Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

Sizing starts from the bottom up: regional unit shipment volumes for portable and fixed or whole-house air purifiers are estimated by technology tier (HEPA, activated carbon, ionic and emerging hybrid filtration), then multiplied by average realized selling prices observed in each channel and region. That build is checked against disclosed home-appliance and climate-solutions segment revenue reported by Honeywell, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Whirlpool and Carrier, along with CADR-certified product counts published in AHAM's directory. Where the unit-times-price build and the disclosed segment figures diverge, the unit volume or average price assumption is corrected rather than averaging the two figures together, since company filings rarely isolate air purifiers from broader appliance categories.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Primary interviews target category and procurement managers at appliance retailers and HVAC distributors, product managers at appliance OEMs, channel partners handling online and offline distribution, and staff at certification bodies that administer CADR and energy-efficiency labeling programs. Facility managers in healthcare, hospitality and education are also consulted, since institutional purchasing increasingly shapes demand outside the home. Geographic sampling weights the United States, China, India, Germany and the Gulf states, reflecting where unit volumes and channel structures differ most from one another and where company disclosure is thinnest, so that judgment can supplement what filings alone do not show for this specific category.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on the US EPA's indoor air quality guidance and product listings, China's GB/T air purifier CADR standard registries, and AHAM's CADR-verified product directory, which together cover certified performance claims across the three largest manufacturing and demand bases. Trade flows are cross-checked against customs data filed under HS code 8421.39 for air purification and filtration machinery, which shows cross-border shipment patterns by origin and destination country. Company-level detail comes from annual reports and regulatory filings of the publicly listed manufacturers named in the competitive set, supplemented by Energy Star's certified product database for efficiency-tier verification.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built on unit replacement cycles, filter consumable attach rates, and the pace at which indoor air quality standards tighten across commercial, healthcare and education settings, since regulation shifts institutional purchases from optional to required. Pricing is assumed to bifurcate further, with entry-level portable units continuing to commoditize while HEPA and hybrid technologies sustain premium pricing on verified performance claims. The unusually high 2020 demand spike tied to pandemic-driven home purchasing is treated as a one-time event and normalized out of the underlying growth trend rather than extrapolated forward, so the forecast holds only if institutional air quality requirements keep tightening roughly as currently proposed.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded 2020-2024 shipment and revenue growth for the named manufacturers to confirm the historical build tracks what actually happened before it is extended into a forecast. Segment share shifts, particularly HEPA's continued share gain and ionic filtration's decline, are reviewed against category experts familiar with retail assortment changes. Sensitivities are tested on the filter-replacement cycle assumption and on average selling price trend, since both variables move the revenue build more than any single regional assumption. A scenario band is then built around the base case to show how much the forecast moves if either assumption runs faster or slower than assumed.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is strongest for HEPA and portable-format sizing in North America and Europe, where certified product counts and public company disclosure are deepest. It is weaker for ionic and emerging hybrid technologies, for the Middle East, Africa and Latin America country splits, and for the commercial-application breakdown, where reporting is thinner and shares rely more on channel-partner judgment than on disclosed figures. The main structural risk is a sustained swing in raw material or electronic component costs that changes average selling prices enough to shift the balance between unit growth and revenue growth, which would force a revision to the underlying price assumption.
