Market Analysis & Outlook
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing covers the instruments, reagents, consumables and software used to determine which antibiotics, antifungals, antivirals or antiparasitic agents will inhibit a specific pathogen isolated from a patient or environmental sample. It spans manual phenotypic methods such as disk diffusion and broth microdilution, automated instrument platforms, and genotypic methods that detect resistance genes directly, along with the data management systems that report results back into a laboratory or hospital record system. Buyers include hospital and reference clinical laboratories, public health and surveillance agencies, pharmaceutical and biotechnology developers testing new antimicrobial candidates, and food, water and veterinary testing laboratories.
Between 2025 and 2034 the global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market moves from USD 4.65 billion to USD 9.68 billion, compounding at 8.5% a year. Fifteen years are covered in all, taking in USD 3.19 billion in 2020, USD 4.31 billion in 2024, USD 5.04 billion in 2026 and USD 6.99 billion in 2030.
The product type mix shifts over the period. Reagents & Consumables is the largest line in 2025 at USD 1.77 billion, a 38.1% share, moving to USD 3.48 billion and 36% by 2034. Software & Data Management Systems grows fastest at 13.7%, taking its share from 4.7% to 8.1%, while Manual & Non-Automated Instruments (Incubators, Readers) grows slowest at 3.6%. Automated & Semi-Automated AST Instruments, Software & Data Management Systems and Testing Services take share over the period; Reagents & Consumables and Manual & Non-Automated Instruments (Incubators, Readers) give it up while still growing in absolute terms.
Cut by test method / technology, the largest line is Automated Broth Microdilution Systems: 24.1% of 2025 revenue, worth USD 1.12 billion, and 25% at USD 2.42 billion by 2034. Genotypic / Molecular AST grows faster at 12.9% against 9%, moving from 14% of revenue to 20% by 2034. Both this axis and the product type one divide the same revenue, which is why they are alternative views, not components.
The regional order runs from North America at 40.2% of 2025 revenue down to Middle East and Africa at 3.7%. North America is worth USD 1.87 billion in 2025 and USD 3.4 billion in 2034; Europe, second at 26%, moves from USD 1.21 billion to USD 2.32 billion. Share shifts toward Asia Pacific and Latin America over the forecast period, so the regional split repays a close reading.
Coverage extends to five regions, five product type lines and nine segmentation axes over the full fifteen years. The 2025 total itself is triangulated from published sources and category proxies, with no independently sourced count behind it, and the splits below are estimated on that same basis, a bound on their precision worth carrying into any use of them.
Market Size, 2020–2034
USD BillionRevenue in USD Billion. Values up to 2025 are actuals; 2026–2034 are forecast.
Key Takeaways
- Revenue grows from USD 4.65 billion in 2025 to USD 9.68 billion in 2034, a compound annual rate of 8.5%, having reached USD 4.31 billion in 2024 from USD 3.19 billion in 2020.
- The largest line by product type is Reagents & Consumables, worth USD 1.77 billion and 38.1% of revenue in 2025, rising to USD 3.48 billion and 36% by 2034.
- Fastest growth on the product type axis belongs to Software & Data Management Systems: 13.7% a year, USD 0.22 billion to USD 0.78 billion, and a share moving from 4.7% to 8.1%.
- The bull case puts 2034 revenue at USD 10.84 billion and the bear case at USD 8.52 billion, either side of the USD 9.68 billion base case, each with its own stated assumption in the full report.
- North America holds 40.2% of global revenue in 2025 at USD 1.87 billion, the largest of the five regions tracked, and reaches USD 3.4 billion by 2034.
- 86.6% of North America's base-year revenue comes from the United States alone: USD 1.62 billion in 2025, rising to USD 2.96 billion by 2034, which is why it is that region's worked example.
- Fifteen years are reported, 2020 to 2034 with 2025 as the base: revenue, share and growth rate per line, per axis and per region, not as a single blended series.
Market Trends
Revenue Share, By product type
Base year 2025Reagents & Consumables leads with 38.1% of product type segment revenue.
Share of product type segment revenue, most recent base year.
The global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market is shaped over 2026-2034 by three measurable movements: a change in the product type mix, a shift in where revenue sits geographically, and the 8.5% rate carrying the total.
All three are changes in mix, not in direction: nothing contracts, and the movement is in which lines and regions absorb the new revenue.
