Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from unit volumes and realised prices across the fence system's core components: energizer units sold by output class, conductor length sold by wire, tape and rope type, and the insulators, posts and accessory kits that accompany a typical installation. Regional unit volumes are anchored to livestock population counts, agricultural land under active grazing management, and residential pet-ownership rates, each converted to installed fence length and energizer count using typical spacing and output assumptions for that application. The resulting revenue build is checked against the disclosed agricultural-equipment and animal-management segment revenue of the diversified suppliers in the company list; where the two diverge, the unit-volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build is the one that gets corrected, not the disclosed figure.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interview targets center on procurement and operations roles that actually specify and repurchase fencing: farm and ranch operations managers, agricultural cooperative buyers, wildlife management agency staff responsible for exclusion projects, and facility security managers evaluating perimeter deterrents. Distribution-side interviews cover farm supply retail buyers and e-commerce category managers who see order volume and repeat-purchase patterns directly, along with regional installers who size energizer output for individual sites. Sampling weights North America and Oceania, where livestock fencing volumes are largest and where the major suppliers headquartered in those regions concentrate commercial activity, supplemented by Western European and South African contacts to cover regional variation in demand.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on national livestock inventory statistics published by agricultural departments in the United States, the European Union and Australia, since grazing animal counts anchor the unit-volume build directly. Customs and trade data under the harmonized codes covering electric fence energizers and insulated conductor wire supply import and export volumes by country. Agricultural equipment dealer association benchmarks and farm supply retail category reports provide realised pricing by product tier, and public filings from the diversified agricultural-equipment groups in the company list are used to cross-check segment-level revenue where those companies break out animal management or fencing product lines separately.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from the pace at which rotational and precision grazing practices expand across commercial livestock operations, the rate at which suburban households substitute physical fencing with portable containment systems, and the adoption curve for electric perimeter deterrents at commercial sites. Pricing assumes a gradual real-term decline in energizer cost per output unit as production scales, offset by a shift toward higher-output and solar-integrated units. The approach normalizes for a temporary post-2020 dip in installation activity tied to constrained on-farm capital spending, treating that dip as a delay in demand, not a permanent contraction. The forecast holds if rotational grazing adoption continues at its recent pace.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded historical growth in livestock fence installations and farm supply retail category sales for 2020 through 2024, checking that the modeled historical build reproduces the same year-on-year pattern before the forecast is extended forward. Segment share shifts, including the move toward portable fencing and solar power sources, were checked against installer and distributor feedback on order mix, not assumed from the top-down alone. Sensitivity testing varied grazing-land expansion rates and pet-ownership growth assumptions by several points in either direction to confirm the forecast range holds under slower adoption, and checked that regional shares stay consistent with each region's underlying livestock population trend.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest in the agriculture and permanent fencing figures, where livestock population data and disclosed agricultural-equipment revenue give a solid anchor for the unit-volume build. It is weaker in the pet containment and security segments, where purchases run through general retail and security-integrator channels that do not separately report fencing revenue, so those figures rest more on retail category proxies. Regional splits for Latin America and the Middle East and Africa carry the widest range given thinner public data on grazing-land management practices. A shift in grazing subsidy policy in a major agricultural market is the clearest risk to the installation-volume assumption.
