Market Analysis & Outlook
A CNG cylinder is a pressure vessel engineered to store compressed natural gas at high pressure for use as a vehicle fuel or as fixed storage at a refueling station, built in steel, composite wrapped or fully composite constructions depending on the required weight and pressure rating. Buyers span vehicle manufacturers fitting factory CNG variants, independent conversion centers installing retrofit kits on commercial and passenger vehicles, and refueling station operators and industrial gas users who need stationary or cascade storage. The category covers the cylinder itself along with its valve and mounting hardware, not the vehicle or station equipment it is installed into.
Growth of 7.8% a year carries the global cng cylinders market from USD 2.35 billion in 2025 to USD 4.61 billion in 2034. The full series behind that rate covers USD 1.65 billion in 2020, USD 2.19 billion in 2024, USD 2.53 billion in 2026 and USD 3.42 billion in 2030, with 2025 as the base year.
On the tank type axis, growth rates run from 6.05% for Others up to 8.78% for Cryogenic Tank. Tube Tailored Tank carries the volume: USD 1.22 billion and 51.91% of revenue in 2025, USD 2.49 billion and 54.01% in 2034. Tube Tailored Tank and Cryogenic Tank take share over the period; Stationary Tank and Others give it up while still growing in absolute terms.
By composite type, Steel or Aluminium Alloy accounts for 42.13% of 2025 revenue at USD 0.99 billion, reaching USD 1.57 billion and 34.06% by 2034. Carbon Fibre grows faster at 11.45% against 5.25%, moving from 28.09% of revenue to 37.96% by 2034. This axis divides the same revenue as the tank type split instead of adding to it, so the two are read together and never summed.
Behind these figures sit five regions, four tank type lines and five segmentation axes, each reported for every year from 2020 to 2034. The headline 2025 value is a triangulation of published figures and category proxies, short of a directly sourced total, and the same applies to the segment, regional and country breakdowns drawn from it.
Market Size, 2020–2034
USD BillionRevenue in USD Billion. Values up to 2025 are actuals; 2026–2034 are forecast.
Key Takeaways
- A forecast-period rate of 7.8% takes the market from USD 2.35 billion in 2025 to USD 4.61 billion in 2034, against 7.34% recorded over the 2020-2025 historical period.

Market Trends
Revenue Share, By by tank type
Base year 2025Tube Tailored Tank leads with 51.9% of by tank type segment revenue.
Share of by tank type segment revenue, most recent base year.
Read across the forecast period, the global cng cylinders market shows movement in three places: tank type composition, regional weight, and the 7.8% rate applied to the whole.
All three are changes in mix, not in direction: nothing contracts, and the movement is in which lines and regions absorb the new revenue.
The tank type mix tilts toward Cryogenic Tank. Cryogenic Tank grows at 8.78% across 2026-2034 against 6.05% for Others, the widest spread on the tank type axis. Cryogenic Tank takes its share of revenue from 9.79% to 11.06% while Others gives up ground, from 8.09% to 6.94%. The revenue figures behind that are USD 0.23 billion to USD 0.51 billion and USD 0.19 billion to USD 0.32 billion. Both expand; where a supplier sits on the axis still decides whether it tracks the market.
Every region grows, none at another's expense. Fixed shares against rising totals mean regional strategy here is a question of capturing growth in place, not of winning share from another region, and a regional forecast can be read straight off the global one.
A continuation, not an inflection. Year by year the total runs USD 1.65 billion in 2020, USD 2.19 billion in 2024, USD 2.35 billion in 2025, USD 2.53 billion in 2026, USD 3.42 billion in 2030 and USD 4.61 billion in 2034. The forecast rate of 7.8% sits against 7.34% over the historical period, so the projection extends an observed trend instead of proposing a new one. That moves the planning question away from timing a turn and onto the tank type and regional mixes, where the actual movement is.
