Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
Market size was built upward from unit volumes and per unit prices rather than assumed as a single top line figure. Annual point of sale terminal shipments, active contactless enabled card issuance and NFC capable mobile wallet activations were combined with terminal average selling price and per transaction processing take rate to construct segment revenue from the ground up. That bottom up build was then checked against disclosed transaction value and processing revenue reported by major card networks and issuers. Where the two diverged, the terminal shipment or average selling price assumption feeding the bottom up build was the figure corrected, not the disclosed transaction value.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from NFC enabled device penetration curves across cards, phones and wearables, transit agency open loop conversion schedules, and card issuer reissuance cycles that determine how quickly the installed base turns over. Terminal average selling price is assumed to keep declining as hardware commoditizes, offset by rising attach of software and analytics revenue per terminal. The 2020 and 2021 period is treated as an anomaly: contactless transaction limits were raised in many markets during that window, pulling some adoption forward, and the forecast normalizes for that pull forward rather than extending it as a trend.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Segment level growth for 2020 through 2024 was back tested against realized terminal shipment and card issuance data, and the modeled path was checked for consistency with recorded year over year growth rather than assumed to match it. Analysts reviewed the projected shift in revenue share from hardware toward services and solution for consistency with how processors are actually pricing new deployments. Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmest in the device and hardware segments, where terminal shipment and card issuance figures are widely disclosed by manufacturers, issuers and networks. It is thinner in QR code based acceptance across cash reliant emerging markets, where merchant level reporting is inconsistent and much of the activity runs through domestic schemes with limited public disclosure. The main structural risk is interchange fee regulation: a material cut to interchange revenue in a large market would slow terminal upgrade cycles and could force a downward revision to the hardware and terminal solution segments in particular.
