Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The build starts from volumes and prices. For each cannabinoid, CDI estimates the kilograms of isolate, distillate and finished product moving through licensed channels, using hemp acreage and biomass yield data, licensed cultivation and processing capacity, and pharmaceutical prescription volumes, then multiplies by realised prices for each grade and product form. Those product-level builds are summed by region and country. The result is checked against revenue disclosed by the listed producers, retailers and drug makers named in the study, after removing non-cannabinoid revenue such as flower, devices and unrelated pharmaceutical lines. Where the two disagree, the bottom-up assumption on volume, yield or price is the item corrected; the disclosed figure is never averaged in.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Bottom-up sequence

Apply take-up

4
Apply realised price
Reconciliation sequence

4
Correct the assumption

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target the roles that see volume and price directly: sales and procurement leads at extractors and refiners, formulation and regulatory affairs heads at pharmaceutical and nutraceutical brands, buyers at pharmacy chains and licensed retailers, cultivation and processing operators, contract manufacturers, and consultants who advise on licensing and compliance. Conversations also cover clinicians who prescribe cannabinoid medicines and compliance officers at testing laboratories. Sampling emphasises North America and Europe, where regulated sales and prescription volumes are best documented, and gives deliberate weight to Asia Pacific and Latin America, where legal frameworks are newer and producers are fewer. Findings are used to test unit, price and channel assumptions.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on the US Food and Drug Administration drug approval database and its guidance on hemp-derived products, the European Medicines Agency register, the EU Novel Food catalogue, and Health Canada licensing and sales data. Production and trade inputs come from USDA hemp acreage and production surveys, the customs code for tetrahydrocannabinols (HS 2932.95) and extracts under HS 1302.19, and state regulator sales dashboards in Colorado, California and Washington. Company inputs come from annual reports, 10-K filings and SEDAR+ filings of the listed producers, supplemented by trade body benchmarks from hemp and cannabis industry associations and peer reviewed clinical literature on cannabinoid therapies.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from segment volumes and prices, then summed. Demand drivers include wider pharmaceutical approvals and prescribing, adult-use and hemp legalisation, and the shift of consumer wellness spend toward cannabinoid products. Supply drivers include lower extraction cost and the scale-up of fermentation based minor cannabinoids. The price per kilogram of CBD isolate is assumed to stabilise after years of decline, with growth coming from higher value minor cannabinoids and finished products. The forecast holds if US federal policy on hemp-derived products stays permissive, European novel food approvals proceed, and no major safety finding restricts use. Historical biomass oversupply is normalised before projection.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against recorded growth in listed company revenue and regulated retail sales for 2020 to 2024, and the base year was reconciled to the bottom-up volume and price build. Segment shifts, notably the rise of minor cannabinoids and synthetic supply, were reviewed with industry experts. Sensitivities tested include an upward and downward change in realised price per kilogram, a delay of one year in key regulatory decisions, and a change in the share of hemp-derived volume that reaches regulated channels. Regional totals and country figures were reconciled to the global total, and each segmentation axis was checked to add to the scope total in both 2025 and 2034.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is strongest in pharmaceutical prescription revenue and in regulated North American retail, where sales are reported by regulators and listed companies. It is weaker in unregulated and grey channels, in Asia Pacific and Latin America where reporting is thin, and in minor cannabinoids such as CBN and CBC where commercial volumes are small and prices vary widely. Structural risks that would force a revision include a change in US federal rules for hemp-derived products, a restrictive European novel food ruling, and persistent biomass oversupply. A fair band around the base year runs from ten to fifteen percent either way.