Software & Data Management Systems grows at more than twice the pace of Manual & Non-Automated Instruments (Incubators, Readers). 13.7% against 3.6%: that gap, between Software & Data Management Systems and Manual & Non-Automated Instruments (Incubators, Readers), is the largest on the product type axis. Software & Data Management Systems takes its share of revenue from 4.7% to 8.1% while Manual & Non-Automated Instruments (Incubators, Readers) gives up ground, from 12% to 8%. Neither contracts: USD 0.22 billion becomes USD 0.78 billion, USD 0.56 billion becomes USD 0.77 billion. What the spread decides is which of them a supplier's revenue is exposed to.
Growth concentrates in Asia Pacific and Latin America. Asia Pacific moves from 24.7% of revenue in 2025 to 31.8% in 2034, worth USD 1.15 billion rising to USD 3.08 billion; Latin America moves from 5.4% of revenue in 2025 to 5.5% in 2034, worth USD 0.25 billion rising to USD 0.53 billion. Against that, North America at 40.2% moving to 35.1%, Europe at 26% moving to 24%, Middle East and Africa at 3.7% moving to 3.6%, a fall in share, not in revenue. That makes the regional split worth reading directly instead of scaling from the global rate: the same market rate produces different outcomes depending on where a supplier's revenue sits.
Fifteen years without a discontinuity. Year by year the total runs USD 3.19 billion in 2020, USD 4.31 billion in 2024, USD 4.65 billion in 2025, USD 5.04 billion in 2026, USD 6.99 billion in 2030 and USD 9.68 billion in 2034. Against 7.83% through the historical period, the 8.5% forecast rate is a continuation; no year in the series interrupts it. A plan built on this market is therefore a plan about capturing a share of steady expansion, which is decided on the product type and regional axes, not by the headline rate.
Market Growth Factors
The fastest line decides the blended rate
Market Drivers
3- 01The fastest line decides the blended rate
The fastest line on the product type axis is Software & Data Management Systems, at 13.7% against the market's 8.5%, taking USD 0.22 billion to USD 0.78 billion and 4.7% of revenue to 8.1%. Set against 3.6% at the other end of the axis, this is the line that decides whether the market's 8.5% holds. A portfolio weighted away from it tracks below the market even in a market growing everywhere.
- 02Regional weight, not regional count
40.2% of 2025 revenue (USD 1.87 billion) is generated in North America, reaching USD 3.4 billion by 2034 at an unchanged 35.1%. Europe is next at 26% of revenue, USD 1.21 billion in 2025 and USD 2.32 billion in 2034. Because both the existing revenue and the revenue added concentrate in these two, regional weighting matters more to a forecast than regional count does.
- 03The trend is already in the record
USD 3.19 billion in 2020, USD 4.31 billion in 2024 and USD 4.65 billion in 2025: 7.83% compound growth before the forecast period even begins. From there the forecast carries 8.5% through to USD 9.68 billion in 2034. With the trajectory already demonstrated over fifteen years, what remains uncertain is the mix, not the direction, which is where the segment and regional sections do the work.
Growth drivers
| # | Growth driver | Impact | Gross contribution (USD Billion) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rising global antimicrobial resistance driving routine susceptibility testing volume | High | +1.65 | High | High | High |

| 5 | Rising diagnostic testing infrastructure investment in emerging markets | Medium | +0.55 | Low | Medium | Medium |
| 6 | Others | Low | +0.33 | Low | Low | Low |
| Total | +5.43 | |||||
Restraints
| # | Restraint | Impact | Estimated reduction (USD Billion) | 2026-28 | 2029-31 | 2032-34 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Reimbursement and cost pressure on routine culture-based testing in price-sensitive settings | Medium | −0.22 | Medium | Medium | Medium |
| 2 | Laboratory staffing shortages limiting testing throughput in some regions | Medium | −0.12 | Medium | Low | Low |
| 3 | Slower regulatory clearance pathways for novel rapid AST platforms in some markets | Low | −0.06 | Low | Low | Low |
| Total | −0.4 | |||||
Drivers contribute 5.43 USD Billion and restraints remove 0.4 USD Billion, a net 5.03 USD Billion, which is the revenue the market adds between the base year and 2034. Contributions are CDI estimates, apportioned so that they reconcile with the forecast rather than being read from it.
