Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from platform unit volumes: the number of distinct vehicle programs launched on a shared electric or hybrid architecture each year, multiplied by the realized transfer price automakers attribute to that platform, covering body structure, battery enclosure integration and drivetrain mounting engineering. Volumes are drawn from vehicle production plans and homologation filings by model and platform family. That build is checked against the electrification capital expenditure and platform-amortization disclosures named automakers report in their own filings, and where the two diverge the bottom-up volume or price assumption is corrected instead of being averaged against the disclosed figure.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
