Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The base-year estimate is built upward from unit shipment volumes for each station type (combination, wall-mounted, vertical, portable and laboratory bench units) across the chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and electronics end markets, multiplied by realized average selling prices that vary by material of construction and compliance certification. That bottom-up build is then checked against the disclosed safety-and-facility-solutions segment revenue of publicly reporting suppliers such as Bradley Corporation, and against installed-base replacement rates implied by ANSI Z358.1 recommended annual inspection and testing cycles. Where the two diverge, the unit-volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build is corrected; the two figures are not averaged.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary interviews are directed at plant-level environment, health and safety managers and procurement officers responsible for specifying and budgeting emergency safety equipment, along with sales and channel managers at safety-equipment distributors who see order volumes across multiple facility types. A smaller set of conversations covers regulatory and compliance officers who track ANSI Z358.1 and EN 15154 inspection cycles at chemical, oil and gas and pharmaceutical sites. Sampling weights North America and Asia Pacific most heavily, reflecting the concentration of the existing installed base in the former and the pace of new industrial capacity addition in the latter, with a smaller allocation to Europe for standards-harmonization context.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on OSHA inspection and citation records for eyewash and shower non-compliance findings, the ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 standard text and its inspection-interval requirements, and the equivalent EN 15154 standard used across the European Union. Trade-flow data is checked against the Harmonized System code covering safety and sanitary fixtures, and supplier-side figures are cross-checked against Bradley Corporation's public financial disclosures, the only pure-play manufacturer in this set that reports separately. National Safety Council injury-incidence statistics for chemical and eye-contact exposure inform the underlying demand base.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical and electronics manufacturing capacity additions by region, combined with an assumed average station replacement cycle of ten to fifteen years drawn from ANSI Z358.1 durability and testing guidance. Regulatory enforcement intensity is treated as a step function that strengthens over the forecast window in markets adopting or tightening standards for the first time, not as a smooth trend. Unit pricing is held broadly flat in real terms, with a modest premium assumed for stainless steel and EN 15154-certified units. The 2020-2021 slowdown in industrial capital spending is treated as a temporary disruption and is not extrapolated into the forecast period.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against the recorded 2020-2024 growth path implied by the base-year build, confirming the historical trajectory is consistent with known industrial capital-spending patterns over that period. Segment-level shifts, including the rising share of portable and self-contained units and the growing weight of online and catalog-based purchasing, were reviewed against distributor and channel-manager input before being carried into the forecast. Sensitivities were run on the pace of regulatory enforcement in markets newly adopting ANSI- or EN-equivalent standards and on the cost of stainless steel and composite raw materials, both of which feed the unit-price assumption underlying the bottom-up build.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in North America and Europe, where a single enforced standard, recorded inspection data and one publicly reporting manufacturer anchor the size and the replacement-cycle assumption. It is thinner in China, where several of the manufacturers named in this report do not disclose unit or revenue figures, and in the Middle East, Africa and Latin America, where end-use and distribution-channel splits rely on adjacent industrial-safety-spend proxies rather than direct disclosure. A shift in enforcement timing in any of the large emerging producing markets, or a change in the assumed replacement cycle, is the most likely source of a future revision.
