Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The market was built upward from cultivated chokeberry acreage across Poland, the American Midwest and other producing regions, converted into fresh berry tonnage using regional yield-per-hectare figures, then reduced to extract output using standard juice and powder conversion ratios. Realized prices per kilogram of powder, liquid concentrate and capsule-grade extract were applied by form and by organic or conventional grade to reach a bottom-up revenue figure for each segment. That build was checked against the disclosed revenue and shipment volumes of the largest processors and cooperatives active in aronia extraction. Where the two diverged, the acreage or yield assumption was revised rather than the disclosed company figures, since planted area and conversion ratios carry more year-to-year estimation risk than a processor's own reported shipments.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary interviews target procurement managers at food and beverage manufacturers who specify chokeberry extract as a functional ingredient, supplement formulators sourcing polyphenol-standardized powder, and commercial leads at cooperatives and processing facilities in the main growing regions. Regulatory contacts in food-safety and dietary-supplement approval bodies were included to confirm how labeling and health-claim rules shape demand by application. Sampling weights Poland and the broader Central European growing belt alongside the United States, reflecting where cultivation, processing and early-stage demand are concentrated, with a smaller share of contacts in East Asian markets where nutraceutical import demand is expanding fastest. Distributor and specialty retailer contacts were used to cross-check channel-level pricing and availability.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on Poland's national agricultural statistics office for chokeberry planted area and harvest tonnage, EU Common Agricultural Policy crop registers covering the main Central European producing states, and US Department of Agriculture specialty crop reporting for Midwest acreage. Customs trade data under the HS code covering dried and preserved berry products was used to estimate cross-border extract and concentrate shipments. Food-safety and novel-food registration filings in the European Union and the United States were checked for chokeberry-derived ingredient approvals by application. Trade association benchmarks from European berry grower cooperatives supplemented company-level pricing where public filings were unavailable.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected growth in functional food and beverage reformulation toward natural antioxidant ingredients, the expansion rate of dietary supplement manufacturing capacity in North America and East Asia, and continued acreage expansion in the main growing regions. Pricing is assumed to stay firm rather than fall, since chokeberry supply remains concentrated in a small number of growing regions with limited near-term capacity to expand faster than demand. The 2020-2021 period is normalized for the temporary surge in immunity-focused ingredient demand rather than treated as a new baseline. For the forecast to hold, cultivation area must expand roughly in line with current planting trends and no major substitute antioxidant ingredient must undercut chokeberry on price at scale.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against recorded historical growth in aronia-derived ingredient shipments from 2020 through 2024 to confirm the bottom-up build reproduces observed trends before being extended forward. Segment-level shifts, including the gradual move from conventional to organic-certified extract and from bulk powder toward capsule-ready formats, were reviewed against category-level growth reported by supplement manufacturers. Sensitivities were tested on harvest yield, since chokeberry cultivation is more weather-exposed than many established fruit crops, and on the pace of organic-certification conversion, which directly affects the organic-conventional split. Regional shares were checked against known cultivation geography to confirm no region's share implied acreage inconsistent with its reported planted area.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is strongest for the food and beverage application and for the Polish and North American cultivation base, where acreage and processor shipment data are directly observable. It is weaker for the capsule and tablet form and for Asia Pacific demand, where reporting is thinner and adoption depends on how quickly formulators substitute chokeberry for more established antioxidant ingredients. The organic share carries the most estimation risk, since certification conversion is gradual and not consistently reported across growing regions. A material shift in substitute-ingredient pricing or an unexpected harvest shortfall in the main producing regions would be the most likely source of a future revision.