Market Growth Factors
The fastest line decides the blended rate
Market Drivers
3- 01The fastest line decides the blended rate
Cryogenic Tank compounds at 8.78% against 7.8% for the market, rising from USD 0.23 billion in 2025 to USD 0.51 billion in 2034 and from 9.79% of revenue to 11.06%. Because the spread to Others at 6.05% is this wide, the headline 7.8% is a weighted result, not a rate any single line achieves. A portfolio weighted away from it tracks below the market even in a market growing everywhere.
- 02Regional weight, not regional count
Together the two account for the majority of both the 2025 base and the revenue added by 2034, which is why a regional plan treating all five regions at equal weight misreads where the growth actually lands.
- 03The trend is already in the record
Revenue rose through USD 1.65 billion in 2020, USD 2.19 billion in 2024 and USD 2.35 billion in 2025, a compound 7.34% across the historical period. From there the forecast carries 7.8% through to USD 4.61 billion in 2034. Fifteen years of unbroken growth in the series means the forecast rests on a demonstrated trajectory, not a projected turnaround, and it is why the 7.8% rate is applied flat across the whole period instead of ramped through it.

Restraints
| # | Restraint | Impact | Estimated reduction (Billion) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Battery-electric competition in passenger and last-mile commercial fleets | Medium-High | −0.08 | Low | Medium | High |
| 2 | Volatile natural gas pricing eroding the cost advantage over gasoline in some markets | Medium | −0.04 | Medium | Low | Low |
| Total | −0.12 | |||||
Drivers contribute 2.38 Billion and restraints remove 0.12 Billion, a net 2.26 Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
The 7.8% forecast rate rests on three things that can be measured separately: the size of the existing base, the mix shift on the tank type axis, and where regional growth is concentrated.
Restraining Factors
What holds the forecast back
Market Restraints
2- 01What holds the forecast back
The bear case assumes battery-electric competition displaces CNG in passenger and last-mile commercial fleets faster than currently planned, and that at least one major market narrows its natural-gas price subsidy, slowing both OEM fitment and retrofit conversion volumes. On that assumption 2034 revenue lands at USD 4.11 billion against the USD 4.61 billion base case, from the same USD 2.35 billion 2025 starting point.
- 02Stationary Tank grows below the market rate
With 30.21% of 2025 revenue (USD 0.71 billion) Stationary Tank is where most of the market sits, and it grows at only 7.01% against the market's 7.8%. Revenue still reaches USD 1.29 billion by 2034 and share still falls to 27.98%: a drag on the average, not a decline.
Market Opportunities
What the bull case turns on
Market Opportunities
2- 01What the bull case turns on
The bull case assumes faster OEM factory-fit rollout and continued government fuel-price support that keeps CNG's cost advantage over gasoline and diesel wide enough to pull retrofit demand above the base case in India, China and Latin America. On that assumption the market reaches USD 5.02 billion by 2034 against USD 4.61 billion in the base case, from the same USD 2.35 billion in 2025.
- 02The opening is on the tank type axis, not the regional one
Cryogenic Tank grows at 8.78% against 7.8% for the market, adding revenue from USD 0.23 billion in 2025 to USD 0.51 billion in 2034 and taking its share from 9.79% to 11.06%. It is the place on this axis where share changes hands at scale, so it is where an entrant can take position without displacing the incumbent in Tube Tailored Tank.
Market Challenges
One tank type line carries the market
Market Challenges
2- 01One tank type line carries the market
With 51.91% of 2025 revenue and 54.01% of 2034 revenue (USD 1.22 billion rising to USD 2.49 billion) Tube Tailored Tank is where the market's exposure sits. No other single change on the tank type axis moves the total as much as a change in demand for that one line.
- 02The United States is 78.8% of North America
The United States generates USD 0.26 billion of North America's USD 0.33 billion in 2025, 78.8% of the region, reaching USD 0.48 billion by 2034. The consequence is that regional risk here is really country risk wearing a larger label.
Segmentation Analysis
5 axesThe global cng cylinders market is cut five ways: by tank type, composite type, vehicle type, application and distribution channel. Each axis cuts the same total revenue along a different commercial dimension, so the splits are alternative views of one market, not additions to it.
