenue, easing to 57% by 2034, and the fastest is Double-walled at 9.32%, from 36% to 43%. Since 68.07% of North America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. The United States carries its own type breakdown in the full report.
In the United States, fanfold corrugated packaging sits within the Federal Trade Commission's authority over environmental marketing claims, so labels stating that the material is recyclable or made from recycled content must meet the Green Guides. Where the corrugated board contacts food directly, converters follow the Food and Drug Administration's food contact substance rules for paper and paperboard. Board strength, bursting resistance, and moisture performance are tested against voluntary standards set by TAPPI and ASTM International, and buyers commonly specify these test methods in purchase contracts. No single federal agency licenses corrugated packaging itself; oversight instead comes through several states' extended producer responsibility laws for packaging, which place collection and recycling funding obligations on producers selling into those states.
The suppliers tracked in this study (Braepac Packaging, International Paper Company, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Independent Corrugator, Northwest Packaging, Box on Demand, Rondo Ganahl Aktiengesellschaft, Menasha Packaging Company and Papierfabrik Palm) compete in the United States across the type lines above. Single-walled, at 64% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Double-walled, growing at 9.32%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period. Country-level positioning and shares for each of these companies are part of the full report, not of this summary.

Germany
The largest market in Europe, growing 1.7×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 29.9%
- Of global 6.6%
- Revenue $0.60B → $0.99B
The largest single market in Europe is Germany, at USD 0.6 billion in 2025 and USD 0.99 billion in 2034. It accounts for 29.85% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Against regional totals of USD 2.01 billion in 2025 and USD 3.4 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
Germany buys along the same lines as the market globally; Single-walled first at 64% of 2025 revenue and 57% in 2034, Double-walled fastest at 9.32% on a share moving from 36% to 43%. Because the country carries 29.85% of Europe, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Per-type revenue for Germany appears on its own in the full report.
In Germany, fanfold corrugated packaging is governed by the Packaging Act, which requires any producer placing packaging on the German market to register with the central packaging register and join a dual system that finances collection and recycling. Where the board is intended for food contact, converters follow the European Union's framework regulation for food contact materials, supplemented by German risk assessment recommendations covering paper and board. Physical performance, such as edge crush and bursting strength, is verified against harmonised European standards developed through CEN. Suppliers exporting into Germany typically need documentation confirming both packaging registration and compliance with these material and testing standards before goods can be legally placed on the market.
Braepac Packaging, International Paper Company, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Independent Corrugator, Northwest Packaging, Box on Demand, Rondo Ganahl Aktiengesellschaft, Menasha Packaging Company and Papierfabrik Palm are the suppliers covered in Germany. Volume sits in Single-walled at 64% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Double-walled at 9.32% growth. That makes Europe a 21.97% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 2.01 billion rising to USD 3.4 billion, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.

At 45.11% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Asia Pacific's revenue is generated in other markets. Against regional totals of USD 3.48 billion in 2025 and USD 6.98 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
Demand in China follows the type mix reported at global level: Single-walled is the largest line at 64% of 2025 revenue, moving to 57% by 2034, while Double-walled grows fastest at 9.32% and takes its share from 36% to 43%. Because the country carries 45.11% of Asia Pacific, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Per-type revenue for China appears on its own in the full report.
In China, fanfold corrugated packaging is regulated through national standards issued under the Guobiao system and administered by the State Administration for Market Regulation together with the Standardization Administration of China, covering board grades, dimensional tolerances, and strength testing. Packaging intended for food contact must meet the national food safety standards for food contact materials, enforced by the same market regulation authority alongside health authorities. Producers selling into China are expected to hold test reports demonstrating conformity with the relevant Guobiao standard for their board grade, and customs clearance can require this documentation. Extended producer responsibility obligations for packaging waste are expanding, with certain provinces already requiring registration and reporting from producers and converters.
The suppliers tracked in this study (Braepac Packaging, International Paper Company, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Independent Corrugator, Northwest Packaging, Box on Demand, Rondo Ganahl Aktiengesellschaft, Menasha Packaging Company and Papierfabrik Palm) compete in China across the type lines above. Volume sits in Single-walled at 64% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Double-walled at 9.32% growth. Weighting toward Asia Pacific means competing for 38.03% of 2025 global revenue, a base of USD 3.48 billion moving to USD 6.98 billion across the forecast period.

Latin America Market Analysis
The 4th-largest region covered — it picks up 0.5 points of share by 2034, while revenue still grows 2.0×.
- Rank 4 of 5
- 2025 share 8%
- By 2034 8.5%
- Revenue $0.73B → $1.45B
USD 0.73 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in Latin America, 7.98% of the global fanfold corrugated market with USD 1.45 billion projected for 2034. Among the five regions it ranks fourth by revenue in both years.
Share climbs to 8.52% by 2034, so the region grows faster than the market's 7.21% and takes a larger part of the revenue added by 2034 than its 2025 weight implies.
