Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary input comes from structured conversations with security architects and CISOs who own the isolation purchase decision, procurement and IT-security budget holders who set per-seat spending ceilings, channel partners and managed security service providers who resell isolation into mid-market accounts, and compliance officers in banking and government bodies who set the control requirements isolation is bought to satisfy. Sampling weights North America and Europe, where disclosed deployments are most mature and easiest to corroborate, with a smaller but growing share of conversations in Asia Pacific to capture the region's earlier-stage but faster-moving adoption curve.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on the security-segment disclosures inside public filings and investor-day materials of vendors with a browser-isolation or SSE product line, national cybersecurity-agency advisories such as CISA's guidance on browser-based threat vectors, government procurement and tender records for security-software contracts in BFSI and public-sector accounts, and benchmark survey data published by industry bodies such as the Cloud Security Alliance on security-control adoption. These are read alongside vendor product documentation to confirm which isolation technique and deployment mode a given disclosure actually covers, since bundled SASE reporting rarely separates isolation revenue on its own line.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from three moving assumptions: the pace at which enterprises complete a zero-trust or SASE rollout that isolation sits inside, the rate at which phishing and web-based malware incidents keep pushing browsing risk onto the security team's agenda, and the direction of per-seat pricing as cloud delivery lowers unit cost while total seats licensed keeps rising. The 2020-2021 jump tied to the sudden shift to remote work is treated as a one-off pull-forward rather than a trend to extrapolate. For the forecast to hold, incident-driven demand needs to keep growing broadly in line with its recent pace rather than plateauing once early adopters are covered.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against the recorded 2020-2024 growth of vendors with disclosed browser-isolation or adjacent SSE revenue, checking that the unit-based build reproduces their actual reported trajectory. Segment-share shifts across deployment mode, enterprise size and end-use industry were reviewed with channel partners who sell into those accounts day to day, confirming a share movement matches what they see in live deals and is not simply an artefact of the underlying assumptions. Sensitivities were run on per-seat price erosion and seat-count growth, the two inputs the forecast is most exposed to, to see how far the 2034 total moves under slower or faster assumptions on each.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest on the cloud-versus-on-premise split for large enterprises, where deployment choices are visible in vendor disclosures and channel reporting. It is thinner on small and mid-sized enterprise uptake outside North America and Europe, where isolation spending is often folded into a broader security-software line with no separate reporting, and on the application-level split between phishing prevention and data-loss prevention, which vendors frequently bundle into one feature set. A structural risk to watch is further bundling of isolation into wider SASE platforms, which would make the standalone revenue this estimate tracks harder to isolate in vendor disclosures going forward.