Four tank type lines are reported. Two of them take share over the forecast period and the rest give it up, though every line grows in absolute terms between 2025 and 2034.

| Others | $0.19B | 8.1% | $0.32B | 6.9%-1.1 | 6% |
Tube Tailored Tank leads because it is the vehicle mounted format fitted to the largest share of commercial and passenger CNG vehicles, and established manufacturing scale keeps its unit cost lowest among the four formats. Cryogenic Tank grows fastest off a small base as liquefied to compressed gas station buildouts expand in regions adding new fueling infrastructure, a niche but expanding format. By 2034 Tube Tailored Tank is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader. This is the axis the estimation prices in full, year by year, and the one the regional chapters cut against.

Scale in Steel or Aluminium Alloy and Growth in Carbon Fibre Define the Composite type Axis
- Largest Steel or Aluminium Alloy · 42.1%

| Others | $0.09B | 3.8% | $0.18B | 3.9%+0.1 | 8% |
Steel or Aluminium Alloy leads because it carries the longest manufacturing history, the lowest unit cost, and certification already accepted across the widest number of jurisdictions. Carbon Fibre grows fastest as vehicle makers pursue lighter cylinders that tolerate higher fill pressure, letting a factory fit passenger or light commercial model carry more usable range without adding weight. Leadership changes hands: Carbon Fibre is the largest line by 2034, not Steel or Aluminium Alloy.

Passenger Vehicle Outpaces the Axis While Commercial Vehicle Holds the Largest Share
- Largest Commercial Vehicle · 57.9%

| Others | $0.14B | 6% | $0.23B | 5%-1 | 5.7% |
Commercial Vehicle leads because CNG's cost per kilometer advantage compounds over the higher annual mileage that buses, taxis and delivery fleets run, and fleet operators face the strongest regulatory push toward cleaner fuel. Passenger Vehicle is the fastest growing segment as household fuel costs rise and retrofit or factory fit CNG passenger cars become more available. By 2034 Commercial Vehicle is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

| Others | $0.07B | 3% | $0.14B | 3%+0.1 | 8% |
Automotive Fuel Storage leads because vehicle cylinders account for nearly all installed volume, while stationary industrial and power generation storage remain niche uses tied to specific facility fuel switching decisions. Power Generation grows fastest off a small base as distributed generators and backup units increasingly switch from diesel to natural gas storage where pipeline access is limited. By 2034 Automotive Fuel Storage is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

| Aftermarket | $0.85B | 36.2% | $1.48B | 32.1%-4.1 | 6.4% |
OEM fitted systems lead because factory installation carries warranty backing and consistent certification that fleet buyers and regulators favor over retrofit kits. OEM share keeps expanding faster as more vehicle platforms add a factory CNG option, narrowing the retrofit window that aftermarket installers have depended on. OEM remains the largest line through 2034, so the axis changes in proportion, not in order.
Regional Insights
North America Market Analysis
and reaches USD 0.6 billion by 2034. It is a marginal region on this axis, first by revenue throughout the period.
, a shift in share, not in direction: revenue climbs every year while the market's centre of gravity moves elsewhere.
Within the region the tank type split tracks the global one; 51.91% of 2025 revenue in Tube Tailored Tank, fastest growth of 8.78% in Cryogenic Tank. Revenue for North America is broken out by every segmentation axis and by country in the full report.
United States
Sets the pace for North America at 78.8% of it, growing 1.8×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 78.8%
- Of global 11.1%
- Revenue $0.26B → $0.48B
78.8% of North America's base-year revenue comes from the United States; USD 0.26 billion, rising to USD 0.48 billion by 2034. At 78.8% of regional revenue in the base year it is not one market among several, the region's trajectory is largely this country's trajectory. Against regional totals of USD 0.33 billion in 2025 and USD 0.6 billion in 2034, it is the country the full report breaks out in detail.