Growth in the global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market comes from three measurable sources over 2026-2034: the market's own compounding at 8.5%, the share gained by faster-growing product type lines, and expansion in the regions taking a larger part of global revenue.
Restraining Factors
What holds the forecast back
Market Restraints
2- 01What holds the forecast back
Where the forecast could miss: bear case assumes public health testing budgets tighten, slowing the replacement of manual methods and delaying planned national surveillance program expansions. That path reaches USD 8.52 billion by 2034 instead of USD 9.68 billion, off an unchanged USD 4.65 billion in 2025.
- 02Reagents & Consumables grows below the market rate
Reagents & Consumables carries 38.1% of 2025 revenue at USD 1.77 billion but compounds at 7.9% against 8.5% for the market, taking its share to 36% by 2034 even as revenue rises to USD 3.48 billion. Because it carries that much of the base, its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it.
Market Opportunities
Upside case: USD 10.84 billion by 2034
Market Opportunities
2- 01Upside case: USD 10.84 billion by 2034
The upside path assumes bull case assumes AMR surveillance mandates expand faster than currently legislated and automated or molecular platform adoption reaches mid-sized hospital laboratories a year or two ahead of the base case. It ends 2034 at USD 10.84 billion against a USD 9.68 billion base case, off the same USD 4.65 billion base year.
- 02Software & Data Management Systems share moves from 4.7% to 8.1%
Share on the product type axis moves toward Software & Data Management Systems, from 4.7% in 2025 to 8.1% in 2034, on 13.7% growth against the market's 8.5% and revenue rising from USD 0.22 billion to USD 0.78 billion. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds Reagents & Consumables, which is the harder and more expensive fight.
Market Challenges
One product type line carries the market
Market Challenges
2- 01One product type line carries the market
Reagents & Consumables is 38.1% of 2025 revenue at USD 1.77 billion and still 36% at USD 3.48 billion in 2034. A market leaning this heavily on one product type line concentrates its exposure there, and a shift in demand for that line moves the total more than any other single change on the axis.
- 02North America is largely the United States
The United States generates USD 1.62 billion of North America's USD 1.87 billion in 2025, 86.6% of the region, reaching USD 2.96 billion by 2034. Read as a region it looks diversified; read by weight it is not, and the regional forecast inherits whatever happens in that one market.
Segmentation Analysis
9 axesThe market is divided by product type and by test method / technology, organism type tested, application, sample/specimen type, end user, testing site / care setting, distribution channel and testing standard / breakpoint guideline; nine axes in all. Each axis cuts the same total revenue along a different commercial dimension, so the splits are alternative views of one market, not additions to it.
All five product type lines expand in revenue terms over the forecast period. Share is the dividing line; three take it, the others cede it.

| Testing Services | $0.84B | 18.1% | $1.84B | 19%+0.9 | 9.2% |
Reagents & Consumables lead because laboratories consume a fresh reagent, panel or strip with every test performed, so revenue tracks testing volume directly instead of one-time capital purchases; Software & Data Management Systems grow fastest as laboratories digitize resistance-gene reporting and connect results into hospital and public-health surveillance systems that previously relied on manual, paper-based transcription. By 2034 Reagents & Consumables is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader. Every year of the series is priced on this axis, making it the reference cut for the rest of the report.

| EUCAST-Based Testing | $1.67B | 35.9% | $3.78B | 39%+3.1 | 9.5% |
| Other National/Regional Standards | $0.47B | 10.1% | $0.87B | 9%-1.1 | 7.1% |
CLSI-Based Testing leads because it remains the default breakpoint standard across North America and much of Asia Pacific's laboratory networks; EUCAST-Based Testing grows fastest as European harmonization and a growing number of Asian and Latin American laboratories adopt EUCAST breakpoints alongside or in place of CLSI for regulatory and publication consistency. By 2034 CLSI-Based Testing is still ahead, making this a shift in weight, not a change of leader.

