Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from the hectares of rice, turf, and other grass-prone land treated with bispyribac sodium each year, combined with technical-grade application rates per hectare and realised prices per litre or kilogram across suspension concentrate, water dispersible granule, and wettable powder formulations. Treated-area volumes are derived separately for the major rice-growing geographies sized in this report and for turf and non-crop programs, then priced using distributor price points specific to each region instead of a single global average. This build is checked against the disclosed crop-protection revenue of branded suppliers and against customs-declared export values for technical-grade material from Chinese and Indian manufacturers; where the two diverge, the treated-area or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build is corrected.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target a mix of commercial and regulatory roles: crop protection product managers at formulator and distributor companies, procurement leads at large farm cooperatives and integrated agribusinesses, registration and regulatory affairs staff tracking re-registration status in major rice-growing jurisdictions, and channel managers at agricultural input retail networks. Turf and non-crop demand is checked separately through golf course and sports-turf maintenance buyers. Geographic sampling emphasises China, India, and the Southeast Asian rice-growing countries, alongside the United States rice belt and southern Europe, where registration status and treated-area trends look different from the Asian core of the market.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on the EU Pesticides Database for European registration status, the US EPA's pesticide product label system for United States registrations of bispyribac sodium products, China's ICAMA technical registration listings, and India's Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee registered-product list. Rice planted-area and yield trends come from USDA NASS statistics and FAOSTAT country-level production data. Cross-border flows of technical-grade material are checked against customs trade data filed under the relevant pyrimidine-based agrochemical HS codes. Branded-supplier crop protection segment disclosures and industry association planting-intentions reports round out the desk research base.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from country-level rice planted-area trends and an assumption about the pace at which direct-seeded rice cultivation continues replacing transplanted rice across South and Southeast Asia, since that shift changes the timing and intensity of herbicide application compared with transplanting-based systems. Turf-market growth is modeled from announced golf course and sports-field development pipelines instead of a simple historical trend extension. Price assumptions build in gradual erosion as additional generic technical suppliers enter, offset partly by a formulation-mix shift toward higher-value granule products. The forecast holds if planted rice area in the largest producing countries does not contract and re-registration timelines in major markets do not lengthen materially.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs were back-tested against recorded rice planted-area and crop-protection spending growth over 2020 to 2024 in the countries sized individually in this report. Segment-share shifts between rice, turf, and other field-crop use, and between formulation types, were reviewed with agronomic and channel contacts familiar with regional application practices. Sensitivities were tested around two variables: the pace of generic technical price erosion and the length of re-registration delays in the largest markets, since both directly affect realised revenue independent of treated-area growth. Country-level splits outside the markets sized individually were checked only for directional consistency against regional planted-area shares, without assigning them independent confidence.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

The estimate is firmest for rice-use volumes in China, India, and the United States, where planted-area and registration data are well documented and relatively current. It is least firm for smallholder turf and non-crop uptake in newer markets, and for country-level splits outside the countries sized individually in this report, where reporting is thin or absent. The clearest structural risk is generic technical price erosion outpacing treated-area growth, which would compress revenue even in a scenario where treated hectares continue to expand across the major rice-growing regions.