Demand in the United States follows the tank type mix reported at global level: Tube Tailored Tank is the largest line at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, moving to 54.01% by 2034, while Cryogenic Tank grows fastest at 8.78% and takes its share from 9.79% to 11.06%. Because the country carries 78.8% of North America, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Revenue by tank type for the United States is reported separately in the full report.
In the United States, compressed natural gas cylinders fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Transportation through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, which sets design, manufacture, and requalification requirements for pressure vessels used in vehicle fuel systems. Cylinders intended for on-road vehicles must also meet standards issued by the American National Standards Institute working with the Compressed Gas Association and the NGV fuel systems technical committee. Suppliers must carry DOT-aligned certification markings, undergo periodic hydrostatic testing, and maintain manufacturing quality systems subject to inspection. Vehicle-level installation is reviewed under federal motor vehicle safety standards administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In the United States the field is Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, 3M, Luxfer Group, Cobham Limited, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, CNG United, REL Inc, Time Technoplast Ltd and Steelhead Composites. The commercially relevant division is 51.91% of 2025 revenue in Tube Tailored Tank, where the volume is, against 8.78% growth in Cryogenic Tank, where share moves. The full report covers country-level positioning and shares company by company; this summary does not.
Canada
2nd-largest in North America, growing 1.8×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 15.2%
- Of global 2.1%
- Revenue $0.05B → $0.09B
Within North America, Canada accounts for 15.2% of regional revenue and 2.1% of the global total, worth USD 0.05 billion in 2025 and USD 0.09 billion by 2034.
Europe Market Analysis
and reaches USD 0.46 billion by 2034. It is a marginal region on this axis, second by revenue throughout the period.
, while nothing contracts here; other regions simply grow faster, which shows up as relative weight, not as falling revenue.
Tube Tailored Tank leads here as it does globally, at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, and Cryogenic Tank again grows fastest at 8.78%. Per-axis and per-country detail for Europe sits in the full report.
Italy
Sets the pace for Europe at 60.9% of it, growing 2.0×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 60.9%
- Of global 6%
- Revenue $0.14B → $0.28B
60.9% of Europe's base-year revenue comes from Italy; USD 0.14 billion, rising to USD 0.28 billion by 2034. Carrying 60.9% of the region in the base year, it sets Europe's direction instead of merely contributing to it. Regional revenue of USD 0.23 billion in 2025 and USD 0.46 billion in 2034 sits around it, and it is the country used wherever the full report cuts a figure by geography.
The tank type pattern in Italy is the global one: 51.91% of 2025 revenue in Tube Tailored Tank, 54.01% by 2034, against 8.78% growth in Cryogenic Tank taking it from 9.79% to 11.06%. With 60.9% of Europe concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. Italy carries its own tank type breakdown in the full report.
In Italy, compressed natural gas cylinders are regulated within the European Union framework, chiefly through the Pressure Equipment Directive, which governs design verification, conformity assessment, and CE marking for pressure vessels before they reach the market. Cylinders fitted to vehicles must also satisfy type-approval rules enforced by the Ministero dei Trasporti and aligned with UNECE vehicle fuel-system regulations for gas-powered vehicles. Transport of filled cylinders falls under the ADR agreement governing carriage of dangerous goods by road. Suppliers are expected to hold notified-body certification, apply approved labelling, and support periodic in-service inspection through testing bodies recognised by Italian technical authorities.
The suppliers tracked in this study (Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, 3M, Luxfer Group, Cobham Limited, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, CNG United, REL Inc, Time Technoplast Ltd and Steelhead Composites) compete in Italy across the tank type lines above. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Tube Tailored Tank at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, and taking Cryogenic Tank while it grows at 8.78%.
Germany
2nd-largest in Europe, growing 2.0×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 26.1%
- Of global 2.6%
- Revenue $0.06B → $0.12B
2.6% of global revenue is generated in Germany; USD 0.06 billion in 2025, reaching USD 0.12 billion in 2034, and 26.1% of Europe.
