Chemical Recycling Market Size, Growth Rate, Drivers and Regional Outlook to 2034
Chemical recycling revenue is forecast to rise from USD 4.1 billion in 2025 to USD 14.2 billion by 2034 at a 14.37% CAGR, with Europe and Asia Pacific holding most of the base.
Chemical recycling turns plastic waste back into oil, monomers and other inputs that producers can use again. The chemical recycling market is small today and forecast to grow quickly. This analysis sets out the size of the market, the rate it grows at, what supports that rate, what could pull it down and where the revenue sits. Every figure below comes from CDI's report data for the 2026 to 2034 forecast period.
Market size and growth rate
Revenue was USD 4.1 billion in 2025. The forecast reaches USD 14.2 billion in 2034, a CAGR of 14.37%.
The history points the same way. Revenue stood at USD 1.46 billion in 2020 and USD 3.3 billion in 2024, a compound rate of 22.94% across 2020 to 2024. The forecast rate is lower than the historical one, and it is applied flat across the whole period instead of being ramped. The forecast therefore rests on a series that has risen every year, not on a projected recovery.
Two scenarios bracket the base case. The downside case reaches USD 11.3 billion by 2034. The upside case reaches USD 16 billion. Both start from the same USD 4.1 billion in 2025, and the base case of USD 14.2 billion sits between them.
For context on the feedstock side, the polypropylene market is forecast at USD 214.8 billion by 2034 with a CAGR of 4.79%. Polyolefins such as polypropylene are one of the feedstock types covered in the chemical recycling segmentation, alongside PET, polystyrene, mixed and multilayer plastics, textile waste and end-of-life tires.
What is driving it
The blended 14.37% is carried by one technology line. Enzymatic Recycling compounds at 23.07%, rising from USD 0.123 billion in 2025 to USD 0.852 billion in 2034. Its share of revenue moves from 3% to 6%. Nothing else on the technology axis grows as fast; Pyrolysis manages 11.65%.
That concentration matters for any supplier reading the forecast. A company positioned in Enzymatic Recycling grows with the market or ahead of it. A company positioned elsewhere on the axis grows below the market rate.
The regional base adds a second support. Europe generated USD 1.312 billion in 2025, 32% of revenue, and reaches USD 3.692 billion by 2034. Asia Pacific is next at 31% of revenue, with USD 1.271 billion in 2025 and USD 5.396 billion in 2034. Between them the two regions hold most of the base and most of the revenue added over the period. A plan that weights all five regions equally misstates where the growth is.
The market's own end-use coverage shows who buys the output: packaging, automotive, textiles and apparel, building and construction, electrical and electronics, consumer goods and healthcare. Demand from several industries gives the forecast more than one route to its rate.
Engineered polymers form a related demand pool. The high performance plastics market is forecast at USD 62.2 billion by 2034 with a CAGR of 8.08%, and it also reports a recycled and reprocessed material-origin segment.
What could slow it
The downside case is specific. Mandates are delayed or diluted, several large projects slip or stall, energy and sorting costs stay high, and low virgin polymer prices narrow the premium for recycled output. On those assumptions 2034 revenue lands at USD 11.3 billion against USD 14.2 billion in the base case.
Technology concentration is the second risk. Pyrolysis carries 57% of 2025 revenue, USD 2.337 billion, and compounds at 11.65% against 14.37% for the market. It still holds 46% of revenue in 2034, at USD 6.532 billion. The largest line is not the fastest, so its pace holds the blended rate down more than any faster line lifts it. Anything that changes demand for Pyrolysis output changes the headline number.
Regional concentration is the third. Germany accounts for USD 0.36 billion of Europe's USD 1.312 billion in 2025, which is 27.4% of the leading region, and USD 0.88 billion by 2034. Read as a region, Europe looks diversified. Read by weight, it depends on one country, and the regional forecast inherits whatever happens in that market.
The upside case is the mirror image. Recycled-content mandates tighten and are enforced on schedule, large plants reach nameplate output quickly, and brand owners sign long-term offtake contracts that support a lasting premium for certified output. On those assumptions the market reaches USD 16 billion by 2034.
Where the growth sits
By region, Europe leads with 32% of global revenue. Asia Pacific holds 31% and North America 27%. Middle East and Africa holds 6% and Latin America 4%. Europe's lead is narrow, and Asia Pacific's USD 5.396 billion in 2034 is the larger of the two end-point figures.
By technology, the 2025 shares are:
- Pyrolysis, 57%
- Depolymerization (Solvolysis), 15%
- Gasification, 11%
- Solvent-Based Purification, 10%
- Hydrothermal Processing, 4%
- Enzymatic Recycling, 3%
Pyrolysis is the largest line and Enzymatic Recycling the fastest. The opportunity sits on the technology axis more than the regional one. Share moves toward Enzymatic Recycling, from 3% in 2025 to 6% in 2034, on 23.07% growth. Taking a position there does not require displacing whoever holds Pyrolysis, which is the harder and more expensive contest.
The report segments the market along ten axes in total: technology, feedstock type, product output, end-use industry, application of output, plant scale, business model, waste source, certification scheme and site integration. The certification axis covers ISCC PLUS, REDcert2, other mass-balance schemes and uncertified output. The site integration axis separates standalone plants from those co-located with a refinery or cracker, or with a sorting or waste facility. Readers sizing a specific plant type or product can find the full breakdown in the chemical recycling market report.