Antimicrobial susceptibility testing systems sold in the United States are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as in vitro diagnostic devices. Most instruments and their associated panels, cards, or discs are cleared through the premarket notification pathway administered by the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, with breakpoint interpretations expected to align with recognized standards such as those published by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Manufacturers must operate under a quality management system consistent with FDA requirements, maintain traceability of reagents and controls, and submit to establishment registration and device listing. Labelling must state intended use, specimen type, and performance characteristics established through clinical and analytical validation studies. Laboratories running these assays domestically also operate within the oversight of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments framework, which governs personnel qualifications and proficiency testing for the diagnostic category as a whole.
In the United States the field is bioMérieux SA, Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), Danaher Corporation (Beckman Coulter / Cepheid), Remel / Oxoid (formerly Thermo Fisher Scientific Microbiology, now an independent Astorg portfolio company), Bruker Corporation, QIAGEN N.V., Accelerate Diagnostics, Inc., T2 Biosystems, Inc., Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., Merck KGaA (MilliporeSigma), Roche Diagnostics (F. - Of region 28.1%
- Of global 7.3%
- Revenue $0.34M → $0.64M
28.1% of Europe's base-year revenue comes from Germany; USD 0.34 billion, rising to USD 0.64 billion by 2034. Its 28.1% of base-year regional revenue leads the region, though enough sits elsewhere that Europe is not a proxy for it. Set against USD 1.21 billion and USD 2.32 billion for the region, it is why this market, and not a smaller one, is the one reported in full.
The product type pattern in Germany is the global one: 38.1% of 2025 revenue in Reagents & Consumables, 36% by 2034, against 13.7% growth in Software & Data Management Systems taking it from 4.7% to 8.1%. With 28.1% of Europe concentrated here, a change in this country's mix is visible in the regional figures instead of being diluted by its neighbours. Per-product type revenue for Germany appears on its own in the full report.
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing products placed on the German market fall under the EU In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation, which classifies devices by risk and assigns most susceptibility testing systems to a higher-risk category given their role in guiding antimicrobial therapy. Conformity is demonstrated through a notified body assessment and results in CE marking, supported by a technical file covering analytical performance, clinical evidence, and risk management. Manufacturers must appoint an authorized representative if based outside the European Union, register with the appropriate national authority, and comply with the German Medical Device Law, which implements the regulation domestically. Labelling and instructions for use must be provided in German and must specify intended use, limitations, and traceability to recognized reference methods such as those set by the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing. Post-market surveillance obligations, including vigilance reporting, apply once a device is placed on the market.

Competitive Landscape
Scale in Reagents & Consumables and Growth in Software & Data Management Systems Set the Terms of Competition
Suppliers in scope: bioMérieux SA, Becton, Dickinson and Company (BD), Danaher Corporation (Beckman Coulter / Cepheid), Remel / Oxoid (formerly Thermo Fisher Scientific Microbiology, now an independent Astorg portfolio company), Bruker Corporation, QIAGEN N.V., Accelerate Diagnostics, Inc., T2 Biosystems, Inc., Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc., Merck KGaA (MilliporeSigma), Roche Diagnostics (F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd), Hardy Diagnostics, Liofilchem S.r.l., Alifax S.r.l., HiMedia Laboratories Pvt. Ltd., Creative Diagnostics, Selux Diagnostics, Inc., Autobio Diagnostics Co., Ltd., Werfen (Instrumentation Laboratory), Rapid Micro Biosystems, Inc., Diatron MI Zrt., Neogen Corporation, Abbott Laboratories and Coris BioConcept.
Competition follows the product type split, not the regional one. The largest block of revenue is Reagents & Consumables: USD 1.77 billion in 2025 at 38.1% of the total, 36% in 2034. Incumbency there is expensive to challenge. Movement is concentrated in Software & Data Management Systems; 13.7% growth, against 3.6% at the other end of the axis in Manual & Non-Automated Instruments (Incubators, Readers). Those are different problems, and a supplier strong in one is not thereby strong in the other; that is what sustains a field this size in a USD 4.65 billion market.
Scale in reagent and consumable manufacturing lets the largest instrument makers offer a placed-analyzer, pay-per-test commercial model that locks a laboratory into their panel menu for years. This is the main advantage global suppliers hold over smaller manufacturers. Regulatory clearance experience across multiple breakpoint standards and geographies shortens the time a new panel reaches market, favoring companies with established submission pathways. Distribution and channel reach matter more in fragmented, lower-volume markets; regional and specialist suppliers there compete on responsive local service, narrower catalog depth and faster order fulfillment instead of platform breadth. Molecular and automation capability separates suppliers pursuing rapid, genotypic testing from those centered on phenotypic methods.
