An electrical transmission tower is a device that supports transmission conductors, that is, overhead transmission lines between power plants and local termination substations. Transmission towers play an important role in transmitting power through overhead lines by structurally supporting high-voltage, heavy conductors. To transmit maximum power (over 110 kV) over overhead lines, towers are typically between 15 m and 55 m tall to withstand tension.
For heavy power transmission, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology is commonly used for long-distance transmission to reduce power loss and limit voltage drop. This DC conductor delivers a uniform voltage across its cross-sectional area. At maximum efficiency, the voltage at the sending end should equal the voltage at the receiving end with no voltage drop.