The type mix reported at global level applies here, with Single-walled the largest line at 64% of 2025 revenue and Double-walled the fastest-growing at 9.32%. Latin America is reported axis by axis and country by country in the full study.
Brazil
The largest market in Latin America, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 52%
- Of global 4.2%
- Revenue $0.38B → $0.73B
Brazil is the largest market within Latin America, generating USD 0.38 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 0.73 billion by 2034. 52.05% of the region in the base year makes it the largest market here without making it the region. Regional revenue of USD 0.73 billion in 2025 and USD 1.45 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
Brazil buys along the same lines as the market globally; Single-walled first at 64% of 2025 revenue and 57% in 2034, Double-walled fastest at 9.32% on a share moving from 36% to 43%. Since 52.05% of Latin America's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. The full report reports Brazil by type separately.
In Brazil, fanfold corrugated packaging used for food contact falls under the health surveillance authority, ANVISA, which sets requirements for the composition and safety of paper and board food packaging. General technical conformity, including board strength and dimensional standards, is assessed against norms published by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards and verified through INMETRO's conformity assessment framework. Packaging producers also operate under the National Solid Waste Policy, which assigns shared responsibility for reverse logistics and recycling across manufacturers, importers, distributors, and retailers. Suppliers entering the Brazilian market generally need to demonstrate both food contact compliance, where applicable, and participation in an approved reverse logistics system for packaging waste.
In Brazil the field is Braepac Packaging, International Paper Company, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Independent Corrugator, Northwest Packaging, Box on Demand, Rondo Ganahl Aktiengesellschaft, Menasha Packaging Company and Papierfabrik Palm. Volume sits in Single-walled at 64% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Double-walled at 9.32% growth. That makes Latin America a 7.98% share of 2025 global revenue, USD 0.73 billion rising to USD 1.45 billion, for any supplier deciding where to concentrate.
Mexico
2nd-largest in Latin America, growing 1.9×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 30.1%
- Of global 2.4%
- Revenue $0.22B → $0.42B
2.4% of global revenue is generated in Mexico; USD 0.22 billion in 2025, reaching USD 0.42 billion in 2034, and 30.14% of Latin America.
Middle East and Africa Market Analysis
The 5th-largest region covered — it picks up 0.5 points of share by 2034, while revenue still grows 2.0×.
- Rank 5 of 5
- 2025 share 6%
- By 2034 6.5%
- Revenue $0.55B → $1.11B
USD 0.55 billion of 2025 revenue is generated in Middle East and Africa, 6.01% of the global fanfold corrugated market and reaches USD 1.11 billion by 2034. Among the five regions it ranks fifth by revenue in both years.
By 2034 the share has moved up to 6.52%, at a pace above the 7.21% global rate, so this region warrants separate treatment and should not be scaled off the total.
Single-walled leads here as it does globally, at 64% of 2025 revenue, and Double-walled again grows fastest at 9.32%. Revenue for Middle East and Africa is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
Saudi Arabia
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 1.9×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 34.5%
- Of global 2.1%
- Revenue $0.19B → $0.37B
The largest single market in Middle East and Africa is Saudi Arabia, at USD 0.19 billion in 2025 and USD 0.37 billion in 2034. 34.55% of the region in the base year makes it the largest market here without making it the region. Against regional totals of USD 0.55 billion in 2025 and USD 1.11 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
The type pattern in Saudi Arabia is the global one: 64% of 2025 revenue in Single-walled, 57% by 2034, against 9.32% growth in Double-walled taking it from 36% to 43%. Because the country carries 34.55% of Middle East and Africa, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Saudi Arabia carries its own type breakdown in the full report.
In Saudi Arabia, fanfold corrugated packaging is regulated through the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization, which sets technical standards for packaging materials and requires conformity certification before goods can be imported through the Saber platform. Packaging intended for direct food contact falls additionally under the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, which sets requirements for materials that may come into contact with food products. Exporters typically register their product and manufacturing facility on the conformity platform and obtain a certificate confirming the shipment matches the registered specification. Labelling must be presented in Arabic alongside any other language, identifying the manufacturer and the material composition of the packaging.
Braepac Packaging, International Paper Company, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Independent Corrugator, Northwest Packaging, Box on Demand, Rondo Ganahl Aktiengesellschaft, Menasha Packaging Company and Papierfabrik Palm are the suppliers covered in Saudi Arabia. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Single-walled at 64% of 2025 revenue, and taking Double-walled while it grows at 9.32%. A supplier weighted toward Middle East and Africa is competing over a base of USD 0.55 billion in 2025 reaching USD 1.11 billion by 2034, 6.01% of global revenue at the start of that period.
South Africa
2nd-largest in Middle East and Africa, growing 2.0×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 23.6%
- Of global 1.4%
- Revenue $0.13B → $0.26B
South Africa is sized at USD 0.13 billion in 2025, rising to USD 0.26 billion by 2034; 1.42% of global revenue and 23.64% of Middle East and Africa. It is reported separately from Saudi Arabia across every segmentation axis in the full report.