Asia Pacific Market Analysis
rising to USD 1.89 billion in 2034. That makes it the third-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
, and the region keeps growing in absolute terms while others expand faster, a change in relative weight, not a decline in demand.
The tank type mix reported at global level applies here, with Tube Tailored Tank the largest line at 51.91% of 2025 revenue and Cryogenic Tank the fastest-growing at 8.78%. Per-axis and per-country detail for Asia Pacific sits in the full report.
India
The largest market in Asia Pacific, growing 2.2×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 59.6%
- Of global 22.6%
- Revenue $0.53B → $1.17B
The largest single market in Asia Pacific is India, at USD 0.53 billion in 2025 and USD 1.17 billion in 2034. It accounts for 59.6% of regional revenue in the base year, the largest single share without dominating the region outright. Set against USD 0.89 billion and USD 1.89 billion for the region, it is why this market, and not a smaller one, is the one reported in full.
India buys along the same lines as the market globally; Tube Tailored Tank first at 51.91% of 2025 revenue and 54.01% in 2034, Cryogenic Tank fastest at 8.78% on a share moving from 9.79% to 11.06%. Since 59.6% of Asia Pacific's revenue is generated here, the regional numbers inherit this market's mix instead of smoothing it out. Revenue by tank type for India is reported separately in the full report.
In India, gas cylinders used for compressed natural gas fall under the Gas Cylinder Rules administered by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, which approves cylinder design, manufacturing facilities, and periodic testing before a cylinder can be filled or sold. Manufacturers must obtain Bureau of Indian Standards certification confirming conformity with the relevant national standard for CNG cylinder construction and testing. Vehicles fitted with CNG kits require separate approval from the Automotive Research Association of India, acting under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Suppliers must apply statutory markings identifying test history and pressure rating class, and cylinders must be withdrawn from service once their certified life expires.
Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, 3M, Luxfer Group, Cobham Limited, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, CNG United, REL Inc, Time Technoplast Ltd and Steelhead Composites are the suppliers covered in India. Two different problems sit on the same axis: holding Tube Tailored Tank at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, and taking Cryogenic Tank while it grows at 8.78%.
China
2nd-largest in Asia Pacific, growing 2.0×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 30.3%
- Of global 11.5%
- Revenue $0.27B → $0.53B
China is sized at USD 0.27 billion in 2025, rising to USD 0.53 billion by 2034; 11.5% of global revenue and 30.3% of Asia Pacific. It is reported separately from India across every segmentation axis in the full report.
Latin America Market Analysis
rising to USD 0.97 billion in 2034. Among the five regions it ranks fourth by revenue in both years.
, and the region keeps growing in absolute terms while others expand faster, a change in relative weight, not a decline in demand.
Tube Tailored Tank leads here as it does globally, at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, and Cryogenic Tank again grows fastest at 8.78%. The full report breaks Latin America out along every axis and by country.
Argentina
The largest market in Latin America, growing 1.8×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 55.8%
- Of global 12.3%
- Revenue $0.29B → $0.53B
Argentina is the largest market within Latin America, generating USD 0.29 billion in 2025 and projected to reach USD 0.53 billion by 2034. At 55.8% of the region in 2025 it leads, but a majority of Latin America's revenue is generated in other markets. The region itself runs USD 0.52 billion to USD 0.97 billion over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
The tank type pattern in Argentina is the global one: 51.91% of 2025 revenue in Tube Tailored Tank, 54.01% by 2034, against 8.78% growth in Cryogenic Tank taking it from 9.79% to 11.06%. Because the country carries 55.8% of Latin America, a movement in its own mix shows up in the regional totals instead of being averaged away by neighbouring markets. Per-tank type revenue for Argentina appears on its own in the full report.
