Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

Market size was built upward from unit volumes rather than assumed from published revenue. Elemental bromine tonnage was estimated by combining Dead Sea, Jordanian, US Arkansas and Chinese brine extraction capacity with reported utilization rates, then split into derivative streams, organobromine flame retardants, clear brine completion fluids and hydrogen bromide, using typical conversion ratios for each route. Realised prices were applied per derivative and per grade, since pharmaceutical-grade material commands a materially higher price than bulk industrial-grade bromine. The resulting revenue build was checked against disclosed segment or company revenue from the largest integrated producers; where the bottom-up figure diverged, the extraction-capacity or price assumption was revisited and corrected rather than averaging the two figures together.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary interviews target commercial and procurement leads at flame-retardant compounders, oilfield service and completion-fluid buyers, agrochemical and pharmaceutical formulators, and water-treatment operators, the roles that set contract volumes and negotiate price against posted bromine and derivative rates. Regulatory and EHS contacts at these same organizations were consulted on how flame-retardant and water-treatment approvals are shifting demand toward or away from brominated chemistries. Distributor and trader contacts supplement this where direct producer contracts do not cover smaller regional buyers. Sampling weights toward China, the United States, Israel, Jordan and India, the geographies that combine the largest extraction capacity with the largest derivative-consuming manufacturing bases, with lighter coverage of Latin American and African buyers reflecting their smaller share of global demand.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on national customs and trade-code data filed under HS code 2801 (bromine) and related derivative codes, US Geological Survey mineral commodity summaries for bromine, Israeli and Jordanian mining and export-permit disclosures covering Dead Sea extraction, and published flame-retardant regulatory registers, including REACH restriction listings and IEC/UL flammability standards that shape which brominated compounds remain permitted in electronics and construction materials. Producer 10-K, annual-report and investor-presentation disclosures from the largest listed suppliers were used to check segment revenue and capacity figures, alongside oilfield-services completion-fluid procurement data and water-treatment industry benchmarks published by trade associations covering disinfection chemical demand.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast carries forward flame-retardant regulatory adoption curves already in force in the European Union, United States and China, rather than assuming a step change, and applies a normalized recovery to oil and gas drilling activity that removes the 2020-2021 pandemic-driven completion-fluid demand collapse as a one-off rather than a trend. Water-treatment demand growth is tied to municipal and industrial disinfection capacity additions already announced or under construction. Pricing is held to a gradual real-terms increase consistent with rising extraction and environmental-compliance cost at Dead Sea and Arkansas brine operations. The forecast holds only if flame-retardant chemistries are not subject to a broad new restriction beyond what regulators have already proposed.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against recorded bromine trade volumes and producer capacity utilization for 2020 through 2024 to confirm the historical build reproduces observed, not merely modelled, growth. Segment-share shifts, particularly the gradual move toward organobromine flame retardants and away from oil and gas drilling as the largest single application, were reviewed against analysts and formulators familiar with those specific end markets rather than accepted on trend alone. Sensitivities were run on brine extraction-capacity utilization, flame-retardant regulatory timing and drilling activity, the three inputs most capable of moving the forecast, to confirm the base case does not depend on a single favorable assumption holding across the full study period.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmest for organobromine flame-retardant demand and for Dead Sea and Arkansas extraction capacity, where production and regulatory data are frequently disclosed. It is weaker for pharmaceutical-grade and cosmetics end-use volumes, which are rarely broken out separately by buyers, and for China-origin production, where capacity and utilization figures are inconsistently reported. The main structural risk is a faster-than-assumed regulatory restriction on brominated flame retardants in the European Union or China, which would compress the largest single demand pool ahead of the substitution pace assumed here; a slower oilfield drilling recovery is the secondary risk.
