Methodology

How the estimates were built: data sources, modelling approach and validation steps.

Research approach

A market size is a claim about the world, and a claim is only as good as the route to it. Every study is built upward from units and prices — what is actually produced, sold or performed, at what it actually changes hands for — rather than from a headline figure divided downwards. Disclosed company revenue is then used to check that build, not to produce it.

Market size estimation, this report

The estimate is built upward from installed HVAC, cleanroom and industrial ventilation equipment counts by region, combined with typical prefilter change-out intervals and the realized price per unit across panel, pocket, pad, roll and mat formats. Replacement volume comes from equipment stock, not shipment counts, since prefilters are a recurring consumable, not a one-time purchase. That bottom-up figure is then checked against disclosed revenue from filtration-focused manufacturers including MANN+HUMMEL, Camfil and Donaldson Company, apportioned to the prefilter segment of their reported filtration sales. Where the two disagree, the correction is made to the underlying volume or price assumption feeding the bottom-up build; the disclosed-revenue figure is a check, not a second estimate to average in.

The four stages

The same sequence runs behind every published study, whatever the industry. The order matters as much as the steps: the segment axes are fixed before any number is collected, so the model is never reshaped to fit whatever data happens to turn up.

What the build rests on, and what checks it

The two are not interchangeable. The left column produces the number; the right column tests it. When the check disagrees with the build, the answer is to find which bottom-up assumption is wrong — a unit count, a price, a take-up rate — not to split the difference between them.

The bottom-up build rests on
  • Volume actually transacted — units produced, installed, dispensed or procedures performed, counted at the level each is genuinely recorded
  • Realised pricing by tier and channel, rather than one blended average applied across the whole market
  • Take-up and frequency: how much of the addressable base buys, and how often it repeats
The build is checked against
  • Disclosed revenue of the companies serving the market, where filings separate it far enough to be usable
  • Buyer-side spending totals — capital budgets, procurement lines, or the output of the end market the product is bought against
  • Trade and customs flows, where the product crosses borders in a separately recorded form

Data sources

Published data establishes what happened. Only the people transacting in a market can say why, and what is about to change — so the two are collected separately and weighted differently.

Primary — who is interviewed
  • Commercial and product leadership at the companies that supply the market
  • Procurement and specification leads at the organisations that buy it
  • Distributors, integrators and channel partners, where the market is served indirectly
  • Regulatory and standards specialists, where approval governs what can be sold at all
Secondary — what is read
  • Company filings, annual reports and investor disclosure
  • Government statistics, customs records and regulatory registers
  • Trade association output and standards-body publications
  • Technical and peer-reviewed literature, where the market rests on a clinical or engineering claim
Primary research design, this report

Interviews target procurement managers at HVAC contractors and facility maintenance organizations, product managers at filtration manufacturers, and regulatory or standards personnel at industry bodies setting MERV and efficiency benchmarks, since these roles set replacement specifications and purchase timing. Distributor and channel managers are also sampled to understand how OEM and direct sales differ from distributor and online replacement purchasing. Geographic sampling emphasizes North America and Europe, where filtration standards are most codified and disclosure is richest, supplemented by manufacturer and distributor contacts in China and India to capture the industrial demand driving Asia Pacific's faster growth. Sampling in Latin America and the Middle East and Africa is thinner and weighted toward regional distributors.

Secondary sources, this report

Desk research draws on customs trade data filed under HS code 8421.39 for air filtration equipment and media, national HVAC equipment shipment registers published by industry associations such as AHRI in the United States and Eurovent in Europe, and MERV and ISO 16890 efficiency rating documentation that ties filter specification to application type. Cleanroom construction and semiconductor fabrication capacity data from industry trade bodies inform the clean room application estimate specifically. Publicly filed annual reports and investor disclosures from listed filtration manufacturers provide the revenue figures used to check the bottom-up build, supplemented by trade association benchmark reports on filter replacement intervals.

Desk research runs across proprietary research databases including Factiva, OneSource and Hoovers alongside the public sources above. Modelling and statistical validation are run in SAS and SPSS.

Forecasting

The forecast is not a growth rate applied to a base year. It is built from the drivers that are expected to change, each one stated so a reader can disagree with it.

Forecast approach, this report

The forecast is built from projected growth in commercial and residential construction floor area, planned cleanroom capacity additions in semiconductor and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and the pace at which indoor air quality standards tighten toward higher MERV and ISO 16890 thresholds. Pricing is held roughly flat in real terms, since prefilter media costs are a small share of total facility operating cost and have shown limited pass-through pricing power historically. The forecast normalizes for the elevated air quality spending seen in 2021 and 2022, treating that period as a temporary peak, not a new baseline. For the forecast to hold, cleanroom capacity additions and construction activity must continue at their currently planned pace without a broad industrial slowdown.

Triangulation and validation

No figure enters a report on the strength of one source. Where the two sizing routes disagree the difference is not averaged away — the assumption causing it is isolated, tested against a third independent measure, and either corrected or carried forward as a stated limitation. Historical years are back-tested against the growth actually recorded before any forecast is allowed to run forward from them.

Validation, this report

Outputs are back-tested against recorded regional HVAC equipment shipment growth and construction floor area data for 2020 through 2024 to confirm the historical build tracks observed activity. Segment share shifts, particularly the move toward pocket filters and higher efficiency ratings, were reviewed against filtration industry association commentary on replacement trends. Sensitivities were tested around the pace of cleanroom capacity growth and the timing of tighter air quality standards, since both are policy and investment dependent rather than purely mechanical. A downside case was tested assuming construction and industrial capital spending slow to half their currently forecast rate, confirming the bear scenario stays internally consistent with the base case's underlying assumptions.

Confidence and limitations

Where an estimate is firm and where it is not is stated rather than left to be inferred from the precision of the number.

Confidence framing, this report

Confidence is firmer in North America and Europe, where HVAC equipment registers and filtration manufacturer disclosures are both available and consistent with each other. It is weaker in the Middle East and Africa and parts of Latin America, where equipment stock data is thin and much of the estimate rests on distributor interviews rather than published registers. The clean room application segment carries more uncertainty than interior space or power generation, since cleanroom capacity announcements are project specific and timing can shift. A structural risk that would force a revision is a sustained slowdown in semiconductor or pharmaceutical capital investment, which would directly reduce clean room prefilter demand.
