Market size and growth rate

The green hydrogen market stood at USD 2.6 billion in 2025 and is forecast to reach USD 28.14 billion by 2034, a CAGR of 30%. The figures come from the green hydrogen market report, which uses 2025 as its base year, 2020-2024 as the historical period and 2026-2034 as the forecast period.

The history matters because the forecast does not start from a standing position. Revenue was USD 0.62 billion in 2020 and USD 2.05 billion in 2024, before reaching USD 2.6 billion in 2025. The report records 33.2% compound growth across that stretch, ahead of the forecast period. The forecast then continues at 30%.

Two alternative paths bracket the base case. The downside reaches USD 16 billion by 2034. The upside reaches USD 33.5 billion. All three start from the same USD 2.6 billion in 2025, so the spread between them is a question about the next nine years only.

What is driving it

The clearest driver sits on the technology axis. Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOEC) compounds at 39.8% against 30% for the market. It rises from USD 0.13 billion in 2025 to USD 2.814 billion in 2034, and from 5% of revenue to 10%. Nothing else on the axis grows as fast; Other Technologies manages 26.1%.

That matters for how the headline should be read. A 30% market rate is a blend, and SOEC carries it more than any other line. A portfolio weighted away from SOEC tracks below the market even when the market is growing everywhere.

The second driver is geographic concentration of the early base. Asia Pacific generated USD 0.988 billion in 2025, which is 38% of revenue, and reaches USD 9.849 billion by 2034. Europe holds 28% at USD 0.728 billion and reaches USD 6.191 billion. Plans that weight the regions equally misstate where revenue is being added.

The third is the track record already on the books. With the trajectory demonstrated from 2020 to 2025, the open question is the mix of technologies and regions, not the direction of travel.

What could slow it

The restraint case is specific. Project delays and cancellations rise, subsidy support is cut back, and delivered green hydrogen stays well above grey hydrogen cost through the forecast. On that path the market reaches USD 16 billion in 2034 instead of USD 28.14 billion, from an unchanged USD 2.6 billion in 2025.

A second restraint is internal to the technology mix. Alkaline Electrolysis carries 55% of 2025 revenue at USD 1.43 billion, but it compounds at 26.8% against 30% for the market. Its share falls to 44% by 2034, even as its revenue rises to USD 12.382 billion. Because it holds so much of the base, its pace pulls the blended rate down more than any faster line pushes it up.

That concentration is also a challenge in its own right. A market leaning this heavily on one technology line concentrates its exposure there. A shift in demand for that line moves the total more than any other single change on the axis.

Country concentration works the same way inside Asia Pacific. Of the region's USD 0.988 billion in 2025, USD 0.55 billion comes from China alone, 55.7% of the region. China's figure rises to USD 5.4 billion by 2034. A reader who treats Asia Pacific as a diversified bloc would miss that its number carries one country's conditions inside it.

The upside case turns on three things: tighter subsidy schemes and carbon pricing, electrolyzer capital cost falling faster than planned, and more offtake projects reaching final investment decision on schedule. Together they give USD 33.5 billion in 2034 against the USD 28.14 billion base case.

Where the growth sits

By region, the report gives these shares of revenue:

  • Asia Pacific: 38%
  • Europe: 28%
  • North America: 16%
  • Middle East and Africa: 12%
  • Latin America: 6%

Asia Pacific leads with 38% of global revenue through 2034. Other energy markets show a different ordering. In the compressed air energy storage market, Asia Pacific holds 45% of revenue, North America 24% and Europe 22%. In the grid-scale energy storage market, North America holds 28% beside Asia Pacific at 38%. Green hydrogen has Europe, not North America, as its second region.

By technology, the 2025 shares are:

  • Alkaline Electrolysis: 55%
  • Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Electrolysis: 33%
  • Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOEC): 5%
  • Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) Electrolysis: 3%
  • Other Technologies: 4%

The opportunity is in the smaller lines. Share on the technology axis moves toward SOEC, from 5% in 2025 to 10% in 2034, with revenue rising from USD 0.13 billion to USD 2.814 billion. Taking position there does not require displacing whoever holds Alkaline Electrolysis, the harder and more expensive contest.

Hydrogen also appears as a storage option in adjacent markets. In the grid-scale energy storage report, hydrogen storage holds 2% of technology revenue, well behind lithium-ion batteries at 62% and pumped hydro at 22%. Readers comparing storage routes can set that against the production-side figures above.

The report segments the market beyond technology: renewable energy source, application, end-use industry, delivery mode, plant scale, storage and distribution form, plant configuration and business model. Applications run from ammonia production, methanol and chemicals, petroleum refining and iron and steel to power generation, mobility, synthetic fuels and building heat. The full segment and country detail sits in the green hydrogen market report.

For readers sizing a position in energy services rather than hydrogen production, the energy as a service market covers a different part of the sector, with a 12.24% CAGR to USD 243.76 billion by 2034.