Competitive Landscape
Suppliers Compete on Single-walled Volume and Double-walled Momentum
Ten suppliers are covered: Braepac Packaging, International Paper Company, Smurfit Kappa, DS Smith, Independent Corrugator, Northwest Packaging, Box on Demand, Rondo Ganahl Aktiengesellschaft, Menasha Packaging Company and Papierfabrik Palm.
Where suppliers actually compete is along the type axis. The largest block of revenue is Single-walled: USD 5.86 billion in 2025 at 64% of the total, 57% in 2034. Incumbency there is expensive to challenge. Double-walled, compounding at 9.32% against 5.84% for Single-walled, is where share changes hands over the forecast period. The two rarely sit with the same supplier, and that is the reason a USD 9.15 billion market is not already consolidated.
Scale in board conversion and mill integration separates the largest suppliers, since owning paper production smooths input-cost swings and supports the volume commitments large e-commerce and food packagers require. Regional converting capacity matters as much as scale because fanfold board is bulky and freight-sensitive, so proximity to a customer's packaging line often decides who wins a contract regardless of size. Smaller and regional converters compete on responsiveness: faster changeovers, closer technical support for automated feeder equipment, and willingness to run shorter, more customized order quantities that larger integrated mills are less suited to serve.
Geographic reach is the other axis of competition. Asia Pacific alone accounts for 38.03% of 2025 revenue, so a supplier absent there is absent from the largest part of the market whatever its position elsewhere; North America adds a further 26.01%.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from converted board volume: fanfold sheet output by flute profile and wall construction, multiplied by realized per-unit board prices reported through containerboard and packaging trade benchmarks. Volume is anchored to corrugated converting capacity utilization and shipment data segmented by end-use category, then priced using regional board price indices that reflect the single-walled and double-walled grades this market actually trades in. That bottom-up figure is checked against the disclosed packaging-segment revenue of the major converters and box makers active in this space; where the two diverge, the volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build is corrected, most often the assumed price realization for double-walled grades in e-commerce accounts.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research targets commercial and procurement roles inside converters, corrugated box manufacturers, and large-volume board buyers: packaging engineers who specify flute and wall construction, procurement managers who negotiate board contracts, and plant operations staff who run automated case-forming and void-fill lines and can speak to actual consumption rates. Channel-side interviews cover distributors and contract packagers who source board on behalf of smaller brand owners, and regulatory or trade-body contacts where recycled-content and packaging-waste rules affect material choice. Sampling weights North America, Western Europe, and East Asia, where fanfold-fed automated packaging lines are most established, with lighter coverage of Latin America and the Middle East and Africa reflecting the smaller base of automated converting capacity in those regions.
Desk research draws on containerboard and kraft paper price series published by Fastmarkets RISI, corrugated shipment and capacity data reported by the Fibre Box Association in North America and FEFCO in Europe, and customs trade data filed under HS code 4819 for corrugated cartons and packing cases, which shows cross-border shipment volumes by grade. Extended producer responsibility registers in the European Union and equivalent packaging-waste reporting requirements in several Asian markets are used to track recycled-content mandates that affect material specification. Converters' own annual and sustainability reports supply disclosed packaging-segment volumes where available.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast carries forward the shift toward double-walled and thinner high-performance flute grades as e-commerce and appliance shipment volumes keep growing faster than general retail replenishment. Growth is built segment by segment: e-commerce and consumer-electronics applications are modeled against parcel-volume growth and average package weight trends, while food and industrial applications track more closely to underlying manufacturing output. Board pricing is assumed to normalize gradually after the sharper swings recorded in the historical period, not staying flat and not repeating that volatility. For the forecast to hold, automated packaging-line adoption needs to keep expanding among mid-sized fulfillment operations, and packaging-waste regulation needs to keep favoring corrugated substitution over flexible plastic alternatives.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Outputs are back-tested against recorded historical growth in containerboard shipments and corrugated converting output over the past five years, checking that the implied 2020-2025 trajectory matches actual capacity utilization instead of an assumed smooth curve. Segment shifts, particularly the move toward double-walled and e-commerce-driven volume, are reviewed against packaging engineers' own account of specification changes on their lines. Regional splits are sanity-checked against known converting-capacity locations, since board is expensive to ship and production tends to sit close to demand. Sensitivities were run on board-price normalization timing and on e-commerce parcel-volume growth, the two assumptions most likely to move the 2034 total if either runs materially ahead of or behind the base case.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmer for the type and application splits, where board-grade pricing and parcel-shipment data give a direct read on volume and mix. It is thinner for the end-use industry and distribution-channel splits, since fewer converters report packaging-segment revenue by end market and channel data relies more on distributor-level estimates than on disclosed figures. The main risk to the forecast is a sharp swing in containerboard pricing that changes the economics of double-walled adoption faster than assumed, or a slower-than-expected build-out of automated packaging-line capacity among mid-sized fulfillment operations, either of which would move the 2034 total without changing the underlying demand story.