The regional picture sets the entry cost: 40.2% of revenue is in North America and 26% in Europe, so a credible global position requires both, while Middle East and Africa at 3.7% can be served opportunistically.

Research approach
A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.
This market was built upward from the number of antimicrobial susceptibility tests performed annually across hospital, reference and public health laboratories, multiplied by the realized price per test across disk diffusion, broth microdilution, automated and molecular formats, and by the installed base of automated AST analyzers and their attached reagent-consumption rates. Instrument placement counts and per-instrument annual test throughput anchor the automated-systems line; published price lists and distributor pricing anchor consumables. This bottom-up build is then checked against the disclosed diagnostics and microbiology revenue of the named instrument and reagent manufacturers. Where the two diverged, the correction was made to the underlying test-volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build, not by averaging the two figures together.
The four stages
The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.
What the build rests on, and what checks it
The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.
- Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
- Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
- Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
- Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
- Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
- Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form
Data sources
Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.
- Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
- Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
- Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
- Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
- Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
- Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
- Trade association output and standards-body publications
- Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Interviews target laboratory directors and chief microbiologists who set panel and platform choice, procurement and supply chain managers who negotiate instrument and reagent contracts, and regulatory affairs staff at manufacturers who track breakpoint and clearance timelines across CLSI and EUCAST jurisdictions. Distribution and channel partners are sampled to confirm list-price realization against the discounts and rebates that reference laboratories and hospital networks actually negotiate. Sampling emphasizes North America and Europe, where CLSI and EUCAST breakpoint adoption is best documented, alongside China and India, where laboratory network expansion and local manufacturing are changing the competitive base fastest. Smaller allocations cover Latin America and the Middle East and Africa, where testing infrastructure is earlier stage and less consistently reported.
Desk research draws on FDA 510(k) and CLIA clearance databases for AST instruments and reagent panels, CLSI M100 and EUCAST breakpoint tables for the testing-standard split, and national AMR surveillance program publications, including CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network and WHO's GLASS reports, for testing-volume trends. Customs and trade data under HS code 3822 cover cross-border reagent and diagnostic-kit shipments. Hospital procurement and group purchasing organization contract schedules inform realized pricing, and the named manufacturers' own annual reports and investor filings anchor company-level revenue used in the top-down check.
Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.
Forecasting
The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.
The forecast is built from projected growth in antimicrobial resistance surveillance testing volume, the pace at which hospital and reference laboratories replace manual disk diffusion and broth microdilution with automated and molecular platforms, and the price trajectory of consumables as reagent rental contracts mature. It assumes national AMR reporting mandates keep expanding and that genotypic and MALDI-TOF-based testing keeps gaining share of new instrument placements instead of leveling off. The pandemic-era diagnostic capacity expansion is normalized out of the base year so it does not overstate underlying demand growth. For the forecast to hold, testing-volume growth needs to continue near its recent trend and not accelerate sharply from a single policy shock.
Triangulation and validation
No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.
Outputs were back-tested against recorded 2020-2024 growth in laboratory testing volumes and against the historical revenue trend of the named instrument and reagent manufacturers, checking that the implied bottom-up growth rate did not diverge materially from what those companies actually reported. Segment-level shifts, including the move toward automated and molecular platforms, were reviewed against laboratory-director interview input to confirm the direction and pace matched what buyers described adopting. Sensitivities were tested on the two assumptions the forecast depends on most: the rate at which automated and molecular platforms displace manual methods, and the pace of AMR surveillance mandate expansion, to confirm the outcome does not depend on either running at its upper bound.
Confidence and limitations
Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.
Confidence is firmer in Automated & Semi-Automated AST Instruments and Reagents & Consumables, where instrument placement counts and reagent pricing are directly observable, and in North America and Europe, where CLSI and EUCAST reporting is consistent. It is thinner in Point-of-Care & Near-Patient Testing and in Genotypic / Molecular AST outside the largest markets, where adoption is still early and reporting is inconsistent across laboratories. Veterinary and Food, Water & Environmental Testing volumes are the least consistently reported of the application segments. A material change in national AMR reporting mandates, or a faster-than-expected shift away from manual phenotypic methods, would be the most likely reason to revise this estimate.
