Essentially, the tea bag functions as a streamlined tea infuser. They usually have a small label with brewing instructions and a string for easy removal. Most are made from biodegradable materials like paper fibers.

The bag works the same as the tea infuser, it holds the tea while it is brewing, making it easier to discard the tea. Modern tea bags are often made of paper fibers, unlike the original tea bags which were hand-stitched from silk muslin. The idea behind tea bags is based on the idea that after a specific brewing time, the tea should be removed from the hot water so that the tea can taste its best. Another plus is convenience; thanks to the detachable unit, there's no need for a tea strainer, making tea in a mug is as fast as making tea in a kettle, and cleaning the teapot is much simpler.