In Argentina, compressed natural gas cylinders are regulated under the oversight of the Ente Nacional Regulador del Gas, working alongside the Secretaría de Energía, which sets safety requirements for gas conversion equipment and cylinder installation in vehicles. Cylinder manufacture and testing must conform to standards issued by IRAM, the national standards body, covering material specification, hydrostatic testing, and service-life marking. Workshops that install or requalify cylinders must operate under authorisation from the national gas regulator, and cylinders failing inspection must be withdrawn from circulation. Suppliers are expected to maintain traceable certification records and apply approved markings identifying manufacture and retest status.
In Argentina the field is Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, 3M, Luxfer Group, Cobham Limited, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, CNG United, REL Inc, Time Technoplast Ltd and Steelhead Composites. Tube Tailored Tank, at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, is where the volume sits, and Cryogenic Tank, growing at 8.78%, is where position changes hands over the forecast period.
Brazil
2nd-largest in Latin America, growing 1.9×.
- In region 2 of 2
- Of region 34.6%
- Of global 7.7%
- Revenue $0.18B → $0.34B
Brazil is sized at USD 0.18 billion in 2025, rising to USD 0.34 billion by 2034; 7.7% of global revenue and 34.6% of Latin America. It is reported separately from Argentina across every segmentation axis in the full report.
Middle East and Africa Market Analysis
with USD 0.69 billion projected for 2034. That makes it the fifth-largest region covered, in 2025 and again in 2034.
, though revenue still rises throughout; the shift is in the region's weight against faster-growing ones, which is not the same as weakening demand.
Tube Tailored Tank leads here as it does globally, at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, and Cryogenic Tank again grows fastest at 8.78%. The full report breaks Middle East and Africa out along every axis and by country.
Iran
The largest market in Middle East and Africa, growing 1.8×.
- In region 1 of 2
- Of region 50%
- Of global 8.1%
- Revenue $0.19B → $0.35B
50% of Middle East and Africa's base-year revenue comes from Iran; USD 0.19 billion, rising to USD 0.35 billion by 2034. 50% of the region in the base year makes it the largest market here without making it the region. The region itself runs USD 0.38 billion to USD 0.69 billion over the same period, and this is the market carrying the country-level detail in the full report.
Demand in Iran follows the tank type mix reported at global level: Tube Tailored Tank is the largest line at 51.91% of 2025 revenue, moving to 54.01% by 2034, while Cryogenic Tank grows fastest at 8.78% and takes its share from 9.79% to 11.06%. With 50% of Middle East and Africa concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. Revenue by tank type for Iran is reported separately in the full report.
In Iran, compressed natural gas cylinders fall under the technical oversight of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company together with the Ministry of Petroleum, which coordinates conversion and refuelling infrastructure standards. Cylinder design and manufacture must conform to national standards issued by Iran's Standard and Quality Inspection Organisation, covering material grade, construction, and periodic hydrostatic retesting. Vehicles converted to run on compressed natural gas require inspection and certification through authorised conversion centres before registration is accepted. Suppliers are expected to apply approved markings identifying manufacturer and standard conformity, and to withdraw cylinders from service once a facility fails inspection.
In Iran the field is Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, 3M, Luxfer Group, Cobham Limited, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, CNG United, REL Inc, Time Technoplast Ltd and Steelhead Composites. Volume sits in Tube Tailored Tank at 51.91% of 2025 revenue; movement sits in Cryogenic Tank at 8.78% growth.
Egypt

Competitive Landscape
Position on the Tank type Axis Decides Competitive Standing
Suppliers in scope: Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, 3M, Luxfer Group, Cobham Limited, Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies, CNG United, REL Inc, Time Technoplast Ltd and Steelhead Composites.
Where suppliers actually compete is along the tank type axis. Volume sits in Tube Tailored Tank, USD 1.22 billion and 51.91% of 2025 revenue, 54.01% by 2034, which is also where an incumbent is hardest to dislodge. Cryogenic Tank, compounding at 8.78% against 6.05% for Others, is where share changes hands over the forecast period. A supplier positioned in one is not automatically positioned in the other, so a field of this size stays viable in a market of USD 2.35 billion.
Scale in cylinder manufacturing and pressure-vessel certification across multiple regulatory regimes separates the largest suppliers, since a Type IV composite design approved in one jurisdiction still needs separate certification elsewhere before it can be sold. Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries and Luxfer Group compete on that certification breadth plus long-run supply contracts with OEMs and fleet operators. Regional manufacturers such as Everest Kanto Cylinder and Time Technoplast compete on lower-cost steel and Type II construction, proximity to domestic conversion centers, and faster delivery into price-sensitive retrofit markets, not on composite-material scale.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
The estimate is built upward from cylinder unit volumes: OEM fitment counts reported by commercial and passenger vehicle programs, retrofit kit installations tracked through conversion-center throughput, and industrial cascade unit shipments for station storage. Each volume line is priced at the realized average selling price for its construction type, since a Type IV carbon fibre cylinder and a Type I steel cylinder carry materially different price points even at the same water capacity. The resulting build is checked against revenue disclosed by Hexagon Agility, Worthington Industries, Luxfer Group and other listed suppliers in their segment reporting. Where the bottom-up total diverged from disclosed revenue, the correction was made to the unit-price or fitment-rate assumption driving the gap, not by averaging the two figures together.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Interviews target the roles that actually set cylinder specification and purchase timing: fleet procurement managers at bus and taxi operators, OEM powertrain and platform engineers deciding whether a model gets a factory CNG variant, conversion-center owners who install retrofit kits, and the station operators and regulators who set fill-pressure and certification standards. Sampling weights toward India, China, Argentina, Brazil, Iran and Egypt, the geographies where CNG vehicle penetration and cylinder replacement cycles are highest, with a smaller sample in North America and Europe to capture transit-fleet and industrial-storage buyers where CNG vehicle share is lower but cylinder specification requirements differ.
Desk research draws on national vehicle registration and conversion-kit certification registers in India, Pakistan and Argentina, where CNG retrofit approval is centrally logged; the ANP fuel-distribution database in Brazil; customs trade data filed under the HS code covering compressed-gas cylinders; and cylinder testing and re-qualification standards published by ISO and regional pressure-vessel authorities that set the replacement cycle assumption. Supplier 10-K and annual-report segment disclosures from Worthington Industries, Luxfer Group and Hexagon Agility supply the top-down revenue check, and natural-gas retail pricing series from national energy ministries anchor the fuel-cost-advantage assumption behind the demand forecast.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast carries forward the fitment-rate and retrofit-cycle assumptions from the sizing build, adjusted for the pace of factory CNG model additions already announced by OEMs and the station-network expansion plans disclosed by national gas utilities. Pricing assumes a gradual mix shift toward Type III and Type IV composite cylinders as their price premium over steel narrows, not a sudden step change. The one anomaly normalised for is Iran's cylinder replacement backlog, which briefly depressed disclosed volumes in the historical period; that year is treated as an outlier, not a new baseline. The forecast holds only if a major CNG market does not reverse its fuel-price subsidy.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Back-testing compared the bottom-up build's implied 2020-2024 growth against recorded vehicle registration and cylinder re-qualification volumes in India, Argentina and Egypt, the three markets with the most complete historical series. Segment shifts, particularly the move from steel toward composite cylinders, were reviewed against manufacturers' own capacity-expansion announcements to confirm the pace is supply-constrained, not assumption-driven. Sensitivities were run on the natural-gas-to-gasoline price spread and on the OEM factory-fit adoption rate, the two inputs most likely to move the forecast, and the published base case sits inside the range both sensitivities produced.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmest in the commercial vehicle and OEM fitment segments in India and China, where registration and certification data are current and complete. It is thinner in the Middle East and Africa split, where Iran's disclosure is limited and Egypt's conversion-program data lags by more than a year, and in the industrial and power-generation application, which has no dedicated registry and rests on adjacent gas-storage analogues. A structural risk that would force a revision is a sudden shift in national fuel subsidies, which has repriced CNG's cost advantage abruptly in past cycles.
